There are about two dozen errors in this text ranging from grammatical to logistical, but the biggest error was thinking this would help on the test. It desperately needs to be revised to include some more 20th c. poetry (including Bishop, Creeley, and way more Harlem Renissance), and there wasn't a single line of "Walk Whitman" on the test (see the last page of this book). The most useful information from this text was the refresher on certain poetic structures, and the warnings about Shakespeare and Chaucer which were pretty predictable.

This book is pretty good if you want to study for the GRE Literature in English Subject test. The most helpful part of this book is that it gives 'A', 'B' and 'C' lists of material that is likely to show up on the exam. It also summarizes some of the more important works. The book basically acts as a study guide as well as a strategy guide for the test. Not only does it talk about the works and authors one should know, it also gives tips on how to answer questions on the test that one doesn't know.Along with this book, you MUST get certain books in the Norton Anthology series (Middle Ages, Romantic Age, Victorian Age and Modern Age). Even the book recommends that you do this.Other helpful books for the GRE Literature in English Subject test include Longman Guide to Shakespeare's Characters: A Who's Who of Shakespeare,Literature: A Portable Anthology and Literature: A Pocket Anthology (4th Edition)

This book will NOT tell you everything you need to know (if you are preparing for a literature exam, you obviously have to read literature, and not just a study guide), but it WILL do a very thorough job helping you understand what you need to study. I took this exam this weekend, and, while I have not seen my scores yet, I can testify that the material on the exam corresponded very well to the material emphasized in this book and its practice test -- and also that I felt very confident, relaxed, and well-rehearsed during the test itself (which is unusual for me, as I normally freak out during standardized tests). I am giving it four stars instead of five, because the only indication it gave as to how well I would need to know the Harlem Renaissance writers appeared in the practice test answers and not in the main text of the book, but, otherwise, A+, Princeton.

I took this test today, after having studied from this book (and outside the book) for several months. The material on the test corresponded well with the test material. However, note that ETS' scoring policy has changed to remove the guessing penalty. The book did not reflect that change.

This book is indisputably the MOST IMPORTANT BOOK you will read if you are planning on taking this test. I read and re-read, worked and re-worked this book religiously. Obviously, they change the test each time it is taken, but I can say in all honestly that at least half of what the writers of this book said would most likely be on this test WAS on this test.When I took it, I thought to myself "Thank goodness I read that book, or I would be on the brink of a panic attack." Do yourself a favor if you're taking this test: buy this book. Read this book before you embark on any list of things you should or shouldn't read for this test. Do absolutely everything the book says. THEN, and only then, plug your knowledge with the works it highlights as being important (for me, this was most having to review Shakespeare, because they are not kidding when they tell you in this book that Shakespeare will be all over this test). I would have paid double for this book--it is absolutely worth the advice it gives and the piece of mind you will have when you walk into that test, confident that you have thoroughly reviewed everything to the best of your ability.

Despite the flaws always inherent in test review books, this one is definitely the most bang for your buck. With overviews of Greek and Roman literature, reading lists, and literary term and theory reviews, this definitely provides a concise overview of your studying for this hellish test. The snark throughout the book made it less of a slog to read as well. I am currently using this as a basis for my studying, as there is much more than is in the book, but it serves as a great starting point.Product also was received on time and in excellent condition.

This book isn't perfect, but I found it quite useful. It helped me focus my studies, instead of just trying to reread every piece of literature ever written. It also helped me prepare psychologically by showing me what the test looks like and helping me pace myself. After I took the practice test, I felt much calmer going in to take the actual exam.

This book gets you prepped for the basics of the test and more importantly points you to the major works that you should revisit and schools of critical theory that will be focused on in the test. Do not expect to simply read this book and be ready, you have a lot of work ahead of you when studying for this monster.

Don't expect a straight narrative from this tale of Chicago between 1800 and 1900. Carr has used a variety of voices and sources to pull together what is more a series of vignettes than a conventional novel. This makes for some confusion early on but is ultimately rewarding because it reflects the patchwork nature of a great city. Jean Baptiste Pointe de Sable and his descendants figure prominently, as is appropriate. You might find one voice more compelling than another but don't count on it necessarily reappearing. I found this fascinating but understand why others might find it frustrating. Thanks to net galley for the ARC. I knew virtually nothing about Chicago before this book and found it very informative.

Carr’s entertaining and uniquely written novel relates the “history” of Chicago’s first hundred years. Using many plot devices to unfold the story to readers, the novels storyline comes to us through excerpts from an “alternative” history manuscript, journal entries, letters, and newspaper articles among other devices. There is an eclectic mix of characters and their descendants, both historic and fictional, some who travel through the narrative, while others appearing only briefly.This sweeping portrayal of Chicago at its best and worst, its highs and lows, is exceptional. From prairie town to booming metropolis, Chicago and its residents come alive with the details and descriptions in Carr’s prose. He makes us feel the struggle and abject poverty of the immigrants as well as the greed and opulence of monied class.This is a sweeping and compelling novel of what is takes to make a city. Make Me a City by Jonathan Carr is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in early March.A semi-fictionalized chronology of Chicago, starting in 1800, in the style of an academic journal in a second-person format, recalling possible conversations and written correspondence around historic events. The quality of writing is adequate, even good, but the story is hard to grasp, like a based-on-a-true-story historic saga that you start watching when it’s already a quarter of the way through.

Make Me a City is a lot of book to read. It is indeed slow going and just frustrating at times. I usually like this type of sweeping saga story, but I got stuck with this one. Maybe too many facts and not enough story to carry it along. Chicago's development through the 19th century is an epic journey, but this book just doesn't quite capture the grandeur of that. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

This book is difficult to read. Previous reviews are all from some "get to read the book before it's published, but please leave a review" operation.This is neither a serious historical fiction, nor an entertaining read. Avoid.

Although the book is historical fiction, it read more like a history book than a novel. I was hoping for more of a storyline to run through the book rather than the relatively dry recitation of facts presented through disjointed episodes. The book was definitely more informative than interesting.

I’ve only been to Chicago a handful of times but I absolutely love the city and was so looking forward to learning the history. But this book did not live up to my expectations. Each chapter covers a specific timeframe of a year or more starting in the 1800’s and it moves between different events, happenings, and following several different people. I didn’t care for the flow of the story, when I would just got interested in one chapter, the next one would be on a completely different subject.All was not completely lost though, I did learn many facts that I did not know before, such as the raising of the city, the sewage problem and the building of the canal, but I felt like the story was shallow on human interest and could have been told in a more fluent manner.My biggest con on the entire book was the flow. I would not consider this an actual novel, it is a medley of historic facts from eyewitnesses, hearsay, newspaper articles and letters. Not what I was expecting. If you are a history buff, it may appeal to you.I was given an advanced copy from Henry Holt and Company through Net Galley for my honest review, this one gets 3***’s.

I've been coding Java servlets and JSPs since 2000. I've had this book since shortly after it was published and it's a frequent go-to resource. It covers pretty much everything you need to know. It may not always have exhaustive detail, but if there's a topic I've grown hazy on (I work on more than just servlets/JSPs) this book has a succinct, relevant passage to remind me.The only downsides are that this thing is the size of a Manhattan phone book (you have to be of a certain age to grasp what I mean) and it's not available on the Kindle. I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it were.

This book takes you through a well structured learning journey of JSP, Servlets and related technologies such as Netbeans, Tomcat and MySQL for developing complete web apps. The book has provided me with the skill and confidence to start building my own web-app. The book finishes with a completed e-commerce example that builds on the earlier work, and gives the reader a basis for their own future development.The book provides comprehensive details on how to set up the environment for developing and deploying web-apps, with the installation of Netbeans, MySQL, libraries etc covered in the appendices. The set up is generally a difficult part of learning a new computer concept and this book explains this very well.The material, the downloaded code, and exercises are well integrated and provide for a comprehensive learning experience. I was able to successfully complete the vast majority of exercises readily.I have ordered the Murach Java book as I found the JSP and Servlets book very useful.COMPARED TO HEAD FIRST***********************I am a big fan of the Head First series, a series which has taught me everything I know about Java, XHTML, CSS, Design Patterns Ajax, OO Design etc. I love it. But as a novice, I found Head First Servlets and JSP: Passing the Sun Certified Web Component Developer Exam (SCWCD) difficult to get into. Mainly because the HF book is directed towards accreditation, and contains some curved balls to prepare for the exam that distracted me from learning.Instead, I did the Murach book from cover to cover, and skim read the HF book (partially because I am in love with that bossy HF girl!). The HF series is more fun and engaging, but for JSP and Servlets I found the Murach approach worked best for me. While the Murach book is as as well written and presented as can be expected of a more traditional text book, it is not as interactive as the HF series. I therefore found completing the exercises in the Murach book important for engaging with the content.Murach does a better job than HF on the MySQL and IDE side of things. HF probably covers the nuances of the Servlets more comprehensively.I recommend both, depending on what you need.

I used this book for my university course and I admit that it was extremely useful. Nothing is unclear and everything is explained in fine detail. All probable questions that may rise up in a student's mind are actually well anticipated and that makes a big difference in making that learning curve as short as possible.With the knowledge provided, this book will teach you how to make a fully working online e-commerce web application. Although aesthetics may not be its strong point, it is not all that hard complementing the book with a bit of online research to see how CSS (which is not covered) works and how to add a button or two in order to give it more professional looking graphical user interface. The real deal is actually "under the covers" in which servlets, database management, etc are alla layed out in a way that have a logic for what you're trying to achieve (online store). Sadly, when it comes to making an ebay-style web app, this book simply doesn't go that far. Thus I needed to search the web and many occassions to include what I thought was necessary. Maybe that could be the basis for a new Murach's book? In all, great book!

Murach's is the best book on the market today if you want to learn strictly how to program JSPs and Servlets. He covers various aspects of JSP and Servlet develop along with a crash course in HTML. I have gone through 18 chapters of the book thus far and have learned a great deal about Java web development. Every code example I have run just works (given you set them up and use them in a Netbeans and Tomcat environment). If you are interested in learning about how to code JSPs and Servlets this book is for you. This book does not get into a lot of peripheral info (no frameworks, no EJB, and only what you need to know to get Tomcat up and running as well as setting up mySQL). This book does not bog you down with a lot of extra info only what's needed to learn the basics (and then some) of Java web development. I would strongly advise any new JEE Developer or someone looking to brush up to purchase this book. The code examples you download from the site are great and each one can run independent of other chapters. There are a few chapters where you will need to set up mySQL database connection, but that is as complex as it gets (and even with that step the book walks you through the entire process). Looking forward to other JEE books from Murach.
