A definite improvement over the first book. Still Marion is a weak lead. But improving so maybe by the end I'll actually like her. From the things I gathered Marion was a holy terror of spoiled teen before she lost her memories and while that doesn't surprise me thanks to the hints from the previous book, it makes me wonder how her sister Elise had let things get so bad. After all Elise is God and since Marion is her Voice they should have had some sort of relationship, right? And Elise is not one to indulge or spoil. How did this happen? I mean her own mother didn't want to talk to Marion, who's been missing for weeks and her foster sister hates her guts! If I was in Marion's shoes all these things would make me seriously consider not going after my lost memories, since apparently they made me a total bitch. But Marion is both selfish and more than a bit stupid she does precisely that. Despite her obligations and the lives depending on her, she follows her memories to an obvious trap that almost costs her her life. Yet there were some flashes of a more decent Marion, one who has the potential to be likeable and to come to life if Marion chooses to follow another path.Seth and Charity were the real stars of this book and I like them more and more. One of my theories that I thought of reading the previous book proved to be correct and now I'm trying to fit it in with the info from the last book of the Ascension series. The continuity isn't really good but maybe all will be explained in a latter book. One of the things that bother me most is that the Elise Marion remembers in some flashes and the one I do are two very different women. The last thing I want to talk about in this review are Konig and Nori. I always knew that Konig is bad news but I wasn't aware how bad it is. The guy has classic abuser tendencies and needs to be killed as soon as possible. Preferably by making some colossal mistake thanks to his overinflated ego. In fact he almost dies because of his stupidity but Seth helped him *sigh*. Nori was one hell of a disappointment. She seemed to be one of the good guys but apparently a set of chiseled abs and ass are enough to make her lose her mind, debase herself and become a greedy, manipulative little bitch. Damn, I wanted her to be on our side. The plot thickens in this book and managed to get me hooked despite me still not giving a damn for Marion. At least there's a promise that Elise will actually show up and I need to see Konig get his ass handed to him one way or another :) And hey what do you know, the next book might continue the trend of improvement. Maybe by the end of the series one of the books will earn a 5 star rating!

3.75 Marion you Might be Redeemable Yet StarsHow do you make some of your characters more interesting and the plot better in your second book??? Easy you tell everyone to go to hell. I loved the switch up to the focus of this story and was happy to tag along to hell with Seth and Marion. This is a really good example of why I don’t usually count a series down and out if I just so happen to dislike the first book in it. I really hated Marion in Cast in Angelfire and it really colored how I felt about that entire book. For the most part she was a selfish, partially clueless, brat and I couldn’t get past a lot of that. There are definitely reasons for it all and they make a little more sense when you read this second book.I gave this second book of this series a go simply because I liked Seth, he was the only shining star for me in the first book. The focus of Cast in Demonfire is a little about finding Marion’s memories but the majority of it is about Seth figuring out what is happening to him and why. He doesn’t want to tell Marion exactly what is going on because he isn’t sure that he can trust her and I totally didn’t blame him there.***Sure, Marion liked Seth right now. She might even forgive him for the monster he was becoming. But then the Canope would restore her memories, and she wouldn’t be his Marion anymore. Charity hadn’t spoken to people like Dana McIntyre, who characterized Marion as relentlessly selfish***Every sentence I read in this book made me certain that the last thing I wanted was for Marion to get her memories back. It seems that everyone who knew her from before seems to hate her for something. But Seth I really wanted to get to what is going on with him and get some more insight into his history. But then the book made me really scared to get those answers because what if I don’t like them.***“You know what happened to me in Genesis. You have answers.”“You wouldn’t be satisfied to know them. You’ll live in despair when you know the truth, lost in darkness deeper than any other within the Nether Worlds.” Her bony fingers slid down his shoulders, her left horn brushing his hair as she bent closer to whisper in his ear. “You don’t need to know the truth. You don’t need the Canope. Leave and be satisfied knowing ignorance is best.”***Not only do we spend some time in hell there is also the time spent at the winter court that is still in a state of upheaval. I’m not a fan of Konig at all and I really think he is just one step away from being a woman beater. But this book really made me despise him on multiple levels and left me thinking that he is going to be a mess of trouble for Marion in so many ways.Charity is actually the character that I thought got fleshed out the best. She is growing to accept who and what she is and it seems like she might not want to hide what that is anymore. It will be interesting to see where she finds her place to be in the world.Marion has come a little ways as well. She isn’t exceptionally likeable yet but she grew a bit in this book and definitely isn’t quite as bad anymore. She maybe just had too much power when she was too young and it colored everything for her. This should be a good learning curve for her and maybe she will be a better person this time around with or without all of those lost memories.I left this book feeling really excited for the next so here is to hoping that it keeps getting stronger.

It is an interesting turn of events really and things are heating up with the love triangle of Marion, Seth and the Sidhe prince who let me tell you is very needy of late. His about face when he sees an opportunity makes me want to warn Marion that he is self serving but I think she already knows that and beware anyone who gets caught in the cross fire. So many twists and turns and the "big reveal" at the end was interesting concerning who put this game in motion - all to find Marion's memories. I liked Charity as a character and wished she had more options in the end (No spoilers here) but maybe in the next book things will change.Seth's character has changed and he is still rescuing people sometimes from themselves and this will be a great series watching how he deals with his own revelations and will revenge be on the menu any time soon. There is never a dull minute in this action packed series and it is definitely worth buying this book, you won't be disappointed.I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review but I also pre-purchased it before I was given a copy.

If I was giving out awards for beautiful book covers, you can bet that Never-Contented Things would be getting one. The cover is absolutely striking, and immediately gave me an impression of the sort of story that it would have. Never-Contented Things was written by Sarah Porter, and it’s an interesting shift on the whole fae/changeling/human dynamic. That’s not to say that the typical hierarchy isn’t there, because it absolutely is. More that the perspective is different. Everything is from the human side, and it really makes you realize just how hard it could be to identify fae actions. Warnings: Two of the main characters in this novel are foster children. One of them had a pretty horrible life before she ended up where she did. Her backstory starts out as hinting, but will eventually outright state the fact that she was raped. There are no details, but it does come up from time to time. And it results in a few uncomfortable scenes. Also, like any true fae story, there are some kidnappings that occur throughout. That’s probably more expected though. Never-Contented Things was such a different experience to read. It had fae, and I believe changelings as well, and of course there were plenty of humans. Together it was and always is a recipe for disaster. Yet Sarah Porter managed to make her telling unique, despite the rules she based it on.The whole story is set in this perspective you don’t really get when it comes to fae stories, and I love that. I spent half the novel trying to convince myself that I wasn’t imagining things, and the other half worrying about how they would get out of their situation. I loved the different perspective on this tale. If I could get more stories like this, I would be thrilled. There are big bad fae as well, and not the type that appears to be bad, but are truly nice on the inside. I mean they are truly horrible creatures, through and through. It’s refreshing that Porter stuck to her guns there. I’ll admit that at times the novel did drag on more than was needed. The subtlety was appreciated at first – it was refreshing not just seeing the fae jump out and go ‘boo!’ to the main characters. But after a while I found myself wondering if they would ever actually see them - which might make for an interesting book, but it’d have to be done carefully. There was a lot of raw human nature in this book, both the good and the bad. I actually loved the juxtaposition between all the human emotions and reactions and the fae just doing their thing. It added a complexity to the world that I hadn’t expected. It took me a while to become attached to the main perspectives in this novel, but it did happen. Once I was invested in what was happening to them, I couldn’t stop myself from worrying and theorizing about what was going to happen next. The ending came as a bit of a relief to me. I was happy to see how everything played out – especially since not everyone got what they wanted. Likewise, not everyone got what they deserved…but that’s to be expected. Life is hardly ever that clean, especially when the fae have become involved.

This book is about extremely flawed people who make bad choices for good reasons, and covers some pretty dark topics. It's desperate and poetic and sad and hopeful. There are horrible cruel fairies and truly high stakes. There are teens who just love each other so much and don’t know how to show it right. There's the terror of being being known and understood by another person, and worse, being known and understood by yourself. And there's something so nice about reading a book in which the main characters care so hard. Everything in it, from the emotional arcs to the plot, are driven by how much they love and want to protect each other.Of these three main characters, none of them are straight, which I love. You have people who already know and are comfortable with their identities, and others in various states of figuring themselves out. Ksenia has a less defined identity in that there's some discussion of how she's not really a girl or a boy.Read for emotional, flawed, LGBT teens trying really hard to save themselves but mostly each other. Dark content but fiercely hopeful. Beautiful writing and a weird, tingly-creepy fairy world. Appears to be a hit or miss kind of book, but I loved it.If you like Holly Black's The Coldest Girl in Coldtown or The Darkest Part of the Forest, you should read this! If you read Sarah Porter's other book Vassa in the Night and liked the weirdness but could have used more sense-making weirdness, DEFINITELY read this.

This book made me feel awkward, disturbed, and a little depressed. There was not one happy moment. Not one.I wanted to read this book because I thought it was about the Fae. The summary hinted at having some story components to Fairie royalty. As an avid Fae/Fairie reader, I was expecting a story about either the Fairie Courts (Summer, Winter, etc) or the Seelie/Unseelie my courts. Instead, there is just a strange creature named Prince. That's it.The words "enchanted and changling" are used, but other than that, there really isn't anything that makes you think that fae are involved. The individuals stealing kids could be any random group of psychos. On top of that the writing style features these sophisticated ideas being told in childish terminology and lingo. Do kids still really start sentences with "Like"? It just didn't come across well. That dialougue was LIKE totally off the mark. There are some sensitive topics covered and honestly it gave me the creeps. I'm LIKE so open minded and this LIKE totally made me feel the jeepers 😂... seriously though, I'm truly an open minded person and can enjoy a mixture of literature and art. So the fact that this story felt very creepy and weird to me means that it will probably get a worse reaction from the general public.I can see the connections the author wants us to have with these characters, but I just don't feel it. For someone who doesn't read or listen to as many books as I do then this book might be hard to follow.I forced myself to finish this because it was my first ever Advanced Copy from NetGalley. If not for that, I would have gone without knowing the fates of these characters and I can't even remember the last time I didn't finish a book I started.Let me finish by saying that if you are interested in this book because you like fairie books, then you may not get what you want here. This book will fit for those who are interested in a more sinister type story. The main characters are in a toxic relationship where one is having second thoughts but scared to leave. I'm all for some real bad guys who aren't secretly nice guys trying to be bad. The bad guys aren't the problem. For me they are the only believable part of the book and they are fairies. It's the humans who say and do the unrealistic things. You may love this book, if so, we are on opposite sides of the prism. That's ok because if we all liked the same things then we wouldnt have any variety. The synopsis/summary for this one needs to be tweaked so that it's target market is hit correctly. Otherwise the book will get a lot of negative ratings because of how and who it it currently marketed towards.

Review

Cunningham himself has been to all the locations, of course, and reflects on the passion that makes him and others hunt them out: "Was I not, after all, like Scottie, hoping to reify an apparition, chasing a precious, enigmatic memory rooted in a fiction, the truth of which I desperately hoped I, in my own time and space, could somehow make real?" The attempt is fraught with disappointment; Scottie cannot make things real in time enough to prevent tragedy, and some of the sites which pilgrims might try to attain are changed beyond recognition (and some are complete illusion, as was discovered by the first pilgrims who tried to find the Argosy Bookshop, where Scottie goes to research Carlotta's history). But the search is inspiring for those who want to visit the inside workings of Vertigo. The inspiration suffuses all the chapters of this fine study, a worthy contribution to the numerous books devoted to increasing our understanding of a true masterpiece. (The Commercial Dispatch)

If you have never seen Alfred Hitchcock's _Vertigo_ (1958), stop reading this book review and find it and see it. You should do this first because it is just a truly entertaining and enigmatic movie, brilliantly set out and devastating in its denouement. You should do this second because even if _Vertigo_ is not the master's most popular film, most critics agree that it is the one with the most depth and richness for interpretation. You might want to do this third because of all the critical writing that has been done about the characters, and, for instance, the way Hitchcock tried to mold his actresses with the same forced control shown by Jimmy Stewart over Kim Novak in the movie. You will want to do this fourth if you want to enjoy critical appreciation on another theme, the place of San Francisco in _Vertigo_ and the place of _Vertigo_ in San Francisco, laid out in (now we get to the review) _The San Francisco of Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo: Place, Pilgrimage, and Commemoration_ (The Scarecrow Press), edited by Douglas A. Cunningham, with contributions by sixteen critics, artists, San Franciscans, and Hitchcock fans. You need to do this fifth because in this review, I may well give away plot points, and believe me, _Vertigo_ is a movie that you want to see the first time with as little preview as possible. Now, with that out of the way, I will tell you that I am newly eager to see _Vertigo_ again, armed with the knowledge in this entertaining and instructive book. I'm also eager to see San Francisco again! _Vertigo_ is not, of course, a travelogue (though one chapter here refers to it as a psychological thriller _traumalogue_), and Cunningham's book is not simply an examination of the many locales in the film (some important on their own, like the Golden Gate Bridge, while others, like the main character's apartment, important only because of association with the movie). You won't be able to take this book in hand as a guide to get to the thirteen sites evaluated here. You will understand their significance a lot better. For instance, two key settings are missions. The main character Scottie is assigned to follow the possibly possessed wife, Madeleine, of a shipping magnate. He trails her to Mission Dolores in San Francisco itself, where she stops at the grave of Carlotta Valdez by whom she is obsessed. Carlotta, according to the gravestone, lived from 1831 to 1857, and was part of the Hispanic past of San Francisco about which, in the mid-twentieth century, there was a cultural amnesia. "Spanish, you know," dismissively explains the shipping tycoon who has put Scottie on the case. The cultural misunderstandings contribute to the film's tragic events, with two culminations at another mission, Mission San Juan Batista which is a hundred miles away. Carlotta might have been among those born and raised at this mission, further deepening the film's questions about colonialism, empire, exploitation, and a tragic past. A chapter here is written by a man who for the 1995 San Francisco International Film Festival created a tour of _Vertigo_ sites, like Mission Dolores, the museum where Madeleine goes to stare at the picture of Carlotta, Scottie's apartment, Fort Point with its view under the Golden Gate Bridge, and more. Nowadays he takes his laptop on the tours with him to show clips from the film at each stop. As tour guide, he frequently gets evidence that his flock is not composed of just tourists or film fans, but those seeking something deeper. The travelers revisit the emotions of Scottie and Madeline / Judy by revisiting the settings, no matter how changed they are. "This is why a _Vertigo_ tour is more like a religious pilgrimage," the guide explains, "and an accompanying backstory about the sufferings of a saint with whom the pilgrim identifies, rather than just a recounting of the facts on a tour of historical landmarks."The pilgrims come full circle. But the search is inspiring for those who want to visit the inside workings of _Vertigo_. The inspiration suffuses all the chapters of this fine study, a worthy contribution to the numerous books devoted to increasing our understanding of a true masterpiece.

Good read

As described.

Great young people's book with some good hitorical insight. My 5th grade son read it for school and liked it. I liked that the "protagonist" was female.

Daughter loved the book. She read it because it was on her Summer reading list, but came away deeply moved by the story.

My son enjoyed this book as a summer read. He took it on vacation and could not carried it along everywhere we went until he read it completely. would recommend it.

Looks like a Perma bound old paperback. Nonetheless an enjoyable read.

Riveting

Although it was written in 1970, this story holds up well if you look past the dated cover. Set in Berlin, in 1938, this is the story of Lisa Platt, her older sister Annie and their parents. The Platts are Jewish, and the older Platts sense that things are not going to be easy under Hitler's rule. Their housekeeper quits, the children can no longer attend school, and more openly Jewish relatives and friends are suffering more and more hardships under the new regime.Lisa's father leaves for America, planning to send for the family, but things take longer than expected, and in the meantime, Lisa and Annie and their mother take a "vacation" to Switzerland, where they hope they can safely stay until they can join their father. Money is short, the mother's health is not good, and author Levitin has created a well paced story with tension, that still isn't too frightening for a 11 or 12 year old reader. Roughly sketched black and white illustrations appear every 10 pages or so. There are many more recently written and excellent stories of this time period (YELLOW STAR, WHEN HITLER STOLE PINK RABBIT, THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS, ASHES, IS IT NIGHT OR DAY? Just to name a very few.) If you come across this one at the library, check it out and read it! This story ends when the family is reunited in America, and there is a sequel: SILVER DAYS, for readers who are interested.About me: I'm a middle school high school librarianHow I got this book: checked it out of the library

The guidelines set down by St Benedict seem other worldly at first read. Talk of corporal punishment and sleeping ready for work and prayer make it easy to discard the book as history long gone, never to be relevant today. But there are more points of guidance for today then one may want to see. How much better to be disciplined to daily prayer, to speak with respect to elders and with kindness to those needing our care, and to know one's place in God's order than to live from circumstance to circumstance like being tossed about by the sea? Many thousands have been shaped by this rule and have lived successfully both behind monastery walls and outside them teaching and nursing and doing social work. Hospitality takes on new meaning having read this short book then simply matching napkins to table mats for a dinner party. Worth a read for history's sake and a second or third for lessons on living gently and wisely for today.

If you are looking for a simple version of the rule and do not want someone's opinion of what Benedict is saying then I recomend you get The Rule of St Benedict, editor PlanetMonk Books, translator Boniface Verheyen. I got this book first and it was not what I was wanting. The one by PlanetMonk Books is much better. It is broken up by days and set up so you can skip to the day you are wanting. And it is just Benedict's writing. I am much happier with it.

This is the little booklet that St Benedict wrote around AD 528, according to the introduction. While it is usually thought of and applied to monastic life, St Benedict makes clear in the prologue that his text is meant for anyone who wishes to "return to [God]." Thus this is not some kind of antiquated text meant only for religious. Not only may we learn from St Benedict how to more deeply love, obey, and give ourselves to God, but we get a very good idea of what early monastic life was like. Finally, the text can be read in one or two sittings. It's an easy read and one that if done prayfully and with the proper dispositions, can help you to fall more deeply in love with Our Lord.

Father Benedict's Holy Rule. Live life by it.

Let me just say that there are many editions of this classic book that are much more affordable, but if you are looking for a book that will last a lifetime, a book that feels wonderful in your hands, this is the edition you want! The Rule is a pocket-sized book, nicely printed on good paper, bound in genuine leather, with a ribbon marker. The leather is thick and soft, hand-bound over sturdy boards, and it even smells wonderful. Perhaps the perfect edition of The Rule of St. Benedict. Highly recommended.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in understanding in depth, the life of a religious and what their daily life entails, but also, a chance to to glimpse how humanity should strive to live with one another as it is written for. US in the holy gospels. I gave it five stars because I haven't found another rule except the bible that can compare, another good read would be john michael Talbot book ( the lessons of st. Francis). Living a monks life in today's real world. I think was very well written.

A must read

This is an excellent resorce of various texts on the Blessed Virgin Mary throughout history by His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, one of the truly brilliant and eloquent teologians in the Catholic Church today. A must have on anyone's bookshelf who is a true student of Marianology.
