If you are interested in France and pictures of crumbling plaster, gardens, cemeteries, and old buildings, then you will enjoy this book. If you are interested in close-up and long shot pictures of cats in their natural environment, then you will enjoy this book. If you are interested in both France and cats then you will love this book. Large and small photographs of French villages, with and without cats, fill this book. Cats, doing their thing, poetry, remarks from the photographer and information about some of the lovely photographed cats themselves, also fill this book. There is even a two page copy of PUSS IN BOOTS, by Charles Perrault, included in this beautiful book. Rachael Hale has taken her camera out of the studio and into the world of French Village cats and I am happy that she did.

This book just makes me happy. It captures some of my favorite subjects (Provence and cats) in the most beautiful way. From the layout, the paper quality, to the printing, the details of this book are incredible and nothing was overlooked. There's a large image of a misty landscape which alone was printed on a matte surface because a glossier paper would have been distracting and would not have correctly captured the soft light-filled mist in the photo. I took notice of all the little details that were carefully thought out, and I was so impressed!

This is a lovely book! Rachael Hale McKenna is a wonderful photographer and this is a book you can look at over and over again, noticing something new each time. If you love cats and all things French, then this is a good book for you, and would also make a nice gift for the cat lovers you know. I found out about this book because a friend sent the The French Dog first. Both well worth purchasing! Cheers to Ms. McKenna!

What a beautiful book. It makes a perfect present for a Francophile or a cat-lover (or ideally a cat loving Francophile). It probably especially makes a perfect present if you give it away instead of keeping it for yourself (sorry not sorry). It’s a coffee table book, so it’s not a riveting read, but so lovely to look at, with such a charming premise and perception, it makes a cozy half an hour whenever I look through it.

What a lovely book, ah to be a cat in Paris. I decided to buy this book for a friend for Christmas and realized that I should have one as well. It is beautifully done with wonderful quotes about cats. My friend said that she and all of her sisters enjoyed seeing this wonderful book. Enjoy!

This is my second time to purchase this book as a gift for a cat lover. Both of my friends loved it so much. I love all the stories behind the photos. I have several of this photographers books, and they are all nice, but this one def has the most words, which was a nice surprise.

The year is 1959 and the place is the Belgian Congo. Nathan, a Baptist preacher, has come to spread the Word in a remote village reachable only by airplane. To say that he and his family are woefully unprepared would be an understatement: "We came from Bethlehem, Georgia, bearing Betty Crocker cake mixes into the jungle," says Leah, one of Nathan's daughters. But of course it isn't long before they discover that the tremendous humidity has rendered the mixes unusable, their clothes are unsuitable, and they've arrived in the middle of political upheaval as the Congolese seek to wrest independence from Belgium. In addition to poisonous snakes, dangerous animals, and the hostility of the villagers to Nathan's fiery take-no-prisoners brand of Christianity, there are also rebels in the jungle and the threat of war in the air. Could things get any worse? In fact they can and they do. The first part of The Poisonwood Bible revolves around Nathan's intransigent, bullying personality and his effect on both his family and the village they have come to. As political instability grows in the Congo, so does the local witch doctor's animus toward the Prices, and both seem to converge with tragic consequences about halfway through the novel. From that point on, the family is dispersed and the novel follows each member's fortune across a span of more than 30 years. The Poisonwood Bible is arguably Barbara Kingsolver's most ambitious work, and it reveals both her great strengths and her weaknesses. As Nathan Price's wife and daughters tell their stories in alternating chapters, Kingsolver does a good job of differentiating the voices. But at times they can grate--teenage Rachel's tendency towards precious malapropisms is particularly annoying (students practice their "French congregations"; Nathan's refusal to take his family home is a "tapestry of justice"). More problematic is Kingsolver's tendency to wear her politics on her sleeve; this is particularly evident in the second half of the novel, in which she uses her characters as mouthpieces to explicate the complicated and tragic history of the Belgian Congo. Despite these weaknesses, Kingsolver's fully realized, three-dimensional characters make The Poisonwood Bible compelling, especially in the first half, when Nathan Price is still at the center of the action. In this risky but resoundingly successful novel, Kingsolver leaves the Southwest, the setting of most of her work (The Bean Trees; Animal Dreams) and follows an evangelical Baptist minister's family to the Congo in the late 1950s, entwining their fate with that of the country during three turbulent decades. Nathan Price's determination to convert the natives of the Congo to Christianity is, we gradually discover, both foolhardy and dangerous, unsanctioned by the church administration and doomed from the start by Nathan's self-righteousness. Fanatic and sanctimonious, Nathan is a domestic monster, too, a physically and emotionally abusive, misogynistic husband and father. He refuses to understand how his obsession with river baptism affronts the traditions of the villagers of Kalinga, and his stubborn concept of religious rectitude brings misery and destruction to all. Cleverly, Kingsolver never brings us inside Nathan's head but instead unfolds the tragic story of the Price family through the alternating points of view of Orleanna Price and her four daughters. Cast with her young children into primitive conditions but trained to be obedient to her husband, Orleanna is powerless to mitigate their situation. Meanwhile, each of the four Price daughters reveals herself through first-person narration, and their rich and clearly differentiated self-portraits are small triumphs. In the end, Kingsolver delivers a compelling family saga, a sobering picture of the horrors of fanatic fundamentalism and an insightful view of an exploited country crushed by the heel of colonialism and then ruthlessly manipulated by a bastion of democracy. So many people are judging this book based on their personal feelings about a certain subject, mostly Christianity or America. But I'm giving my review based on the story and writing. Both were excellent. It was a great story and it made you question everything you've ever thought or believed. Did BK have an agenda, of course. It was obvious. But it didn't sway my opinion of the writing or the story. There are two reasons I'm not giving this a 5 star. 1 - she contradicts her agenda more than once. At times Africa is nothing but innocent, then she goes on to tell stories of how they kill and maim, and are just as human as everyone else on the planet. 2 - I feel, and quite frankly this is a first for me, that she took the story too far. Reading on a kindle, I don't know how many pages a book is. And I love that. Some books will seem daunting based solely on their size, It can discourage a lot of people from reading it. (Example, Cutting for Stone - for me 5 stars and still my favorite book to date) But I digress. I still felt she could have wrapped up this story after they left the village but before we got fully engulfed into their adult lives - that portion just didn't capture me as a reader. All said, it was an excellent read and I will recommend it as one of my favorites.

I teach this novel in a course for college juniors and seniors. I’ve just finished reading it for the fifth time. It remains one of my favorite contemporary novels, a brilliant, evocative, beautifully written tour-de-force. It is novel about experience, growth, the resiliency of women, the harshness of a world with little justice, and the inevitability of change. Set in the Congo of the the 1960s-1980s, it recounts the terrible history of imperialism, universal quest for freedom, and strength of tradition and spiritual bonds. The ultimate religion, Kingsolver believes, is the embrace of nature, and acceptance that we, too, are part of a living, biological world, past and present, whose muntu (being) we share.My students love this novel. I look forward each time spring semester to rereading a wonderful book and introducing 20 or so undergraduates to Kingsolver’s work. Five stars (one for each of the five Price women).

I am very skeptical of books written about Africa by non Africans. I believe that our own people should be the voice of the continent. This is not the case with this book. It is an humorous, tragic, heart-rending, intricately woven tale. Kingsolver is phenomenally talented and her gift shines through the Poisonwood Bible. Several years after a good friend first lent it to me, it is still my most revered and recommended novel. This volume was a gift to my mother in law and I even liked the revised cover.

This is a beautifully written book with inspired prose and deep insights. It looks at Africa and Africans with open eyes and a sensitivity to their heritage and culture. It also examines the role of missionaries in Africa, some of whom are good and some terrible. It is not a book for the deeply religious who cannot stand to see their own beliefs challenged or to acknowledge that there are other belief systems out there that are held just as dearly by their followers.I would like to site some of my favorite passages.I could never work out whether we were to view religion as a life-insurance policy or a life sentence.Mama says their skin bears scars different from ours because their skin is a map of all the sorrows in their lives.I pictured hands like those digging diamonds out of the Congo dirt and go to thinking, Gee, does Marilyn Monroe even know where they come from? Just picturing her in thr stain gown and a COngolese diamond digger int he same universe gave me the weebie jeebies. So I didn't think about it anymore.God doesn't need to punish us. He just grants us a long enough life to punish ourselves.Illusions mistaken for truth are the pavement under our feet.There are a lot of other passages and verbal images that I loved but I can't copy the whole book here. However, there is one last thing I want to say and this is a complaint.Here is the quote:A parasite of humans that extinguished us altogether, you see, would quickly be laid to rest in human graves, So the race between predator and prey remains exquisitely neck and neck.As always, it is impossible for people to understand evolution. This passage was supposed to have been said by a researcher at the CDC. It fails to understand that evolution is not forward looking. It is highly likely that this scenario has played out over the millennium for species that no longer exist. In fact, the Tasmanian devil is currently facing extinction from a viral form of cancer that fits this description. This kind of thing is more likely in small populations where genetic diversity is limited. Probably the human race has little to fear on this account.

This book started slow for me, but it soon began to capture my attention. The characters are well developed and very complex. The story is engrossing...the struggles of a white mission family in the Belgian Congo in the 1950's. It is told alternately by the wife and daughters of an pious but abusive husband and father. It follows the characters over several years and describes the impact that time in the Congo had on their lives as some return to the US and others remain in Africa through the rebellion and beyond.

This came to me as one of the "got to read this book some time in your life" and I agree. Poignant, incredibly perceptive with its occasional glimpses into African, world and religious politics of the day (gave me a different view of colonial Africa I can tell you!), beautiful writing and very real characters that just carried me along. Emotionally engrossing - I wanted to slap him and carry them all away....

Clearly author David Quammen has done considerable research for this book and he intends to share all the details with you. If you are interested in a book that tells you he met scientist Mike Gray at a Turkish restaurant, the details of Ernst Haeckel's marriage and so on, then this book is for you. These stories do bring out the humanity of the individuals involved. However, I was expecting a book with this title to be much more about the new views on life and evolution that have come up over the last few decades, particularly around horizontal gene transfer (HGT) and the implications for human evolution.To be fair, he does cover quite a bit of the science and his explanations are usually very clear, although this almost seems a secondary aspect of the book. It is also easy to miss some of this as one starts to skim through story after story of what a particular scientist looked like in a photograph the author had seen. Further, just as the ideas get interesting, we suddenly jump back in time, often several centuries, to pick up another theme.I think there are at least three separate things going on in this book. Each could make an interesting book but combined together make a frustrating tangle.1. A biography of Carl Woese, "the most important little- known biologist of the twentieth century", who among other things identified archaea as a third kingdom of life (in addition to bacteria and eukaryotes.) Woese, a complex and ultimately bitter man, is the main focus of the book and we return time and time to him, ending the book with his death2. The development, and recent abandonment by many,of ideas around a tree of life. However, his exposition of this is rather inchoate but does draw in many scientists and discoveries over the centuries that influenced the flow of thoughts about the origins and evolution of life. Jumping backwards and forwards in time, we meet a large number of individual scientists and each one needs some anecdotes about their life, from pedophilia to skills on the trapeze. He does highlight well the amount of serendipity, risk and mind-numbing detail that goes into actual scientific advances.3. The science itself. As I have already said, when he sticks to this, Quammen does a good job of explaining some very complex ideas but I was expecting a great deal more information on the science and its implications. For example, towards the end of the book he reports on recent research by a Dutch scientist, Thijs Ettema, that suggests eukaryotes, which include humans, evolved from archaea and were not a third limb of the tree. Although controversial, I would have liked a lot more information on this and other ideas he identifies.If the author's purpose was to show that scientific discovery and advancement is as tangled as life itself then he succeeds in that but at the expense of clarity. Given the obvious knowledge and writing skills of the author this is a missed opportunity to open up this area of science to a wider audience.

Some will criticize this book because of its subtitle makes a bold claim: “A radical new history of life.” A reviewer in the Wall Street Journal, for example, was a little grumpy and took pains to reiterate that Darwin’s theory of natural selection safely remains the central pillar of biology, thank you very much.Well, OK… but saying “evolution by natural selection” is sort of like saying “Super Bowl via playoffs.” It may outline the process of competition and elimination, but it doesn’t tell you *anything* about the strategy that got the team to the Super Bowl! It only diverts your attention away from all the interesting details.What is just now coming to the surface, arguably 20 years late, is the immensely sophisticated systems that drive evolutionary change, as discovered by people like Carl Woese, Lynn Margulis and Barbara McClintock.The story focuses on the late Carl Woese, in fact it’s very nearly a full biography of the man. So… why should anyone care about Carl Woese? And why should anyone even give consideration to the suggestion that he was as great a scientist as Darwin?The answer is that Woese flipped Darwin’s tree of life 90 degrees in 1977. Any time someone introduces that large of a conceptual revolution to a field, that person is a titan. Woese showed that inheritance is a vast interconnected web and that Darwin’s cherished tree metaphor has not minor, but major failings.Woese showed that Horizontal Gene Transfer - large sections of DNA being transferred wholesale, from viruses and bacteria to other bacteria and plants and animals - is a *major* component of evolution, and in fact the history of life cannot be properly understood at all without it.This is as big of a deal to biology as quantum mechanics was to Newtonian physics. It transforms the speed of evolution, from millions of years to, in some cases, hours and minutes.It shows that organisms find very clever ways to incorporate very large chunks of code, obtained from elsewhere, into their physiology. Who knew that a large stretch of code stolen from a retrovirus was used to build the human placenta?It changes genetics. It changes disease treatment. It changes genetic engineering and informs our use of gene editing technologies like CRISPR. It changes the whole history of evolution and alters the very definition of inheritance. It even raises deep questions about how purposeful and directional evolutionary systems actually are.At the end of the book, Quammen even points out that three fundamental concepts in biology have gone from sharp to blurry:-The definition of "species." Inheritance itself is not something that comes only from traditional ancestors, it comes from a whole mosaic of sources.-There is no precise definition of gene; every man, woman and child supposedly knows what genes are, of course, but when you get right down to it, it’s a very squishy term.-There’s not even a precise definition of an individual! Cell for cell, 90% of a human being is symbiotic bacteria. Every sophisticated organism on earth is a mosaic of cells within cells, organisms within organisms. Chloroplasts and mitochondria are symbiotic cells living inside of our own cells. They have their own DNA and Carl Woese was instrumental in proving that.Quammen takes us on a historical tour of the fascinating scientists who quietly turned evolutionary theory sideways and upside down. Carl Woese was resentful of Darwin and thought himself to be a superior scientist. Quammen himself doesn’t go that far… but there’s a strong case to be made that Woese, Margulis, McClintock and a man named Fred Doolittle contributed vastly more to our understanding of the *detailed strategy* of evolution than Darwin ever did or even could have.This conceptual revolution has already been well known inside of biology for years, but the public is only beginning to hear about it. As a mosaic hobbyist I have purchased a number of books on mosaicing and find this to be one of the best. The instructions are clear and the techniques suggested quite professional. Many books use funky unprofessional techniques and materials--this one does not. I love the designs and while I would probably never copy them exactly I will use some of them as jumping off points for my own projects.

I love that this book describes all of the material needed and shows photos of all the steps. I can't wait to start a project. I have been wanting to add some unique stepping stones to my garden for awhile now.

I like the different designs. It inspired me to create more outdoor mosaic projects. I also liked the size of the book.
