Shane Bauer did a heroic job infiltrating a for-profit prison and giving us an inside perspective on one of the most violent and exploitative industries in America.It helps that American Prison is a complete page turner. If you are not a consistent reader of "Mother Jones," you may have missed their original expose of conditions inside contemporary for-profit prisons in America. A lot of us should read "American Prison" to learn more about what is being done in (some of) our names.Bauer went undercover, in his own name, as a guard in a for-profit prison operated by CCA (Now CoreCivic). He ties his experience in CCA's Winn Correctional Center into America's century-plus history, primarily but not exclusively in Southern states, of using convict labor to bridge the gap created by the end of slavery. Factor in for-profit prison operators, and you create an environment perfect for the dehumanizing of convicts and correction personnel alike.How does CCA make a profit on contracts that pay as little as $24 per inmate per day? CCA pays guards at its Winn LA facility $9 an hour, less than local burger flippers earn. Guards work for years with no raises but plenty of mandatory overtime because hiring (Even with virtually no minimum competency standards) can't keep up with attrition. Units are consistently understaffed with two guards assigned for upwards of 500 inmates. Social services and mental health programs are virtually non-existent. Medical care? One CCA facility has a 20-hour-per week physician for 1,400 inmates. Education? Rehabilitation?CCA's stock price took a hit when the Obama administration announced it would discontinue using for-profit prisons for federal detention. But investors needn't worry--that price recovered and more the day after Trump was sworn in.The ghastly conditions of plantation prisons--where 1 in 5 convicts died each year--are worse than you thought. And so are the outcomes of for-profit prisons. More violence, more suicides, higher recidivism, more civil rights violations.A sobering look in the prison and corporate hallways most of us will never have directly.

His story of working in the prison is a page turner. But every other chapter is on the history of slaves, freemen both white and black. Descriptions of the working and living conditions were unbelievable. Surely the people of the South can't be proud of that history. I had my doubts about for profit prisons and this book confirms them.

This book is *gripping.* It alternates between Bauer’s undercover work as a guard at a private prison and a fascinating deep-dive into the history of the prison labor system growing out of the slave system. It’s just so well-reported and well-written and so disturbing.I know Shane Bauer through his other book, his reporting for Mother Jones, and his important social media presence. One thing I respect about him is that he’s not afraid to spit out truth even when it’s unpopular or would offend the sensibilities of our time.This book is no different. It takes a deep undercover look at Winn Correctional Center and at the history of prisons for profits in general, but Bauer is just as critical of himself as well, and pulls no punches in describing how his experience participating in the prison system negatively affected him, and the catch-22 he found himself in while trying to navigate an oppressive system he didn’t really buy into but increasingly felt the need to participate in. His honesty is refreshing, and is something (I assume) that anybody who’s socially conscious but has been in a position of authority can relate to.The history of for-profit prisons was raw and intense without being preachy. I think if Bauer was teaching history classes, more students would pay attention.I didn’t read a lot of books this year, but am really glad I read this one. Highly recommended.

This book is a user-friendly one. The question and answer format is used to its highest possiblity. It deals with all of those questions we never bothered to ask our high school religion nun or college theologian, and now wish we had. As both a civil and a canon lawyer dealing in divorce and annulments, I cannot think of one question not asked asked and answered here. The index makes it even easier to navigate the concepts explored. The result is a book that explains the concepts but also tells you how to deal practically with them in the context of the Church's laws and canons. This book takes the whole package of married life and puts it into Catholic perspective. This start to finish result, especially starting at the time of the marriage, is the crux of what so many do not understand about the Catholic Church and marriage. Foster's approach is totally successful just because of its simplicity. The book should be read by those thinking of marriage and not just those far down the road. It's assistance to both is what makes this book so important.

It makes the study of annulments clearer for those without a degree in Canon Law. Especially love the fact that they author included cases for each legal reason for obtaining an annulment. I highly recommend this publication for anyone studying Canon Law as it applies to marriages and annulments. It will give you many "Ah,Ha" moments. Mine came bound in plastic and that is a good thing considering the use it will get.

This is a very practical book. It gives any new or older minister in the ministry some things to think about. My favorite chapter is the one when Martin describes some of the answers he would like to give, but perhaps shouldn't. The answers are the result of questions because someone just found out martin was a minister. I do, however, wish the two authors would have devoted a chapter purely to their bios. One paragraph devoted to their childhood, high school, college and first two years of full-time ministry for example. Yes, some of this was covered in other chapters, but the focus of the chapters was not their bio summary.

This was an outstanding book that hits topics I have never read about in this way. A seminary professor here recommended it for our class, and I can see why. 5 stars because it made my cry, laugh, and read it out loud multiple times. The wisdom and reflection that went into this shows me that God was and is with them. Will be sending this to a few of my friends who will appreciate it. Honestly, I bet anyone in a church setting could appreciate this.

Being in pastoral ministry can be difficult and yet incredibly wonderful. It is as if the writers were in my head at differ not points if my life, and I was encouraged by their wisdom, wit and honesty. If you are in ministry, thinking of going into ministry, or married to a minister, this is a great book to read.

This book held my interest because of the two authors giving their perspective on life in the ministry. I am a church member and this book gave me insight as to what a minister may be thinking,feeling and experiencing. I think it would be a good book for any church member to read. It makes a person remember that ministers are "just regular people"!I bought this book for a young lady in my church who is going in to ministry and suggested to her it would be a good read to keep her grounded in this vocation.

As a fellow clergy person, I found many of the essays within this text engaging and relatable. The authors have clear voices in how they write. I found the topics interesting, and certainly laughed to myself at familiar moments that I have experienced as well. This is a good read for those who want to learn more about what the life of a minister is like, or for those on a track to hearing their call.

A relatively bizarre book. The two authors write of unique experiences they have had in the course of their ministries. If you are like me, you will relate to some stuff, find some stuff amusing, and some downright controversial. This would be a good book to discuss with fellow workers in professional/lay ministry.

I owe a lot to my major professor at Drake University, Dr. Dale Miller. For instance, he insisted that this undergraduate, pre-ministerial, student buy and read Reinhold Niebuhr's Leaves from the Notebook of a Tamed Cynic. It's a diary the famous theologian kept during his thirteen successful years as a German Evangelical pastor in Detroit during the second and third decades of the past century. In Leaves, we see the burgeoning of the social consciousness that would propel Niebuhr into the front ranks of Christian Social Ethicists in the twentieth century. My favorite, entry, however, is one in which he describes his ambivalence as he attempts to make home calls. In those days, pastors could walk to their parishioners' homes. Niebuhr circled the block a couple of times before summoning the nerve to ring the doorbell.Every pastor, at least at the beginning of our ministries, has experienced similar feelings. The booklearnin' is over, the seminars finished, even the field education and Clinical Pastoral Education are in the past. Now the rubber hits the road, and we find out what we are made of in the day-to-day interactions with our people. Daniel and Copenhaver's delightful and disturbing book is the Leaves of a couple of current generations of pastors. Ministry has been in a process of changing over the forty years since I was ordained in the early nineteen-seventies. Pastoral care was emphasized heavily in my seminary. So was biblical preaching (which is not what many laypeople mean when they use the term). Finally, I discovered my talents as a teacher and a writer, and these three emphases formed the foundation for my ministry. Today's pastor may or may not be a seminary graduate. She is as likely to be pursuing a second, or even third, career. He will be proficient in the use of the Internet and multimedia in day-to-day communication and in the presentation of the Gospel in venues that range from the sanctuary to YouTube. S/he will be subject to the same economic pressures that affect laypeople, and the financial support ministers of my generation enjoyed will likely not be as available (seminary debt may be crushing, and more and more congregations are insisting that the pastor pay his/her own health insurance and/or retirement from an ever-shrinking compensation package).That Daniel and Copenhaver can bridge these differences of generation and expertise with wisdom, humor, and insight is a credit to their considerable abilities. They are different people, and not just in gender. Daniel is a senior pastor in a Chicago suburb. Copenhaver has been in a similar role for many years in New England. Daniel comes from a largely non-religious background, saw her parents divorced, and played for a time in a rock band. Copenhaver is the son of a highly-respected Congregationalist pastor, and his love and admiration for his deceased father are obvious. That these two are among the most admired and respected pastors in our denomination, the United Church of Christ, is perhaps symbolic of the inclusivity practiced here. Their book moves in a series of relatively short chapters, each author alternating, and several have been published in other venues, especially the Christian Century. They deal with everything from the inevitable, and sometimes interminable, meetings to a health crisis of one's own. The great strength of the book is that neither author romanticizes his or her work. People, including Daniel and Copenhaver, are present with warts intact, and graces as well. So is God.

What a great concept - sharing their lives openly.This book was interesting and funny.For those who put their clergy on a pedestal and out of reach. They are human and approachable, just like the rest of us..They also have the same needs, short comings and feelings as the rest of us.Most were called by God to be his stewards and not only bare their own burdens, but ours.These two are AWESOME!!!

I am a Tuttle descendant from Nathaniel, the youngest brother, so I found this book fascinating. I have been researching this family a quite a lot there is a large amount of alcoholism, depression, and bipolar disorder in the descendants, as well as genius and accomplishment. It is fascinating to read a roster of Tuttle descendants, from Winston Churchill and his "black dog" of chronic depression to Ernest Hemingway in his alcoholism and suicide. My line is also afflicted with of mood disorders and alcoholism; I can trace them back to my great-great-great grandfather.In Elizabeth's case, like many of the people in her immediate family, she may have been a bit "distracted," which is what psychotic symptoms were called at the time. However, her husband Timothy was what I would call an evil man who victimized and shamed her publicly from the beginning of their marriage. Like most women of the time, Elizabeth was not allowed to tell her story, which was a tragedy. And because of the notorious family history, even if Elizabeth had been heard, she would never have been believed.

Interesting book. The "notorious" Elizabeth is my 6th Great Aunt. She was an older sister to my 6th Great Grandfather. The Tuttle's certainly had temper problems. Brief mention is made of court records citing my 6th GG, Nathaniel Tuttle's, temper. He didn't kill anyone, though! Just told a few people off which didn't bode well in their Puritan Colonial society. Extremely good resource material for genealogy research.I gave the first book to a family member. I ordered a second book for myself. Colorful ancestors. Ava Chamberlain has the best resource references I've seen in a very long time and am beginning to use them for ancestors other than the Tuttle's.

The famous "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" Minister Jonathan Edwards had a mad grandmother, a fratricidal Uncle and an Aunt who killed her teenage son. But there is more to the story than the strain of violence and depression, there is a portrait of "self-made" American men who easily blamed the victims and moved on to prosperity once the inconvenient women were left behind.From early English settlers in Hartford and New Haven to budding American revolutionaries at Princeton University and Litchfield, CT, including Edwards' infamous descendant Aaron Burr, Ava Chamberlain has uncovered a complicated American past.

I loved this book and ordered another copy so I have one for both daughters. As a number of other reviewers have indicated themselves, I am a descendant of one of the notorious Elizabeth's brothers. The first part of the book deals with her parents and family so that was especially interesting to me. I also enjoyed reading about a Puritan family in general, and this one in particular with all the scandals, murders, etc. It appears that the research is solid (and saves me a ton of library time). If you are a William Tuttle descendant you will want to own this book.

The Tuttle family of old New Haven seems to find its way into many later stories. I have been reading about this family for a number of years. This book is a refreshing look at the family and the trials the children of William Tuttle in Colonial Connecticut.. All other accounts I have read of this family suggest a genetic stain on the family, one that led to insanity among some of the members. This account takes a new approach by looking at the family both before and after the fateful day that Benjamin Tuttle killed his sister Sarah. Upon understanding the effect of this event upon their siblings, it is possible to view future family events in a new light. I would highly recommend this book. It was enjoyable to read and gave another perspective on the early history of the Connecticut Colony.

I'm a direct descendant of William Tuttle and was very interested in this history. I knew bits and pieces of it but Ms. Chamberlain has tied itall together and woven a compelling narrative. Very interesting discussion of filicide and Puritan customs.

I was familiar with prior versions of this story, but utterly astonished at how worshippers of the Edwards family who turned this woman scorned for refusal to sleep with her awful husband into a slut. This book is masterful.

I found this book really interesting. I am descended from a sibling of Elizabeth, so it has special family interest for me. The author brought the times alive. A side interest is the exploration of the ways different writers (biographers of Jonathan Edwards) emphasised, omitted, or were wrong about Elizabeth's life. The organisation and indexing of documents helped bring the truth to light. It is primarily an academic book.

I've read numerous books on OCD and anxiety, including "Getting Control" and "The Imp of the Mind" by Lee Baer, "You Are Not Your Brain" by Jeffrey Schwartz, "Overcoming Obsessive Thoughts" by Clark and Purdon, and "Hope and Help for Your Nerves" by Claire Weekes. I recommend each of these books in their own way, especially "The Imp of the Mind" and "Hope and Help for Your Nerves". Each one has helped me recover from a period of anxiety. However, Dr. Grayson's book is on another level.I'm an OCD sufferer, having gone through many different forms over the years, including Harm-OCD, obsessing about obsessing, health concerns, Relationship OCD, and others. Other books were good, and they provided a lot of good reassurance, but as you may know, with OCD, reassurance isn't always a good thing. I found little to no reassurance in this book, instead I found strong motivation, tools for recovery, and resources to support me in the process.Dr. Grayson is a big proponent of Exposure and Response Prevention, the "gold standard" of OCD treatment today. In a way, there's quite a bit of "tough love", but that's exactly what we need. And at the risk of sounding less OCD and more schizophrenic, it's like Dr. Grayson could read my mind. So many times he said "You're probably thinking..." or "You know that...", and he was almost always right. He has a deep, deep understanding of the OCD mind. His understanding was more evident than any other author I've read.While reading previous books, I ignored exercises because I thought they were silly, contrived, or unnecessary. He addresses this mentality, and I found myself doing all of the exercises. The exercises are mostly very useful.He really lays it all out. He does a brief overview of OCD, but doesn't belabor it - after all, most of us who are reading this book know about it first-hand. He describes the various manifestations and related disorders, how their presence can present challenges, and how those challenges can be overcome. It's true that it's all treated mainly the same way, but it's naive to deny that there are unique challenges to each theme. He helps the reader design individualized recovery plans through numerous exercises. He addresses family and friends, teaching them how they can best support their loved ones with OCD. He lays out a clear plan to avoid major relapses and stay "better". Finally, he leaves the reader with resources for further help, including information on support groups, organizations, therapists, etc. He takes all of this complicated material and makes it easy - learn to live with uncertainty, and your life will improve.I'm confident in saying that this is the best book on OCD I've ever read. I absolutely recommend it to both the individual just learning about OCD and the learned, experienced individual. I will need to reread this one, but more importantly I will use its tools to beat my OCD.

This book taught me more about OCD than anything I've read. Dr. Grayson gets to the core of the disorder and touches all the bases in a way that many therapists don't. There really IS hope, although most people I've met don't believe it. I saw Dr. Grayson on Oprah--the show barely scratched the surface of what OCD is and what recovery can look like. I highly recommend this eye-opening, thorough book. Even if you don't think a chapter pertains to you, read it. You may be surprised at the information.

This is the best book on overcoming OCD I have read by far. It contains critical facts that I've not even seen mentioned in many other books, my interpretation is that Dr. Grayson has greater insight into OCD than many other practitioners. And that insight helps the reader have a greater chance of overcoming OCD.

Great book! One of the best on OCD. Dr. Grayson's discussion of our difficulty in dealing with uncertainty as the core of OCD makes so much sense and his ideas for how to make positive change and manage OCD are solid, research-based, and thoroughly explained. I would start with this book if you want to learn more about how to take the control back in your life.

I've been to therapy for a decade but it never "clicked" in my head.This book lays out all the therapy in an easy to understand way. It really spells it out and makes sure you understand.It provides so many solutions for the condition. You will be an expert in OCD disorder after reading it. You'll know exactly what you can do every day and every moment to manage and help overcome your symptoms.This is a condition that takes work to get over. This book tells you what the work is you need to do.

I am in private practice of CBT. This book is written by a true expert whom I had never heard of until a colleague told me of his form downloads. After viewing, I realized I’d get something from the book itself. Gradually going through the book to improve my existing skills. Always something to learn and this book is an example of that.

This book is the most in depth book on OCD I have ever read. Absolutely necessary for an OCD sufferer or someone within their family.

I'm only a few chapters in but I've learned so much! This is written for the average person to read and understand and has a lot of great information. Highly recommend so far.
