In this book, Loftus recounts some fascinating true crime cases in which she was called to give testimony regarding the unreliability of eyewitness identifications. Loftus is a research psychologist who participated in a lot of studies demonstrating how easily people's memories can be influenced. She also is known for the work she has done demonstrating how memories can be implanted wholesale in adults or children, as happened in the McMartin pre-school case.Loftus does give some illustrations of how police can contaminate witness accounts, but I wish she had gone into even more detail about the studies she has conducted showing how this can happen, and about the advice she gives to police officers on how to avoid such undue influence. Perhaps though more detail on this score would have made the book too long. There is a bibliography provided to fill in some of these gaps. Here the author concentrates more on the circumstances of the crimes themselves. As it turned out, she didn't always work on the side of the "good guys." She tells about testifying for Ted Bundy's defense. Thinking back, she remembers disliking how Bundy smiled at the prosecutor, something an innocent man doesn't ordinarily do. A few scattered comments such as that might make the reader wonder if Loftus' memory might itself be showing the kind of after-the-fact malleability that she saw it as her role to remind juries to take into consideration. Did she really suspect Bundy at the time?In several of the cases Loftus recounts, there have been interesting reversals since this 1991 book was published. Some of the other individuals for whose defense she testified, also later appeared to be guilty. She writes about the part she likely played in exonerating Timothy Hennis, accused of killing a mother and two of her children. More recently, a DNA analysis of semen found in the dead woman matched Hennis' DNA. But this case cries out for an updated, full-length account. Hennis' three trials raise the issue of how prosecution can circumvent double jeopardy laws, and might even call into question the reliability of some DNA analysis, since so much of the other evidence seemed to unequivocally point to Hennis' innocence. There were other reversals, going in the opposite direction from guilty to innocent, after Loftus' book came out. Loftus was asked to testify for the defense team of Ivan Demjanyuk, accused of being a sadistic Treblinka concentration camp guard. Loftus recounts how she agonized over her decision. Should she testify and appear to be betraying her Jewish ancestry by calling into question the memories of the survivors who identified Demjanyuk as being their tormentor? You can read the book to find out what Loftus ultimately decided.Other cases dealt with in this book include that of: Tony Herrerez, a camp counselor accused of child abuse; Howard Haupt, accused of child abduction and murder; Von Williams, accused of rape; and Tyrone Biggs, accused of assault and attempted rape. You'll find a number of insights into court procedure here that you won't find in most other true crime books. This book will also probably inspire you to read more about many of the cases mentioned, and to probe more deeply into the whole question of how accurate anyone's memory is, including your own.

Interesting, informative and well written. I was originally looking for something more technical but still understandable to the lay reader. Elisabeth Loftus is a cognitive psychologist and expert on memory, including malleability of memory, the misinformation effect, false memories, and recovered memories. This is more Dateline or 20-20. Each chapter detailing a crime with little physical evidence and primarily relying on eye witness testimony. Its hard to believe prosecutors would have brought some of these cases to trial let alone get a conviction. Dr Loftus primarily testified for the defense and used to add balance to the eye witness’s testimony. Memory is malleable. Many things effect what and how we remember. Although the bulk of the book is about the criminal cases she testified in, she details the research used to base her testimonies on. In many ways this was more effective because it give a example of how information derived in research and laboratory studies can be applied to real life cases.

This book, by memory specialist Dr. Elizabeth Loftus, describes a number of the cases in which she was involved to a greater or lesser degree as a specialist witness. The style is informal and narrative rather than dry and technical. It's an interesting read, but I found myself wanting a little more focus on her area of expertise and less on her emotional reaction to the various cases. Those who like true crime stories (I do) will enjoy this book, but someone looking for a more scientific description of memory might want to look at Dr. Loftus' other publications.

The was/is a landmark book both for new and/or criminal defense attorneys and for the layman who is interest in the criminal justice system. It is also important to those who wish to know how memory really works and how it becomes altered, either innocently or by manipulation. The book is clearly written and makes compelling reading. It ought be must reading for philosophy majors wishing to understand the fragile nature of knowledge; the inherent problems of perception and recall.

She is smart, honest, and onto something. The writing sucks; the thinking is sharp. I blame her co-authoress. Recommended, overall.

This is a great work of art and history. Author attempts to take the reader every step of the way from Hannibal learning to detest Rome from his father through all the battles that Hannibal won against the Romans. The author does and excellent job in going through all the available history and current thought about the 2nd Punic War. His Latin is much better than mine and he even puts a glossary in the end of the book!

O'Connell has done a brilliant job of describing the event in a way that is historically informative and enjoyable. The book is NOT a work of military history. It reads more like a work of historical fiction, but it's true.

A nicely-balanced book. Good groundwork and history at the beginning leading to the battle at Cannae; then the aftermath and redemption of Cannae's Roman survivors. The author could have spent more time and detail on Cannae's influence of then-future military conflicts. This would have provided better closure as so much historical prelude was offered. The ending was rather plain and felt rushed.

This is a thorough, entertaining and informative commentary of The Second Punic War (218-201 B.C.). The fluid, almost chatty narrative places the reader right in the middle of the action. Considering the limited availability of historical sources and their inherent bias towards Rome, the author fulfills the role of an impartial (and amused) historian very well. I always wondered how could Hannibal win every battle, but lose the war? What on earth was he doing in Italy for 15 years? How could his army survive? The Battle of Cannae (216 B.C.) was a devastating defeat and an enormous loss of life to The Roman Empire. Yet the author argues that no matter how brilliant tactician Hannibal was, he seriously misjudged the Roman resilience and resources. How could he not? How many armies one has to beat, how many soldiers to kill, how many territories to conquer before winning it all? One of his biggest mistakes during his long campaign was not attempting the siege of Rome after the won battle and forcing the budding empire to admit complete defeat. (To his defense, he had no siege equipment or expertise and could not afford tedious attrition warfare...). Then, he allowed the Roman battle lines to re-form before the climax of The Battle of Zama (202 B.C.) (Here the master of envelopment did not anticipate the quick return of the notoriously weak Roman cavalry). The title cleverly refers both to the condemned, then redeemed Roman veteran survivors of Cannae and the Roman decisions that became the seeds of the end of the Republic. Hannibal lost the war, but he induced an archetype of a character that could beat him and later challenge the power of the Senate by crossing an insignificant and shallow river named Rubicon. There is so much else to learn about here: the economic dynamics of Rome and Carthage, political conflicts, divisions in the respective leaderships, military history, the personalities of Hannibal, Scipio, Masinissa and Syphax along with countless and hapless Roman generals, a femme fatale (Sophonisba), battles, traps, ambushes, schemes, shifting alliances, and above all: panicking elephants. This is what a memorable historical account should be. An enthusiastic two thumbs (and two halluces) up!

Up front, this is a review of the Kindle version of this book. There are many adequate reviews of the content already, so I won't add more than to say that this was a well done book that presented some interesting perspectives on not just the battle of Cannae but events preceding and following that battle. It should be of interest to those who are interested in military history, but probably not those who consider themselves military history scholars. As for the kindle version, this book was poorly done. I typically read from my Kindle when I am at home or extended travel and from my iPhone during my daily commute and routine travel. This book includes frequent, large hyperlinks to the end notes. Often these hyperlinks are in the position on the page that an iPhone reader would hit to turn the page. Once this hyperlink is followed, it becomes 'the furthest page read' thus ruining synchronization between multiple reading devices. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to correct this. Also, it appears that the publisher has limited the content to only be read simultaneously on two devices. Had I know either of these things, I would not have purchased the book. This should be fixed immediately.

There’s an awful lot we can’t know about Cannae and about that era of Roman and Carthaginian history, but the author makes good deductions and brings the period to life, including the most devastastating battle in terms of lives lost. To this day, Cannae remains the most brutal slaughter and a stunning example of brilliant leadership - on Hannibal’s side.

I had always thought that the Romans handled the defeated soldiers with respect. The exile of the "ghosts - soldiers" of Cannae made me think of the poor treatment many of our Vietnam Veterans received. This is a very disturbing story. -- JRG

Great books. Does not descend into hero worship and presents Hannibal as a fully developed human being. As far as I can tell the scholarship level is very high for a popular book.

A good memoir but does she really get a grip on her life or does she have the courage to tell it all? I think not. Give Ms. Bell credit for her desire for independence, her life style and her wanting to write about it...and she writes well with phrases and paragraphs I reread with pleasure. Many of us search for what she wanted and like her find it (or it finds us) but cannot muster up the effort to write about it. What is unsettled in this memoir, from my point of view, is that while she goes after a life of independence in Wyoming and secures it one way or another, she does not resolve many of her deeply felt personal issues, especially her relationship with men, and is unwilling or unable to add that facet to her tale. She hints at an abortion, at affairs, at attachments but never tells the whole or true story or the details, leaving the impression with the reader that she hasn't explored them profoundly enough to talk about them in a way that will bring some closure. Too bad. LASTLY, this is book that NEEDS an accompanying map to help the reader follow her around her in ramblings...how could she and her editor miss this. Google maps or cover maps are not enough.

In general, I liked this book. I thought it was an honest, insightful, thought provoking look at the author's life. However, the lack of continuity was very distracting to me. The author constantly jumped from one time period to another with no warning, not only from chapter to chapter but from paragraph to paragraph. I found myself frequently stopping to ask, OK, now when was/is this? Because of this, I found the reading stressful rather than relaxing. I really felt I should give it 3 stars but I'm not a very qualified critic so perhaps this wouldn't bother someone else and it was basically a good book, I thought.

I first heard of Laura's book thru a book review. One of the lines quoted from Laura's book caught my attention where she described Wyoming...."And how, when you're used to sheltering hardwoods and rolling hills, the bare-bones immensity of Wyoming can make you feel like a sacrifice left on a slab for the gods to pick clean." Having moved from back east to Wy.over 18 years ago, I felt that she captured my own feeling for this place. Its a place to be experienced not just seen, and she captures the humbling sense of a wild, rugged land that presents all of its beauty and dares you to stay. One of the first things I noticed about Wy. was the women, single women who had moved here, miles from a shopping center, and claimed it as there own. I was one of those women, so I can appreciate Laura's journey. I also knew some of the people mentioned in the book so it made it even more interesting for me to read. I loved her writing style. She says more in one sentence than most can say in a paragraph! If you've ever thought of stepping outside your comfort zone pick up this book and journey with her, you won't be disappointed.

This was a slow go at first. The first half of the book wasn't all that interesting. Lots and lots of descriptions about scenery. Too much description and nothing much else happening. I halfway wanted to quit reading it (listening to it actually on Audible) but I'm one of those people who hates to quit reading a book I've already started so I plugged on. Around the midway mark it finally started to become more interesting when she began to go into more details about her life. I did finish it. I really can't say I'd recommend it to anyone though.

It was a little difficult to get into the book at first due to the writer's style of narration, but I discovered it was a book that required a "slow down" speed, thus I was able to savor each story. Didn't want the book to end. Loved it so much I sent a book to my sister to read. This is a keeper - I plan to read again and again.

Second time reading Claiming Ground and it was even better than first time. If you enjoy the journey, struggles and success of a real life women then you will not be able to put this book down .I smiled and cried and celebrated the author's successes and fears. Then there was the man thing. As if we/I can't identify....Only one issue, Laura please continue your story. I so look forward to another.Thank you.

What a lovely memoir. Her writing reminded me of other musings from the wide open spaces (Molly Gloss, Theresa Jordan, and Judy Blunt), yet having its own pathway. Threaded in with the descriptions of her manyvaried experiences as a ranch hand in the West, is the poignant unfolding of a bittersweet story of love, longing, and loss. I thoroughly enjoyed it and immediately passed it along to others I kbew would enjoy it as well.

I've been so drawn to tales of life changing moves and travels. This book lent me the experience of living outdoors, of moving through life with its attendant joys and sorrows. I was reminded that choices we make lead us into the experiences that summarily define us. I enjoyed reading the painterly prose of Laura Ball's life. It felt like my own for awhile.

American Furniture of the 18th Century: History, Technique & Structure, by Jeffrey P. Greene

Review

American Furniture Of The 18th Century bridges the gap between the art of period furniture and the craft of furniture making. Jeffrey Greene's meticulous research of styles, makers and period methods produces a rare combination of history and technique that is bursting with information and insight. Green first provides a comprehensive survey of design and construction based on the historical influences and tastes of the period. He then examines and explains authentic joinery, construction and furniture making methods. Throughout, he provides drawings, illustrations and photographs. And in a separate, full-color section, he treats readers to a close-up look at 18 important examples with a discussion of their design, construction and artistic merit. American Furniture Of The 18th Century captures the spirit of an age that boasted William and Mary, Queen Anne, Chippendale, Hepplewhite, Sheraton, Neoclassical and other enduring makers and styles. It successfully links the history, craft and construction of these classic masterworks in a beautiful volume of elegance and timeless designs. Highly recommended reading for antiquarians, collectors of 18th Century furniture, and students of 18th Century Americana. -- Midwest Book Review

Great book, so full of information and nice pictures. The exploded views of the pictured furniture shows the author's knowledge of the trade and excellent illustration talents with his assistant. Just a great book. The author did a fantastic job. And the reseller was accurate in the description of the book. Looked new to me! :-))

Even if you're not a fan of high-style period furniture (I'm not), this book is a fantastic resource. The discussions of joinery, casework, finishing and other techniques are invaluable to woodworkers who want to use traditional tools and methods.Interestingly, while these furniture styles still don't appeal to me personally, I have a much greater appreciation for them after reading Greene's book. He does a great job of explaining how the broader socioeconomic context of the time influenced furniture design ideals. Once you understand what the maker of, say, a Queen Anne high chest was trying to accomplish, you see the piece in a whole new light.

Greene's book does a good job of providing a woodworker (or others interested in period pieces) with solid information on many selected pieces from the era of the title. He does a good job of selecting pieces of good taste, and gives a lot of information on various details with just the right amount of how-to. There is also a lot of historical background info for those who like to know about the history of a piece or style before they build it. The pictures and exploded drawings (showing joinery) are excellent. Though not a comprehensive encyclopedia (it's not intended to be one) it is a good read from start to finish or a good reference book. Well worth the money.

I am a fan of the William & Mary style and have sought to build a tall chest for some time. Unfortunately, there are virtually no books out there about this beautiful style of furniture. I purchased "American Furniture" just to have another resource on early American furniture and was thrilled to find not only a thorough review of the W&M style but an in-depth look at the tall chest. Mr. Greene provides a history and exploded view of an example that would certainly rate "best" in Sack's "Fine Points". Of course, the whole book is great but it is the only text I have found to go this deep into W&M.

Excellent book

I love this book. It tells how the styles of early American furniture and design evolved from England and specifically what design details were used in America. It points out what areas certain design features became characteristic of and during what dates. The second half of the book is great information on how the pieces are constructed. It helps one appreciate the remarkable design and skilled craftsmanship from that era.

In the 18th Century, cabinet construction underwent the greatest changes ever seen in the art form. I wanted to understand the constructual differences between Jacobean, William & Mary, Queen Anne, Chippendale and the resultant forms. This book provides clarity and insight into those distinctions. It also gives excellent detail on constructing cabriole legs, including an excellent technique for constructing knee blocks, and in carving the Ball and Claw foot. Whether a cabinetmaker or a historian, this book is for you; doubly so, if you enjoy both endeavors.

Bought this book for a friend of mine. He had been wanting the book for a long time but could seem to find it anywhere, Brought a smile to his face.
