Purchased and successfully quit within one month.I bought the book and left it on the coffee table for a week or two. Picked it up after I returned from a vacation. Read most (3/4), but to be honest, I never finished the book. I didn't need to. I smoked my last cigarette on July 14, 2015 and I have not looked back. I smoked for over 20 years and now I have been free for over six months.I started smoking when I was in high school, 15 or 16. Was a confirmed, moderate to heavy smoker from that point forward (1/2 pack to pack+ a day). I quit once for about a year in 2005-6, cold turkey. I hated it, was miserable, cried a lot and missed smoking all the time. Felt as though I was denying myself the joy and pleasure of smoking.The last six-plus months have been completely different. I do not miss smoking. I feel relieved of a burden. I am confident I will never smoke again and I am so grateful for that. I wanted to quit. I was ready, but I was intimidated and worried I would again miss it forever, so I just put it off over and over again. Then I remembered someone mentioning this book and I figured for less than $15 and with the volume of positive reviews, it was worth a shot.I think wanting to quit/being ready is an important piece of why this book worked for me. I was open to the power of suggestion and it helped me shift my perspective on quitting from one of fear and missing out, to one of joy and gratitude. My husband is still a smoker and I can't even get him to turn a few pages, so I know it's a personal decision and one that only the smoker can make... but if YOU are looking for a path to become a non-smoker, I suggest you give this book a try. I read this book in 3 hours. Next day I was still smoking. I was disappointed. Then less than a week later it's like the words soaked in. I quit smoking April 8th. Cold turkey. About a month later my dad ended up in icu on a vent. That's the most stressed I've ever been. I didnt even think about smoking. My dad was a smoker before that, he quit when he got out of hospital, and is already smoking again. There is something about this book. It gives you truth about cigarettes. And it reaches your subconscious without you actually trying. Some ppl have asked me if it's hypnosis. No. It's just the truth. Sometimes I dream i smoked and even in my dream I am so devastated that I will have to start over again. When I wake up I'm relieved. I thought i loved smoking. I didnt. I don't think about them now. I don't crave them. I can sit in a room with smokers and not even think about it(actually happened at my mom's). I bought 2 more copies of the book and currently lent them out. I am 47 years old and started smoking when I was 14. I have been a non smoker for 2 1/2 months now. Woohoo! This book and prayer really does work. You just have to keep reading and keep praying until the end. As I was reading it, I kept thinking to myself 'there is no way this is going to work' but it really did. I actually even quit before I got to the end of the book but I still finished reading it. If you are truly serious about quitting this is the way to go. It is really easy and didn't bother me a bit. It did take my brain some time to catch up with the fact that I didn't smoke any more. For instance, on my way home from work, I'd reach for my purse to see if I needed to stop and get cigarettes (Oh Wait! I don't smoke anymore, silly girl ...LOL) Or I'd reach for a cigarette to light when I reached a certain road I was traveling on (Again! Hey I don't smoke!) The only other down fall is that I did gain 10lbs. I really watched that my eating didn't change and it didn't but I still put on the 10lbs. The Nicotine, I believe does really affect your metabolism. So now I'm working on getting the 10lbs off. I believe in you, you can do it! Read the book and become a healthier and better smelling you! :) YES, I said better smelling you because cigarettes really do make you stink. You don't realize until you quit and smell it on others. A while back I was thinking, 'is Celine still writing and are there going to be any more adventures with Rory, Longinus and the gang?' It had been a while since book two had come out, so you can see why I was wondering. By happy chance I was flicking through the up coming releases in Fantasy and Science Fiction and lo and behold there was a third book coming out at the end of January. I authomatically pressed the pre-pay button and waited for it to appear on my kindle on its release date. Once I had it in my hot little hand (and yes my hands are really little), I got stuck into Slave City. It may have been a while since book 2's release, but Slave City was worth the wait. Rory is in top form as the impish urchin who says what's on her mind - she's not reknowed for her diplomatic tongue. Longinus is the smooth-talking Viper, an assassin with a fear of blood whose snappily dressed self glides through the pages of this latest adventure....well, mostly that is when he's not puking over the edge of Adelma's ship. This time our heroes have been tasked by Lady Martha to retrieve a Damisian machinist from the clutches of the Ayzir and help support the Ayzirian rebellion. With Celine's usual snappy dialogue, our larger than life characters fill the pages of Slave City as they lurch through some tense moments in order to accomplish their task. An all round great read and I'm looking forward to the next adventure set in the Viper and Urchin universe :)

Imagine having your station in life decided by a stud in your eyebrow. Ugh. Imagine living in a city separated into three tiers, each separated by high walls, each reachable only by a single set of stairs climbing ever higher with those on the bottom with little water and less hope, with those in the middle only sightly better, and then an elite at the top controlling the water supply for all. Toss in a not-so-secret revolution, a Romanesque circus, a mad ruler, an evil behind-the-scenes manipulator, and our heroes -- Rory, Longinus, Adelna, Cruikshank, and Rafe -- and get set for daring and scary adventures.

The authors detail and writing skill are amazing. This was a very enjoyable read as were her other books in this series. Pick up a copy, you wont be disappointed.

When I began reviewing this series, I looked at the characters in terms of three sliding scales: competence, proactivity, and sympathy. At first Longinus—the elegant, mysterious assassin—seems to be supremely competent, proactively controlling his life and choices, if (as a poisoner) he’s somewhat unsympathetic. While Rory, the street urchin, is at the mercy of a pitiless world, an orphan whose dire circumstances should demand our sympathy.Only…Longinus has a showstopper flaw for an assassin: he faints at the sight of blood. Not only does that punch holes in his competence and proactivity, but it immediately sends our sympathy levels soaring. Rory, on the other hand, is just so darn competent at being an urchin. Taking proactive control of her own destiny—even if “blackmail the assassin into making her his apprentice” might not seem the ideal strategy—she simply gets on with accomplishing her goal of becoming a master swordswoman.The newest release in the series, The Slave City, is set a fantastically well-imagined world of sword and steam-powered sorcery, with both Longinus and Rory starting again at half-mast for all three sliders. Under the firm control of the Marchioness and her daughter, they aren’t able to act proactively, nor can they follow their profession (freelance assassins). Both are questioning their own physical competence as well—Longinus because he’s epically seasick as they sail to Azir, and Rory because her life goal of becoming a master swordswoman is facing defeat due to her slight build. But both have also been defined in a significant way by the enemy they faced in earlier books. With no immediate enemy in sight, Rory and Longinus are each looking for their purpose and goals.The problem faced by authors of any series is that if you vanquish the enemy in each book, how do you move the series forward? There are two main ways to accomplish this, and author Celine Jeanjean does both. First, you could have the villain (in this case, Longinus’ evil sister Myran) vanquished but not dead yet, spinning off like Darth Vader in his escape shuttle to recuperate and plot again. Second, you could have your heroes take on an even bigger evil—in this case, slavery.Their group has been drafted to mount a rescue mission to the slaver-nation of Azir in hopes of retrieving their countryman—a Damsian machinist rumored to be working on an invention to enable his slaver captors to greatly expand their human trafficking. Stunned to find themselves honestly employed by The Old Girl (Marchioness of the city-state of Damsport), Rory and Longinus are now part of the classic adventure-trope, the five-man-band. If you look at another trope-defining example, Star Wars, their comparable roles are the following: 1. The Leader (Luke Skywalker): Rory, the skinny former urchin and now Logninus’ apprentice assassin is part of the team sent to the slaver stronghold Azyr to rescue a fellow Damsian. 2. The Lancer (Han Solo): Cruikshank, the genius machinist, is Rory’s direct opposite—tall, muscular, older, a thoughtful and meticulous planner who is nominally in charge of the mission. 3. The Big Guy (Chewbacca): Adelma, the hard-drinking captain of a smuggler ship is a massively powerful rage-machine tempered by three loves: drinking, her baby son, and her smuggling ship. 4. The Smart Guy (R2-D2 and C-3PO): Longinus, the elegant clotheshorse, is actually the assassin known as the Viper. His weakness at the sight of blood means he’s devoted his considerable and deadly intelligence to becoming a master poisoner. 5. The Chick (Princess Leia): Rafe, the aristocrat and master soldier, informs a frankly skeptical Rory that he’s her “love interest” and thus appoints himself her sidekick.As the five members of their little band attempt their rescue mission, they are forced first to confront, then to experience, and ultimately to aid the uneasy coalition attempting revolution against the evils of the slavers. By defining their real opponent—the institution of slavery—as the ultimate evil, any actions the team takes against slavers are by that definition morally imperative, and a signal to let the body count begin.Of course, that all adds up to a darker story than previous volumes. But the humor and banter between the members of the team keep things entertaining. Luckily for the five-person team, their enemies hadn’t read the Evil Overlord List. While not the greatest play ever, it is a good, solid dramatic work and definitely worth reading.

Ms. Park's play is one of the best plays I have read in a long time. her character's jump out at you and from the first page you are hooked into their lives. It focuses on the relationship between two bothers named Lincoln and Booth. The play has twists and turns and there is always a sense of danger looming. She develps both the characters and story in a very cleaver way, and uses metaphors for what a black man in today's white America may sometimes feel. As a white women I do not know what those feelings are like, but this play taught me what they may be like. read this play. It says something very important that we all should know.

Parks' amazing and masterfully written play explores a complex brother relationship that burns from the opening scene all the way through the dynamic and show-stopping conclusion.No wonder Mos Def, Don Cheadle and Jeffrey Wright gravitated to this work, and brought it to life like very few modern plays.The language is true to form & culture of post 9/11 New York, yet easily fits in the Post-Obama world, because the social dynamics haven't really changed.Would eagerly stand in line for a revival of this work.

Fantastic book! great story, great play, great writing, buy it.

I've read a lot of plays and, this Christmas, made it a point to read works that have won a Pulitzer or a Tony or both. I ordered Topdog/Underdog as an afterthought, having seen its negative reviews. But once I opened the book, I couldn't put it down. Suzan-Lori Parks has created, through the dynamics of two unique and riveting low-lifes, a portrait of the universal love/hate relationship between siblings. Booth and Lincoln are the modern, more desperate, Cain and Abel. You have to love them. Not a word is wasted in this moving piece.

No spoilers. I will keep it short. What I hate about this book: Filthy, offensive language. That is enough to keep me from recommending it. What I like about this book: The characters are in a situation in which it is hard to find a way out. They do only what they know. But there is irony, insight, humor, and a theme running through the entire story, if you just open your mind and see it.This play would have been better off with less X-rated language. And it does reinforce every ugly stereotype--IF you only look that far. This book has redeeming value, but you have to use the more cerebral you to see it--the knee jerk you just won't work.

While there are no graphic photographs in this book, some of the text describing what Nazis did to captured Norwegians may be too harsh for young minds. I'd rather classify this book aimed for more mature readers who want a cursory look at Norway's part in the war effort and its band of resistance fighters in the Milorg, or who want to know why the Vemork power plant was important. Neal Bascomb explains why the plant was important. He also profiles the physicists working there, explains Norway's relationship to England at the time, gives basic descriptions of "heavy water" and nuclear fission, mentions the German physicists fascinated in atomic power. He also profiles the Norwegian heroes of this story, all while avoiding deep military strategy which can bore readers.Bascomb shows all of the above in a mere 259 pages. The efforts of the saboteurs were invaluable. He also adds some historical perspective of the 1930s and the efforts of several physicists around the world experimenting with atoms, neutrons and protons.Bascomb begins by introducing the brave Norwegians who are part of this story: 37-year-old Norwegian Institute of Technology professor Leif Tronstad and 28-year-old professor Kurt Haukelid who were trained in England and Scottland, and members of the Norwegian Independent Company who participated in Operation Grouse/Freshman: 23-year-old Norsk Hydro worker Einar Skinnarland, JensAnton Poulsson, Arne Kjelstrup, Knut Haugland, Claus Helberg. The reading here is intense and thrilling as the men brave freezing lakes, harsh temperatures, night time operations and never knowing if Germans were listening in on their radio frequencies. Many of of the English working with the Norwegians on the airlift didn't survive the ordeal when two planes crashed and survivors were rounded up by Nazis and executed. It took several attempts to make a successful landing and travel on skis to Vemork and beyond, always with the mission of making the Nazis' efforts more tiresome. It's no wonder Norwegians are some of the best winter athletes.The text is easy to read. There are plenty of black-white photographs that add imagery to the narrative, and everything is presented chronologically. The chapters are short and the narrative is straight reporting without any emotive prose. The end results is a summary of the courageous efforts of the Norwegians and English citizens to unite against an enemy. A highly recommended read for novices of military history.

Neal Bascomb has written an excellent account of one of the most persistent, daring and underappreciated missions of World War 2 - the effort to destroy a chemical plant at Vemork in Norway which was producing heavy water for the Nazis' atomic bomb effort. The book is aimed at young adults but it will be equally intriguing for readers of all ages. The writing is crisp and Bascomb is adept at conveying the tension intrinsic in the whole story.The book mainly shines in three ways. Firstly Bascomb gives us a good background of why the mission was undertaken. He traces the beginnings of the Nazi atomic bomb effort and introduces brilliant scientists like Werner Heisenberg as well as bureaucrats like Kurt Diebner and Albert Speer. The proof of principle in making an atomic bomb is to first build a nuclear reactor. This is what the scientists needed the heavy water for. Bascomb also has capsule histories of parallel efforts toward the bomb pursued in Britain and the United States. Since fission was discovered in Germany and the country had no dearth of capable scientists it was assumed that the Nazis would try to build an atomic bomb; hence the motivation for destroying the heavy water plant. As it turned out the scientists received almost no support from the government and their progress toward a workable weapon was almost non-existent, but the Allies did not know this until 1944.Secondly and most importantly, the book shines in telling us the stories of the heroic Norwegian saboteurs, scientists and soldiers who were trained in England and who along with help from the British made no less than three attempts to sabotage the plant. The first ended in disaster, the second was successful although the plant was rebuilt, and the third finally doomed its precious cargo to the depths of Lake Mana. Foremost among the heroes of the missions were chemist Lief Tronstad and officer Knut Haukelid. Tronstad, Haukelid and their fellow saboteurs were infused with a deep love for their country and a hatred of the Nazis. Although they did not know what exactly the heavy water was going to be used for, the fact that it was important to the Nazis for building a potentially destructive weapon was enough to urge them to action. Bascomb gives us exciting and lively accounts of the dangerous campaigns undertaken by these men. Some of these are literally minute by minute descriptions of how the saboteurs made their way through the inhospitable winter terrain and icy cliffs of Vemork, how they overcame resistance from guards, how they planted their bombs, and how they often narrowly escaped capture and death.Lastly the book is enlivened with dozens of lively and intriguing photos of key personnel, treacherous terrain, German troops, life under the occupation and aerial shots. These photos add urgent meaning and drama to the ongoing narrative. The photos will especially ensure interest from younger readers.Overall this is an excellent introduction to a heroic and underappreciated mission in World War 2. It will be of interest to budding history enthusiasts and simply to anyone who likes reading about adventure and intrigue. It will be a worthy addition to high school and public libraries.

I own the book, but haven't read it (yet). In lieu of reading the book, I bought the audio CD. It took a good month to get to me since it shipped from the UK. That doesn't affect its rating - I'm just saying. To my surprise, the CD is only 2 audio discs in length. It says it's abridged, but it leaves me wondering HOW abridged or if the book book is truly that short? I don't know. The product is fine; the CDs played. The story was fun and funny but was a little all over the place for my liking. The humor was good, dry, accessible. Some of the stories were interesting. I didn't really care for the pilgrimage tale, and it seemed to take up a lot of play time that I think could have been better spent on anything else. A friend of mine recommended this book to me before my wife and I's trip to Ireland. I didn't have time to read it, and I got this audio version more than a year after having gone there. Entertaining? Yes. Would I recommend it to someone who loves Ireland? Yes. Would I recommend it to someone who's never been in a preparatory capacity? Nah.

It's a little embarrassing to be reading a book in a public place & guffaw aloud. It attracts attention but no matter, this book is simply too funny to allow yourself to care what others think. My husband & I enjoyed this book tremendously & decided to go to McCarthy's Bar in Castletown-Berehaven on our recent trip to Ireland. It's actually Maccarthy's Bar & looks exactly the same outside. We met Adrienne Maccarthy 4th generation owner, who is mentioned in the Acknowledgements section of Pete's book. She noted that my son & I said we were home when we saw the Kerry Red Stag Family Crest on the wall. We talked to Adrienne for an hour or so & when it came time to move on she refused to allow us to pay because we're family & said let's go outside for photos. The pooch on the cover is her recently deceased dog, Bailey. She said Pete was a great guy & stayed in touch often. We were so glad that the way Pete described the town, the people & the other areas in the book are exactly the same now as it was when he originally wrote the book back some 10+ years ago. If you enjoy English & Irish humor, you will enjoy this book....just be prepared for people to "give you the look" when you find yourself unable to surpress the laughter that's bubbling out of you.

A wonderful book with a cover photo of a Nun and her glass of Guinness and it gets better. Learn about the history, the travelers, all sorts of stuff you won't read about in other travel books. It isn't really a travel book wither,,, just a really fine collection of stories about today's Ireland and the great things going on. Enjoy!

I think if you have never been to Ireland, this book would turn you off. Some good stories with the twists and turns of the Irish. Drags along in places.

I love travel books. I have loved them with a perfectly idiotic passion ever since I was a kid in Seldovia and read The Royal Road to Romance by Richard Halliburton and with him climbed the Matterhorn and worked on a tramp steamer through the Suez Canal and battled cobras in India and was boarded by pirates in the South China Sea. After that I was incapable of walking out to Linder's Beach and looking at the way Cook Inlet fell off into the Gulf of Alaska without wondering where else I could get to if I set sail for the horizon.Richard Halliburton taught me that the best travel books are written by someone you wish had waited for you to come with. An Englishman of Irish descent, Pete McCarthy descends upon the island of Ireland with Rules of Travel, such as the eighth rule, Never Pass a Bar That Has Your Name On It. He never does, and in between never passing those bars among other things he climbs Croagh Patrick and goes on a medival purgatory, I think mostly so we don't have to. If you never wanted to go to Ireland, don't read this book because there will be no stopping you once you have.

This is one of the funniest and most entertaining books I have read. I have bought copies for more than a dozen of my friends who visited Ireland or intend to or claim the nationality. Pete McCarthy comes through a lovely man and a clever observer of human behavior with an abundant ability to see the fun in people and to join in their enjoyment himself. I wish I could have met him in a McCarthy's bar somewhere but alas he passed much too young. If you are one of Ireland's potential visitors, this book will speed up your plans. Even if you are not, this book is a great experience; a great laugh. I read a chapter again now and then if I have a sit down day. Highly recommended.

Simple, low effort, and practical! I’m a youth pastor and bought these for my confirmation class (13 and 14 year olds) and they really liked them and appreciated their minimalistic approach for their busy lives. Something they are far more likely to actually use, while still teaching good habits, how to pray and healthy spirituality day to day. Will be getting more! Will be getting a version for me as well!

Grant Hayter-Menzies's first book for Hong Kong University Press was Imperial Masquerade The Legend of Princess Der Ling. He is also the biographer of stage and screen stars Charlotte Greenwood and Billie Burke. This was a great true biographical story of a strong women raised to see beyond the limits imposed on her or others and by society of the time. She was a seeker of truth and value in all people. At a time when Europe saw China as a land to be exploited an older seasoned ambassador's wife saw a rich value in every ritual, every life, and around every corner. She sought to know others by understanding their culture. She survived the boxer rebellion seige and formed a respectful friendship across ritual, language and cultural barriers. Well studied and textbook written.

I'm sure this book is full of information, but I just couldn't read it. Did not hold my interest. If you are interested in China's history maybe you would find it interesting. It was a book club selection.
