As far as it goes, its good. However what many people need is a clear and detailed review of how add-on apps attach themselves to QBO. How do these apps drop data into accounts? Do they add accounts to the chart of accounts? Apparently QBO payroll does this but doesn't tell you it did. (As a result you end up with duplicate payroll accounts, the pre-set accounts in the chart of accounts and then ones added by the payroll account, which I presume is to make sure the payroll app has the proper accounts to drop taxes, wages, etc. into in QBO.) How about that QBO, some explanation? That's one of several reasons I bought this book and was disappointed that there wasn't much, if any, detail on this. I know this is labeled for DUMMIES but you don't really mean that. A more technical discussion of the programming API's or hooks for how QBO communicates with other programs would be most helpful for those who need to know more. And no that is not something relegated to some programming book. Just a simple explanation such as: QBO provides entry points (sometimes called API's) that allow apps to transfer data into or out of QBO and to add necessary accounts to the chart of accounts to provide a place for the data. Typically such accounts, if created, occur as expense or income accounts. Then send us to an appendix for the down and dirty details that most people would skip. I also fault Intuit for this because while they provide many videos, they are somewhat simplistic when you are trying to find out more detailed knowledge of how things work. Of course the same could be said of the app developers who don't give any detail about adding accounts, what detail gets dumped into which accounts and so forth. Most people will find enough detail in the book, but if problems are happening and you need to get down in the swamp of details, this book will not be enough.
Having just transferred (exported) QBO and seeing how different it is from the Desktop QB I've been using for years, I thought getting the Kindle version of this book would help. WRONG. There doesn't seem to be a usable or helpful table of contents OR Index-- I wanted to be able to zero in on the areas for which I had questions. Almost impossible to do. I would NOT recommend this book.
If you want to know about QuickBooks Online, Get this Book! Gives a nice overview, compares Online OB to Desktop QB, and then drills right down to the mechanics of the beast. Ever goof up and need to purge a company you uploaded from QB Desktop to QB Online? See Chapter 12. A few keystrokes erases your mess.ClayFort Worth, Texas
Pros: Teaches you the basic functions. If you know that you're switching to QBO a month prior from QB Desktop, it would be a little helpful.Cons: UPDATED: As I was entering in Sales Receipts, I decided to see if the book could guide me with reoccurring receipts. It couldn't. There are other items in which the book probably doesn't cover. As a result I've taken off another star. Don't buy the book.Lacks everything else. For example if you're a restaurant, how do you add sales receipts? If you're an online merchant, how do you best use QB Online? What if you have multiple credit cards under 1 credit card account connected to QBO? Etc. etc.
I rated this book 2 stars for the following reasons. If you are reading this review, you may be doing what I did before I bought this book. As someone who switched from the desktop version of QuickBooks to to QuickBooks Online, I found the online version severely lacking in options, settings and usability. Therefore, I was searching for something that would hopefully give me a few hidden "tips and tricks" that would help me get a little more out of the program. I do not recommend this book if that is what you are expecting. In defense of the author, she really did not have much to work with, since "what you see is what you get" with QBO; i.e., there are no hidden tips and tricks to use. With all of that being said, however, you may find this book helpful if you have never used the desktop version and are starting with QBO. You will find more information here than you get with the limited program "Help" menu.
This book is mildly helpful in my opinion. So many of the questions I have are not addressed. Perhaps a different business would find it useful. We are a dental office and so many things are different for us. Simple things like bank downloads, entering ongoing entries I don’t find in this book.
Probably a good reference for you if you are familiar with QuickBooks already. I quickly found out that you can't even rely on the table of contents, or the index to get to where you want to get to.Total waste of money.
Not great - too much information for accountants and not enough for the rest of us - most of it is all very obvious and you can find it on QB support - doesn't tackle the real issues for a non pro not accountant issue
