This book has the whole background, good and bad, on the comic book industry, censors, artists.How the whole mix came together to accurately reflect America from the '70s on.Better, and more educational, than the sanitized version we got in school.

I ordered this book because I am working on research Japanese pornographic comics and I thought it would be a nice gift to myself to learn a little bit about Western erotic comics. The book is large, well-printed, and it would make an excellent coffee table book, if you are the sort of person (like me) known to all your friends to be a fan of porn and comics.But, having read the sections on the Japanese side, I'm not sure if I can trust the info on the European/American side!Maybe that's not fair. The issue with the Japanese section is not quite the information: a lot of the copy is okay, simplified and exoticized, but that's what I would expect. Some of it is wrong or silly, but I'm sure if I made a list of specific complaints, I would be accused of academic quibbling.The bigger problem is, hilariously, the pictures! First of all, the lolicon page doesn't show any examples of lolicon, which is not surprising given the sensitivity of the material and the difficulty it poses to publishers, but putting artists like Mizuno Junko on a page explicating lolicon seems disingenuous and confusing -- she's a ladies' mangaka or a cute-horror artist, not in lolicon at all AFAIK. Even the Yui Toshiki and Kondom examples aren't lolicon, though they're at least primarily pornographic artists; I'd put them in a section on monster/animal or general weird body erotic manga. Still, it makes sense that the publisher would hesitate to publish lolicon, even in non-erotic examples.More surprising, however, are the pages on shounen ai and yaoi: there's one image of a cover of June, an appropriate example, but all the other images are of gay manga, a separate and very distinct genre! Gay manga are comics about gay men written by/for gay men and generally emphasize size and masculinity; shounen ai and yaoi (really, BL) are about gay men but written for women and usually feature feminized men or boys. If you've ever seen Kaze to Ki no Uta, an example of 70s shounen ai mentioned in the description, you would be shocked to see it illustrated with images by Tadame Gengoro, a prominent gay manga artist: the characters in Kaze are young beautiful boys and the sexuality is more suggestive than explicit, while the illustrations by Tadame here show hairy, muscular men engaged in explicit penetration. Gay manga is a very interesting and underpublicized genre (in the West and in Japan!), so it would have been great to see a section on it in this book, but using it to illustrate shounen ai is strange and shows that Pilcher wasn't really interested in researching shounen ai/yaoi/BL enough to find good and interesting examples of erotic art within the genre(s).Anyway, I'm still looking forward to the rest of the book, but I just wanted to warn everyone else not to rely on the info or the images too much. I know it's not an academic text, so I was ready to laugh off simplifications/mishaps in the writing, but the image mistakes are just silly and unfortunate.

Interesting overview of this matter, although I expected more a critical analysis on the history of erotic comics. I'm very happy I met Giovanna Casotto in this book. She's amazing: she's a woman herself, she masters her drawing skills and she's not vulgar, but very ... erotic.

I think every Nursing student should read this book. It has all the information need to pass the NCLEX exam. I really like this book because it has 105 questions with a complete explanation of the answer. It also has provide with strategies and guidelines that you can apply in order to make an educated guess. I like how the answers were explained. Easy to understand. A great insight, and well worth the few minutes it'll take to read it. Excellent tool to prepare for the NCLEX.The questions and answers have been discussed with explanation for the right answer to clear things out. A good exam guide indeed for nursing students! Recommended!

Reviewing for NCLEX is not that easy. This book will guide us to make the review more easier. This is basically about Perioperative Nursing Care. It is nice to have this book because the questions are provided with the best answer. The 105 practice questions and rationales are all so helpful. The medical terms are actually hard to memorize, but since it is made like a question and answer way, then it is more comprehensible. I find reviewer so significant especially if one is planning to take this kind of exam. More easier reviewer, more efficient and convenient to have.

Now this is a second hand review. I'm not into this profession, but Chase asked me to review this study guide. After reading these hieroglyphics, I had to consult one of my RN friends. She read it over, and began to reminisce. She said she wished she had this study guide when she qualified. I learned a very long time ago, if you don't know about the subject, find an expert in the field. I give this guide a 5 star because my RN friend said this was a very legitimate manual.

With more than 100 questions that will help you study for the NCLEX I couldn’t find a better study guide to help me. The most helpful thing about the book is that it provides the answers to these questions so that you can try quizzing yourself to see how you are doing and test your information. I loved this book.

Lucky for me I found this book on promo for free. I am looking for NCLEX book that I can use for my review as I plan to take the exam. This book didn't disappoint me, I learned a lot. Especially it gives the rationale for every correct answers, this help me to understand more the situation.

I gifted this book to my nursing school friend and she was able to pass the NCLEX because of it! Of course, she studied a lot prior but this book really was the cherry on top. I like that it provides answers to all the questions as it allows you to check to see how you're doing. I highly recommend for striving nurses!

This may be the best book I have read in years. Maybe a decade. I was a year and a half into a very stressful job with a bully boss when I found this book -- I'd heard about it for years but thought the title sounded girlie and wimpy so I hesitated to read it. I don't like gooey, emotional, sappy stuff. Well guess what... no sap here. Or at least so little sap that a person who doesn't like sappy didn't really notice. Instead I found a smart, astute, science-based book which explained to me why I was slowly dying at my job, why I could not sleep at night, and why I was so stressed at work that I literally could not stomach my sandwich at lunch but would almost throw it up every day (but I could eat at home) -- I was operating at a level of physical stress which was impossible for a highly sensitive person to sustain, and yet I was somehow sustaining it. (I am very stubborn.) Once I actually looked at myself, looked at my actual situation, stopped blaming myself for being "weak" and "broken" and "not tough enough" and stopped trying to be what I am not, I saw clearly that I was ignoring my physical body's symptoms of extreme stress and hurting myself bad. Reading this was a wake up call at a time in my life when I really needed it, and gave me enough confidence to finally stand up to my impossible to please, bullying, manipulative boss and just quit. I am going back to school and retraining to become a software developer so that I can work in an environment that won't kill me. Not everyone is the same; everyone has different physical tolerances. If you find yourself "too sensitive" etc, give yourself a break. You are not a clone of the extrovert next to you. Pay attention to your body and read this book. IF YOU ARE AN EXTROVERT, PLEASE READ THIS BOOK. If you are NOT highly sensitive, please read this book!!! I wish to God every human being would read this book so people could finally start understanding each other, and society in general would stop hurting those among them who are not built with the same nervous system that the 80% majority of humanity has!!!! This has nothing to do with race boundaries, religion, nationality... this is all about pure genetics and how our species (in fact how over 100 species on this planet) function. It's ground breaking work.

I'm actually only partway into this book and wow. Wow. WOW. If you're reading my review right now and you've never heard the term Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) before, stop right now, open a different tab, and google it. Read stuff for a few minutes. If anything you've googled resonates, BUY THIS BOOK IMMEDIATELY. Basically the author is the primary source for most of what you'll read online, and she has a very pleasant to read way of laying out the research and making it clear what things we know about HSPs and how and why we know them... it's like reading a well-organized textbook written by a friend you like. 15%-ish percent of us were born with brains that process this way, and if you're one of us, knowing about it will save you a heckuva lot of therapy, stress, and self-loathing.

I have always been sensitive. No, that is wrong. I prided myself as being NOT sensitive for years. To the point of disconnecting from my emotions. It took me a long while to come to terms with being an HSP (highly sensitive person). For anyone who is, I recommend this book. It is an illuminating look at the personality type of being an HSP and shows that being sensitive isn't such a bad thing. I've bog eared, highlighted passages, and put page markers all over it.If you think you are an HSP, or realize that you are one this is the book for you and it has helped me to not pathologize myself and to embrace who I am again.

This book is a mess; I found it to be largely fluffy non-sense based on loose generalizations with no scientific backing. I am a HSP, but this book is a complete joke. I am absolutely shocked there are so many good reviews.This book was a waste of time and should not have been written in its current form. The author should have waited until these claims could have been better substantiated either by more scientific studies/evidence or by coherent clinical experience rather than wild, all-over-the-place generalizations and annoying stereotypes. How disappointing for children to know that their mother knows the surprise all along.

My daughter was very upset that we didn't have a book to read for Mother's Day so we purchased this book and we will read it every year on Mother's Day until she gets older. It is a great story and exactly what you would expect from the Berenstain Bears.

Brought this over to my grandkids yesterday and I read it the first time through. Then my 8 year granddaughter read it to me; her 5 year old sister then read it to the both of us (sort of).

Granddaughter loves these books and I read one every morning to her. She is quick to let me know which ones she still needs for her collection.

My daughter loves ballet and has asked me to read her this book many times after receiving it for her birthday. My husband wasn't too sure we should be reading a book to her about wearing her tutu everywhere but we've not had any problems so far ;) It's a cute story that's an easy read. One I don't mind reading every day for a week!

My daughter (now 22) had this book when she was little and it was one of her favorites (so much so that it's in her memory box). Now I bought a copy for my granddaughter. It's an adorable story with great illustrations.

We do not allow our 2.5 yr old daughter to watch much television so she spends hours 'reading' books. She memorized this book relatively quickly and it became one of her favorites-- that is saying a lot considering the over 100 books she currently has in her possession.

This is a very cute book. I wanted a little gift (other than flowers) to give to my 5 year old granddaughter after her dance recital and I thought this filled the bill nicely. She hasn't really commented on it - everything was a little chaotic that day - but I thought it was really cute - so I was pleased to give it to her and it commemorates the day.

My 3year old has ya read this book over and over. My husband had a hard time reading the ballet terms that are in the book, but my daughter only wanted him to read it to her so I didn’t get to try. If you don’t know ballet, you probably won’t be able to pronounce some of the dance moves in the story.

3yo daughter worships this book. We read it almost every night. It's very sweet and hits home for my daughter because she, too, wears her little tutu everywhere. Pretty drawings, sweet story, perfect for a ballet obsessed little girl.

Very short book, the girls 21/2 and 4 1/2 where not that inpressed with this book after it was read to them 3 times!Although other children seemed to like it..

My daughter loves this book. Very cute pictures and story. Perfect for any girl probably 6 and younger who loves anything girly and cute!We started buying books instead of cards for our kids at Christmas. This was one that we bought and wrote a note and signed the inside cover, and hope to keep for many years.
