Will include this bk as among one of the better ones I've read so far this year. Sweet, endearing story about Josie a lonely young girl with above average intelligence and musical talent growing up in small town Levan and Samuel, an equally lonely boy of mixed heritage (Navajo/Caucasian), with a chip on his shoulder who captures Josie's heart and soul. Although the ages of the H/h start out young 18/13 yrs, by the end of the story Josie and Samuel are 28/23 yrs. I wouldn't consider this a YA story although it's suited for all ages, more sweet romantic fiction. The bond between Samuel and Josie starts off as an unusual friendship given their age difference and cultures but its Josie as the mentor who helps Samuel learn about books and music but its kindness, hope and love that are the underlying lessons. While there is such depth to their friendship, Samuel is aware of their age difference and keeps his emotional distance appropriate at all times.. Upon graduation Samuel is off to join the military and leaves Josie heartbroken at the loss of their deep friendship and a love left unexpressed. Upon Samuel's return to Levan 10 years later, this time it's Josie who needs Samuel as the mentor to help her heal from loss and learn about hope, love and letting go. Warning - there's a few Kleenex moments here with a wonderful HEA.
I am an Amy Harmon fan. I love the way she tells a story with a focus on characters in challenging situations. It is impossible not to love Josie Jensen. Josie is a young girl and responsible for running the house for her father and brothers. I love how she proactively learns how to cook and clean from friends and neighbors. She is strong, loving, and a gifted pianist. Her romance with Samuel Yazzie begins as what many people would say as puppy love or a young infatuation with a high school senior. Sam knows they can only have a friendship and moves on his desire to be a Marine. Many years later they meet up again. Both characters survive many curve balls that life throws at them.A lovely, emotional story that made me cry but also made me smile. Excellent.
I almost deleted this book from the get go because it started with details more like a documentary, which I just couldn't really get into and I wasn't sure where it was going, if anywhere. Fortunately, I kept going and it finally launched off that this was going to be about a girl's life beginning with the tragedy of losing her mother at a young age.So this ended up being a very sweet developing romance story from a small town area in Utah, though it didn't take place that long ago (can't remember, but I think it started in the 1990's. f feel this is basically a well written book, though it could use some editing regarding spelling etc. which I can overlook. I like that the places and some of the other historical content are real as stated in the appendix.. For me the two main characters were well developed and it was easy for me to relate to Josie, whose life experiences are the heart of the book (from around age 13 through her twenties). The characters in this story hold to Christian morals and there are some references to scripture alluded to along the way, I did not detect any Christian message of the gospel of God's grace here and I don't recall if this was touted as a Christian novel or not. I sensed a lot of good Mormon influence and values that I expect to be the belief system of the author. For me, this was all very good from the family and moral aspect, but if you hope for some strong Christian message of the gospel, it isn't here. That's fine, because most are not going to be reading it for thatWithout going into the details of the story, I guess the reason I don't give it five stars is that I got a little slogged down with certain details which were o.k. but made it drag a little bit for me in places. I thought it a bit predictable that Josie and Samuel were going to eventually reveal that they had fallen in love with one another and probably get married, the story still held my interest and I did enjoy it.
This is my second book by this author. I finished reading From Sand and Ash and absolutely loved it. That book was poetic and hauntingly beautiful. I thought this might be too but it wasn’t. It was predictable, it’s been written before except this version seemed to be for your “pure†goody goody type. Not that there’s anything wrong, it just wasn’t for me. It went on and on at times and I found myself wanting to skip parts. Wasn’t a bad book, just a bit slow and predictable.
