Whew, boy. I think I've figured it out. There's inspiration, there's perspiration, and then there's this shabby alleyway where desperate writers sneak off and enter a little hole-in-the-wall and for a small price, can buy a crummy plot and a couple of stock characters from a vat of stereotypes swimming around in overbrined, well-marinated, pickled person juice. There's one single female character who must float to the top pretty frequently, because I swear, I've read an awful lot of books about her (or someone EXACTLY like her), most recently in "The Couple".Our heroine, Claire, recently engaged to Angus, a hotelier about whom she knows nearly nothing, is introduced to us at her engagement party. Claire and Angus would appear happy, but Claire's stepfather accidentally reveals a previous love, Daniel, in an awkward incident during his engagement speech. We are speedily transported between past episodes in college, with Daniel, and his crazy ex-girlfriend, and the present, where Claire's ordered life seems to unravel at startling speeds.*Minor spoilers*The main conceit of the book, which is that Claire begins an affair with a man who reminds her of Daniel, is dreadfully diminished by the very end of the book (you'd have to read it to get it, but I advise that you don't). The end hints at very complicated mental pathologies that simply aren't apparent in Claire's dealings with the world on a regular basis--and is bound to irritate, rather than enlighten, the reader. There is also a neat little switch in narrative, which is cause for another head slap--not in a good way. Instead of trying for an elegant, twisty little thriller, "The Couple" seems to delight in attempting clunky tricks that fall flat; boring us with dull, flat unlikeable characters.Claire's headlong dash into an affair with Mark--Daniel's apparent doppelganger--and the dangerous antics he thrusts her into, chilled any feeling I might have had for her as a sympathetic character. Despite her realization that this clandestine love affair is fraught with peril, she seems to only think with her body (Claire's characterization is so silly; several times over the reader is banged over the head with the fact that she went to Cambridge--did she? Did she now. I've seen better decision-making processes coming from third-graders. More mature, too. Nothing could convince me that this character could get into the top university in the world. Nothing. She's an idiot.). She offers silly rationalizations for every profoundly stupid decision she makes.Naturally, everything "ratchets" up and "tension" builds. I guess. Claire makes more obscenely questionably decisions, even staying with Angus, who is heading toward abuser status, and continuing her affair with Mark, even jeopardizing her job to obtain information for him...The end is strange, even as it ties the strings together. Rather unbelievable; strains credulity. But the very last few sentences, as I said, hint at an overwhelming pathology that is supposed to explain everything, and maybe even continue Claire's madness into another chapter.I kind of wish I hadn't gone along this mad journey with her, and left her in her vat of stock characters--you know that one. The one where the woman makes the horrible decisions? And she tries to convince the reader that they all make perfect sense? Except...that they don't? And the reader is just dragged along for this nonsensical ride that's called a "thriller", but is really just a canned, bumpy ride in the backseat of a car with no suspension on a windy back road with tons of potholes?
A true psychological thriller and a terrific mystery, all rolled together under the question: "What is really happening here?"I enjoyed the double narrative (of Claire then - and Claire now) and followed the story, even if the past events didn't feel as dangerous and intriguing as the present.Claire is a young woman engaged to Angus, a wealthy businessman who tells her that he develops small hotels in prime areas for the frugal traveler. She is employed by the government; she takes part in immigration hearings which determine whether an applicant can be granted U.K. residency.Claire and Angus purchase a very special house in anticipation of their wedding, and Claire meets Mark, the Seller, and begins an affair with him because he reminds her of Daniel, her lost love of 5 years past. But something is wrong with Mark's situation, and Claire feels he is dangerous; she wants to cut Mark completely out of her life before her engagement to Angus is threatened.As to the book’s big “Gotcha Moment†(Chapter 24) discussed by some of the other reviewers. I am sad to say this: I think I missed the point. I didn’t “get†it. Perhaps I'm easily confused, but to my credit, I am adaptable in such circumstances. SO - I read the entire book and just mentally eliminated Chapter 24. Ah, that worked! Yes - That did it for me, because there was still a wealth of other "Gotchas" to enjoy. And I realized: This is a terrific book.There are some strange characters doing strange things--a pair of criminal types who show up at Claire's door and try to bully her. There is Agatha, a co-worker who is a friend but also a bit of a stalker and has been taking pics of Claire and Angus together. Then there is Nigel, another coworker; his crude treatment of Agatha (at her birthday gathering) causes Claire to douse him with a bottle of alcohol.There is a stunning and shocking ending, astonishingly unpredictable. I enjoyed the bombshell revelation, even if I did mumble to myself: "Where did the car come from? Wasn't it a bicycle?"FIVE STARS for The Couple, and (as they say) "You won't be able to put it down."
Claire is struggling to get over her relationship with ex-boyfriend Daniel when she is introduced to Angus, They immediately hit it off and decide to marry. Angus suggests buying a house from someone named Mark. Claire goes to look at the house and she is immediately attracted to Mark because he resembles Daniel. He calls Clare back to the house on the ruse of buying an antique mirror and chest at which time he gives her a gun to hide. (Again, no explanation and Claire does not question it and she hides it where he tells her to). After they move in, one day Clare returns home and Mark is there in the house. (It seemed rather strange to me that she did not even question why he was in their home, ask for the key and/or call the locksmith). The story goes back and forth between the present and 5 years ago when Claire was in a relationship triangle with Daniel and Julia, someone he was supposedly trying to dump). Claire and Mark begin an affair and this complicates things. I enjoyed this book but everyone was very unlikable and Claire was just plain dumb. It was far-fetched at times and also very confusing at other times. It is a well-written book and overall it is a good read although I felt like there were some things that had not been explained very well and some loose ends left. Certainly not a fan is this story or writing style. Skimmed so much as this did not keep my attention.
