Review

"The challenge of using a textbook to teach phonological analysis is to strike the right balance between learning-by-reading and learning-by-doing. Bruce Hayes meets this challenge for us with this textbook. His writing is clear and accessible, and his thoughtful organizational choices promote a deep understanding of the goals of phonological analysis." Eric Bakovic, University of California-San Diego

I HATE PHONOLOGY, but this book finally made things clear enough to me that I could pass my PhD comps in Phonology. If you're as lost as I was (For example, after reading Peng's book) then give this guy a try.Well done, Dr. Hayes.

A good, easy to understand guide to phonology. It takes you slowly through a very complicated process, breaking it down into its component parts in order to make it easily understood. The beginning of the book focuses on single phoneme analysis, and in chapter four, introduces the features used to craft phonological rules, and from there moves into increasingly complex analyses, utilizing plenty of examples to illustrate its points. Yet the book itself is relatively small, which is a bonus if you have to carry around a lot of texts on campus.

Taught undergraduate Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology out of this book in 2013. Students found it understandable, and it's organized very intuitively. It definitely needs to be supplemented with another book for phonetics and with extra exercises, but definitely a good introduction to the subject.

This is a perfect book for readers who are the beginners of Phonological study. It is well-organized and comprehensive in almost all the topics in the field of Phonology. The abstract and difficult theories can be easily explained with a lot of examples. That is the most impressed point!

Not really for anyone who is not in a Phonology class, but this book is perfect for anyone who needs this book. In perfect condition. Mine came wrapped in plastic.

I thought this was phrenology. Riveting.

i'm not one who enjoys strenuous reading that takes forever just to know what the point of the chapter was, and this book was very straight forward when explain phonological concepts. I've only read the first 3 chapters for school but it definitely looks promising. I'd recommend it as a good phonology textbook.

Book was in excellent condition.

#2,496 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The Twelve is the second book in the The Passage trilogy. It continues the story of the key characters that survived Book 1 some 5 years after them reaching Roswell - and the events that occurred there. In addition, early on in the book it introduces a couple more time perspectives. One set in the days immediately after the original collapse of Project Noah and the over some 30 years before the events of the main timeline. We are provided with some new (and familiar) characters and different back stories that contribute to the overall telling of the trilogy. I enjoyed this as it gave it depth. Although I wish I had found the list of characters before I got to the end of the book!I started this book immediately after Book 1. It is a bit darker - in terms of lows that mankind has and will stoop to. That said the story is enthralling. Within minutes of finishing The Twelve I downloaded the final book City of Mirrors.

The Twelve is a fabulously written tale — suspenseful, lots of action, touching scenes, and most of all, a wonderful style of writing with many passages that are difficult to forget because of their almost poetic style. Although this series is about vampires (which is not something I would typically read about), this book is a twist on the creation of this standard vampire plot. What I found most interesting in this read is how the characters come across with their feelings and their desires. It’s a difficult story to put down.Like the author’s first book in this series, The Passage, I loved this book. But unlike The Passage, which I rated five stars, I’m giving this a four star. I felt it just misses for a few reasons. Several times at the start of a new section of the book, I had trouble understanding where it was taking place and what was the timeframe. He moves back and forth from present to the past, which is fine, but it was disorienting to try and figure out where in the timeline I was reading. I had a little trouble understanding some of the characters and whether they had been in earlier scenes. A few times after reading several hundred pages, the plot would then reference a character who may have been in earlier scenes, but I was often unsure. I felt this created some confusion. The few critical issues won’t prevent me from reading the final book in the series. I’m happily hooked on this series.

I've read the whole trilogy and am writing this a couple of months after so excuse me if I mess up a little or don't remember 100% of what was in there. So there are basically two ways of looking at this book - comparing it to the others in the series and the others in the genre. Compared to the genre it is way ahead, but to the rest of the series it is probably the least, however not by much.If you've read The Passage you already know that this author knows how to write, and you can see how much he loves his character as he spends a lot of time on them and makes them very unique. Some people might not like that so much time is spent on characters that for instance simply end up long ago relatives to a main character, but I do enjoy the writing style and brevity immensely so that does not bother me at all. And in the end he really needs to tell of Gray, Guilder and Lila so it was nice to have the Last stand in Denver in there to have some change of scenery between chapters. But once again they are so well written that you can't help but enjoy them. Altough some of the characters being so much fun can bum you out when their story concludes about a third of the book in.The rest of the book ties really well with the first third and is beautifully written as well. And again reading about the characters before makes one feel omniscient later. What I mean by that is that when the future characters like Alicia, Sarah, and Peter do meet some of the characters (I am not telling which) you know exactly who they are meeting and exactly where they are coming from which is awesome. Plus everyone that actually made it into the future had a pretty logical and sensible path and there are no leaps of logic or anything like that. Now on to the not so good - there are some big coincidences... now in a land without cellphones and mass transit etc. two character meeting a thousand miles away coming from different directions and different means is kind a crazy... but you got not two, rather like 10. Also some of the things that some characters and groups have done really don't make sense if you spend more than a minute thinking about it, but I can't say more since it will be a spoiler. The antagonists and the climax of the novel are pretty great, however be warned that the book turns into pretty dark places unlike the previous one. I've read interviews that the writer's daughter helped out with plot ideas and whatnot when she was pretty young (inspiration for Amy) but here I guess she grew up because s**** gets serious with some rape, murder, slavery, savage beatings, and general oppression going on in the second half of the book. I love this kind of stuff, but be warned it gets pretty dark.Overall if you love survival post apocalyptic stories this where you want to be, and although there were some things that irked me i enjoyed it immensely. And knowing what comes next having read the third one it is worth even more as there are things coming that you simply do not want to miss by skipping on the series.

In a tautly written tale both dark and poignant The Twelve continues the story begun The Passage. North America has vanished beneath a plague of humans transformed by a viral plague into blood feasting but cruelly intelligent monsters. The few remaining humans live amid the wreckage and try to survive. But a larger will is at work, and Amy - The Girl From Nowhere - is moving toward an apotheosis of incredible dimensions and leading her friends with her. They will meet in a frigid concentration camp to face humans who have willingly chosen to serve the virals in an unholy alliance. Who lives, who dies, what becomes of those we met in the 1st book all continues here.

Note: Amazon continues to feature reviews of earlier editions. What immediately follows is my review of the 50th anniversary edition published today, January 24, 2017. What then follows is my review of an earlier edition.* * *This is the 50th anniversary edition of a book first published in 1967. Jim Collins provides the Foreword and Zachary First the Afterword. In my opinion, Peter Drucker (1909-2005) is the most influential business thinker as indicated by the endless list of other thought leaders who continue to acknowledge his value and significance to their own work. He always insisted on referring to himself as a “student” or “bystander.” With all due respect to his wishes, I have always viewed him as a pioneer who surveyed and defined dimensions of the business world that no one else had previously explored.Consider this passage in the Foreword: “Here are ten lessons I learned from Peter Drucker and this book, and that I offer as a small portal of entry into the mind of the greatest management thinker off all time.” These are the lessons that Collins cites and discusses:1. First, manage thyself.2. Do what you’re made for.3. Work how you work best (and let others do the same).4. Count your time, and make it count.5. Prepare better meetings.6. Don’t make a hundred decisions when one will do.7. Find your one big distinctive impact.8. Stop what you would not start.9. Run lean.10. Be useful.“He was in the end, Collins adds, "the highest level of what a teacher can be: a role model of the very ideas he taught, a walking testament to his teachings in the tremendous lasting effect of his own life.”As was true of Collins and will be true 0f everyone else who reads one of the several editions, they will have their own take-aways. Drucker provides a framework in the Introduction, stressing while discussing the importance of eight specific practices that all great business and non-profit CEOs are committed to, such as asking “What needs to be done?” and “What is right for the enterprise?” The first two enable them to obtain the information they need. The next four help them to convert this knowledge into effective action:3. Develop action plans.4. Take responsibility for decisions [and their consequences].5. Take responsibility for communicating.6. Are focused on opportunities rather on problems. The last two ensure that the entire organization feels responsible and accountable7. Run productive meetings.8. Think and feel “we” rather than “I.”Yes, these are basic and obvious practices but they were not five decades ago. Until Drucker, thinking about management lacked order, structure, clarity, and focus. Borrowing a phrase from Oliver Wendell Holmes, Drucker developed thinking about management to “the other side of complexity.” To paraphrase, Albert Einstein, Drucker made management “as simple as possible but no simpler.”In the Introduction Peter Drucker concludes, “We’ve just covered eight practices of effective executives. I’m going to throw in one final, bonus practice. This one’s so important that I’ll elevate it to the level of a rule: [begin italics] Listen first, speak last [end italics]”...And, like every discipline, effectiveness [begin italics] can [end italics] and [begin italics] must [end italics] be earned.”The title of this review is a portion of one of Peter Drucker's most important insights: "The most serious mistakes are not being made as a result of wrong answers. The true dangerous thing is asking the wrong question."* * *I first read this book when it was originally published in 1967 and have since re-read it several times because, in my opinion, it provides some of Peter Drucker's most important insights on how to "get the right work done and done the right way." By nature an "executive" is one who "executes," producing a desired result (an "effect") that has both impact and value. As Drucker once observed in an article that appeared in Harvard Business Review at least 40 years ago, "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all." Therefore, the effective executive must develop sound judgment. Difficult - sometimes immensely difficult - decisions must be made. Here are eight practices that Drucker recommended 45 years ago:o Ask, "what needs to be done?"o Ask, "What is right for the enterprise?"o Develop an action plano Take responsibility for decisions.o Take responsibility for communications.o Focus on opportunities rather than on problems.o Conduct productive meetings.o Think in terms of first-person PLURAL pronouns ("We" rather than "I").The first two practices give executives the knowledge they need; the next four help them convert this knowledge into effective action; the last two ensure that the entire organization feels responsible and accountable, and will thus be more willing to become engaged. "I'm going to throw in one final, bonus practice. This one's so important that I'll elevate it to the level of a rule: [begin italics] Listen first, speak last." [end italics]This volume consists of eight separate but interdependent essays that begin with "Effectiveness Can Be Learned" and conclude with "Effective Decisions." Actually, there is a "Conclusion" in which Drucker asserts that "Effectiveness Must Be Learned." I agree. The essays are arranged in a sequence that parallels a learning process that prepares an executive to "assume responsibility, rather than to act the subordinate, satisfied only if he `pleases the boss.' In focusing himself and his vision on contribution the executive, in other words, has to think through purposes and ends rather than means alone."I highly recommend this to all executives who need an easy-to-read collection of reminders of several basic but essential insights from one of the most important business thinkers, Peter Drucker. I also presume to suggest that they, in turn, urge each of their direct reports to obtain a copy and read it. The last time I checked, Amazon sells a paperbound edition for only $11.55. Its potential value is incalculable.

Excellent perspective, insight and coaching for development. I was amazed at the insight Peter Drucker had considering when this was originally written back in the 1960's. Other books that have been written even in the last couple years echo some of what is in here. The topics and advice are still very relevant today even though some of the landscape has changed with the computer and internet. I would say that this is still on point for today and should be required reading for any aspiring professional in a large organization.

“Executives are not paid for doing things they like to do. They are paid for getting the right things done.”If you have read anything on leadership or management in the past few decades, you are probably already familiar with Peter Drucker. I first heard about Drucker a few years back while reading a book by a college president and over time Drucker’s name kept popping up everywhere. It was difficult to determine which book to read first. He has written dozens of books, and all of them have been universally praised. I chose The Effective Executive because it seemed to have a simple, straightforward message and it was under 200 pages. However, I was a bit weary because the book was first published in 1967.First, this book is amazing. It packed with great, applicable information. I actually think this book is more relevant today that it was when it was first written.Second, the message is amazing. The overall message is simple, “effectiveness can be learned and must be earned.” There may be some individuals better suited for leadership roles, but to be an effective manager you need to develop the skill of effectiveness.I will definitely be picking up more Drucker books in the future. Here are some gems:“Organizations are held together by information rather than by ownership or command.”“Working on the right things is what makes knowledge work effective.”“All in all, the effective executive tries to be himself.”

My first book by Drucker and I loved it. While it is clear how old this book is by the sole references to men as executives, the wisdom has not aged. I really appreciate the focus he encourages and emphasis on specific actions like time recoding. I could easily see myself coming back to this book.

I'm a business book junkie, but this is the granddaddy of all executive self-awareness books. It's also still the best.Although his examples are dated, Drucker still lays out the cleanest explanation and game plan for anyone who finds themself in the position of leading a company. This book is about both leadership and management, and if you don't understand the difference, all the more reason to buy it.

While the words might be dated, the ideas are not. There is something to be said about being effective and doing the best thing. I encourage you to invest your time and be effective by reading this book.

This is a very large coffee table book which I bought for my son who is going to go to Africa (I have one myself). The photography is wonderful and the narrative is wonderful. (The Maasai believe that all the cattle in the world belong to the themi). They have a warrior group which is the protector of the villages and young girls have a strict pecking order of boyfriends, depending on who is in the area (the warriors travel a lot).

All photos are stunning and the i love it! It's a classic book...

I previously read his biography and have been to Tanzania twice, so i was really looking forward to reading this book. It was larger than i expected (think coffee table book), but I loved it. Pictures were great and really enhanced the story.

Wonderful book and makes a great gift. The recipient was very happy!

this is an awesome book about the amazing maasai...great photos of some of the most interesting people on the planet.

After spending three weeks with the Kenyan Maasai, I fell in love with them all. This book has such wonderful photographs and cultural information. Great photos as well as narrative; gave me lots of information about their history. I recommend it.

A total bargain. It is a beautiful book which gave us a good orientation before we went to Kenya and worked with the Maasai in a free dental clinic setting. That month of work was a beautiful experience and enriched from understanding the culture.

Having just spent a month in Africa working in orpahages while also being able to take a tour of a Maasia Village in Kenya, this book reminded me exactly of my experiences there. The Maasia are incredible people and this book shows those of you who have not had the chance to meet them how amazing their culture is.The pictures are breathtaking. I felt as if I was back in their homeland.Great literature as well.Highly recommended
