#79,725 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

#GirlBossLiked this book because it's about how one girl was able to market her skills on ebay and open a store to earn a living.Very detailed and descriptive about how to achieve success.Real life experiences of what worked for her and what did not and why. Also sections on credit cards, cash, security, how to hire others to work for you.To make creative resumes and have others actually read it, using networking social media sites to get ahead and what to do when you do get the job, how to keep it.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

This book is creatively put together. And her life sounds comical in a depressing way. She is interesting. I see why they are making a show about it. However...I wish I had known her company was being sued for wrongful termination of several ill and pregnant employees. Amongst other complaints and her own recent failures. I've read half of this book and for the first time in my life from purchasing a book I want to return it. She says in the beginning that it is not meant to inspire. What??? So I then assumed it was to merely entertain. But after reading how she scammed and stole and she basically brags about it. I'm having a hard time relating or let alone enjoying a book about a woman who grew up upper middle class, is now one of the wealthiest women in the world, and basically has never had much of a moral compass. This is what I've taken away from the first 5 chapters. Pass.Unfortunately, it did not come with a paid return label and the shipping would cost almost as much as the book. Lesson learned.

I mean, ugh... I hate writing this in the face of so much fanfare, but felt like I needed to get some frustration off my chest. The good:+ This book is incredibly compelling. I finished the entire thing on one 4-hour flight on 3 hours of sleep. She (or her ghostwriter) is a great storyteller.+ It truly is inspiring to read about a type of success not born of traditional privilege or ambition - I hope this book gets a lot of other young women out there to kick-start their dreams.+ I really appreciate that she didn't focus on gender at all - this wasn't a "girl power!" book so much as it was an "entrepreneur power!" book written by a girl. The less good:+ I had never heard of Nasty Gal before I picked this up. Never mind that I'm a fashion-oriented mid-20s female - I'll assume this is on me. Sophia seems to think her company is God's gift to Earth - I found her completely presumptuous both in her evaluation of her own brand equity, and hyperbolic in her descriptions of Nasty Gal as a "huge, explosive success" (I live and work in Silicon Valley, where nonprofits get $20M in funding annually easy and companies grow from 1 to 350 employees in two years - let's have a sense of scale here.)+ There was a consistent thread of put-downs and humblebrags in here, which happen to be two stylistic choices I absolutely deplore. Sophia claims to have done poorly in school because of the rigid system and been fired from jobs because she didn't care enough to try (essentially excusing herself from blame). She disses investors/VC culture, MySpace (the original foundation for her business), "boring" people with 9-to-5s, eBay, and several poor unnamed employees of hers. I get it - she loves herself. I just pray to God that no young woman reading this ever thinks it's ok to be this self-righteous.+ She never once thanks anyone. She had some nice words about some coworkers, but she never acknowledges the support her family gave her even as she was essentially a parenting failure, never thanks her customers for driving awareness of her brand, never admits that some of her colleagues are at least part of the reason behind her company's success.+ She plays the victim so much but never acknowledges any real failures (and now, hiring someone you thought was right for the role and then having to fire them isn't a failure - it's a rhetorical device used to assert your authority in this book.) She whines about "catty" retailers and petty competitors and never once steps down from her high horse to admit to the very real failures that affect every new business (like screwing up orders, dissatisfied customers, mis-spending capital, etc.)In sum, I hope I never get stuck in an elevator with Sophia, but I'm glad my flight went by quickly.

I read this book after reading She Means Business by Carrie Green (which is great!). Girlboss felt like I was being lectured by someone who thinks she is higher or above everyone else. She then goes on to give advice about getting jobs and doing the dirty work to work your way up the ladder - is this not the TOTAL OPPOSITE of a Girlboss??? Can't even keep reading....

I've had a paperback copy of #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso on my book shelf for about a year or more.I started reading it once before thinking it would be a self help book teaching me how to run my business and giving me pointers. Boy was I wrong. At the time, it wasn't the book I was looking for so I put it back on my shelf and moved on. Then a few weeks ago I found the show Girl Boss on Netflix and ended up binge watching it for 2 days straight. I was curious when I noticed it say it was "loosely" based on the book. So I pulled it back off my shelf and started reading it again. First, when they said "loosely," they meant it. Having said that I have to tell you, I ended up binge reading the book in the same manner as the show. I looked forward to nothing more in the morning then waking up, pouring my morning coffee, and diving into #GIRLBOSS while the house was still quiet. Sophia tells the story of how she built her business from an eBay store she opened while she was bored, then grew it into the mega business it is today. The fact that she did it all using street smarts, her own intuition, and little to no educational background in business is amazing. Her vibrant, take no crap attitude comes through this book in full force. Add a little humor and it made for a very fun read. It is easy to see how she got where she is so fast. Although this is not a book on how you can start your own business, she gives some pretty solid advice on things to do, and not to do in the business world, through her own experiences. The excerpts from other business women were also a nice touch.I will definitely be incorporating some of what I learned here into running my own business. It was the right kick in the butt I needed to keep me going. If that's what your looking for and you love a person with some attitude in her personality, this might be the book for you.

This is s fantastic book to help us understand the difficulties we have with the Bible. It is conveniently arranged from Genesis to Revelation so the reader can easily look up the answers to questions they may have.

The first part shows how people misinterpret the Bible.1. assume the unexplained is explainable.2. assume the Bible is guilty until proven innocent3. confuse a fallible explanation with God’s infallible revelation.4. ignore the context of a passage.5. don’t explain difficult passages with the help of passages they understand.6. build a doctrine on an obscure passage.7. forget that the bible is written for humans with human characteristics.8. assume a partial report is a false report.9. demand that NT quotes of OT be perfect.10. assume divergent accounts are false.11. assume the Bible approves everything it mentions.12. forget it is written in everyday language.13. assume rounded numbers are false.14. ignore language devices.15. forget that only the original is perfect, not every copy or translation.Appendixes on how Hebrew and Greek are written. In between are several hundred alleged mistakes, errors and contradictions. Most of which would never occur to the average person reading the Bible. Several have to twist the scriptures to force the “mistake” to appear. For example, a few are only there if you are a Calvinist, and have to be explained to mean what it doesn't say.

From my studies, I consistently find works done by Geisler are very well done, and this book is no exception. The book takes challenging verses and passages head on, and presents various views and analysis of which one is most likely correct from a conservative Christian standpoint. The book is laid out/structured nicely. The chapters follow each book of the Bible, and the verses and views are laid out in an outline format.I have not read the book cover to cover, but use it more as a reference for interpreting and teaching on verses/passages the book touches on. I also have not surveyed other books on biblical difficulties, but I would say that this one does a great job answering the major questions from problem passages in a concise way. It has served my needs as a teacher well, and I definitely recommend it as a reference on the subject.

I bought this book for a student dealing with skepticism...and yes, he was skeptical about the book itself. However, he later thanked me for getting it for him, and it has helped him to see that there are good answers to the tough questions we have about the Bible. A couple of things about the book:1) It is of course not comprehensive. It answers many questions, but no one can anticipate all the questions people might have. It does cover many questions in about a page or so (sometimes less), which shows the thoughtful reader that, even if his particular question is not listed, the other answers indicate that a good answer probably also exists for his particular question.2) The book is designed for concise answers. This generally is what people are looking for. If you want extremely detailed answers, you'd almost need a separate book for each question. This wraps it all up neatly.I have a different book on Bible difficulties, but I do not think it is as nice as Geisler and Howe...it was tough to give it away.

This is a really great start to understanding some of the potentially difficult bible passages. A wonderful resource if you or someone you know is having difficulties coming to terms with some of the stories in the bible. This does not have ALL the potentially difficult to understand passages from the bible. I have run into a few that this book does not cover, however I do think it highlights the most frequent used ones by non-believers or those struggling to understand.

Geisler at his best. I read this book cover to cover and consider it a keeper in my reference library. I cannot tell you how much I learned.I have notated pages I want to share with my Ladies Biblical Worldview Group. Fascinating, factual and easy to read.

¡Excelente! / Excellent!Recomendado para todo creyente que desea resolver dudas propias, primero, y también poder presentar de manera racional, defensa de su fe y de la esperanza que tiene. This book is recommended for any believer who longs to clear his own doubts, in the first place, and also guve a rational defense of his faith and hope.

There is so much junk out there, this is definitely worth taking a look at. Some explanations are reaching IMO, and we don't have to give people an explanation to every verse but rather a reason for the hope that we have. Decide to serve the Lord no matter what and this will help you but if your loyalty to God only goes as far as your next question; this will only delay unbelief. Keep in mind the bible was written thousands of years ago so there are some things we will never fully understand but the very important things are clear to us.

I had no idea at all what to expect when I received an advance copy of The Old Drift, but I am beyond happy; I am thrilled to have read it. This is a story that just pulls you in until you are completely immersed. To call it amazing and breathtaking doesn’t do it justice, and to say it is just the story of three multicultural families and the history of a country in Africa is an understatement. It's a sprawling saga, like a mystery you can’t wait to solve, a ball of string that keeps unwinding or an onion with many, many layers. It’s six degrees of separation at its best – the story goes from person to person to person and location to location, but all are cleverly linked. You suddenly look up and go “Oh!” because it’s that person or that place or that event again. The writing is magnificent. The Old Drift is a tale of a changing world, a changing nation, a changing people, with all the love, longing, desire, and loss that go with it. The cruelties and the exploitation, not just by the colonials, but by each other, are shocking. You get so involved with the characters that you want to step in and stop the bad times, let their hopes and dreams come true. This history was at once so foreign to me yet at the same time so familiar, so compellingly filled with the music and scents and sensations of Zambia brought to life by author Namwali Serpell. A cloud of sadness and futility hang over everything, yet hope, determination and courage push through. It’s sometimes magical, sometimes horrifying. It’s history, fairytale, romance and science fiction all rolled into one satisfying story. This is not a book you read lightly, not one you read to escape, but a book you won’t soon forget.

How much do you know about Zambia? If you're like me, probably not much. This wonderfully written, sprawling novel, however, may well inspire you (like me) to read more about its history and culture. Told through the eyes of three families, all linked in ways that might not be immediately obvious, this is a mix of fact and fiction, with some magical realism to boot. Beginning in 1904 and moving through the century to 2020, it's a sometimes frustrating look at a country and its people. Parts of this do drag a bit but power through because there's always something different around the corner. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Note that this is a long novel and might even be best read in hard copy to take best advantage of the family tree.

I received a copy of The Old Drift by Namwali Serpell from the Publisher (Hogarth/ Penguin Random House) in exchange for an honest review. The Old Drift is scheduled for release March 26, 2019.The Old Drift takes place mostly on the banks of the Zambezi River in a young country sprung from an old colonial settlement called the Old Drift. The story focuses on the intertwining histories of three families. We see the personal trials of the members of these families, their brushes with political agenda and movements, the battle against a virus, and a desire to frame the future. This story combines actual history, dreams of the future, and touches of magical realism. This story follows nine main characters, which initially concerned me. At the front of the book is a family tree, outlining how the nine characters listed in the table of contents are connected. When I saw this, I was worried that I would not enjoy this story. The truth is, I sometimes struggle to keep track of names during a story, so stories that follow a large cast through long periods of time sometimes lose me. The characters begin to blur together, and I fail to keep track of them as individuals through the epic. This was not much of an issue for me in this story. Serpell does such a great job of drawing clear characters that for the bulk of the story, I was very clear on who’s who. I did begin to suffer some blur toward the end of the story with the featured males, Jacob and Joseph. I think this partially intentional on the part of the author, leading to the mystery that if left at the end for you to imagine your way through.Serpell did a good job of taking me to a land that was foreign, yet had touches of the familiar. This former English colony was a fascinating blend of traditional African features and imported English touches. This was true of many elements of the story. I was never clear where the line was between foreign and domestic, between reality and imagined.

We now have a better timetable of ancient Egyptian history than any ancient Egyptian ever did. It is still full of question marks and debatable dates, personal and cultural data and borders. But we have reached a new milestone in this 1-volume reference. Peter Clayton here details the reign-by-reign record of the rulers and dynasties of ancient Egypt with 350 illustrations. The book is written on a popular level but has semi-academic teaching-tool quick-study charts. Its scope is vast, covering more than 3,000 years, but it readably captures the general dynastic line and much of the Egyptian artistic and engineering genius, created mostly in the south. The problem has always been that Egypt is the Greek name for what the Egyptians called "The Two Lands." This referred to the enormous delta wetlands of the Nile and the dry Saharan higher land running from the apex down to East Africa made habitable only by the course of the Nile. Clayton even has genetic charts showing the relation of Khufu to Khafre, the two builders of the greatest pyramid tombs. He has not delved into the mortuary religion of the highland Egyptians enough, or the class warfare, concentrating on who succeeded whom in the royal continuum. The main purpose of this book. And a significant one. All this despite conquests during the First Intermediate (no doubt by Semites), by the Hyksos, Ethiopians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, and their own imperial control of the Levant under their greatest warrior kings. It was changing all the time, in so many national and regional and cultural aspects. The larger questions of our having poor source material left to us by the ancient Egyptians and their neighbors leaves us open to debate. The ancient Egyptians surely led the world as the earliest creators of the finest art, sculpture, engineering, mathematics, pharmaceuticals, etc. But they lagged behind the Northwestern Semites in writing and literature, and living in the real world. Their tomb paintings portray life after death of their divine kings and favorites, in the prime of their youth, never more to age. A nice wish dream. So many. Too many. We are left still guessing about 1) their actual economy and borders throughout much of the period preceding the New Kingdom, 2) where all the wealth came from that was buried in the royal tombs, and 3) who the pre-Israelites were who lived in numbers in the East Delta as both a separate and semi-assimilated population at the nerve center of their lifeline trade with the Levantine Semites .This book nails down the most-probable successions, and is important in that respect. But what did all that art mean that the ancient Egyptians never saw? Because it was buried in the royal tombs, later to be broken into and robbed. The essence of ancient Egypt has to be inferred from scholar to scholar, with many different interpretations. But that means a lot of reading in other companion books to this limited timeline one. And more discussions on ancient Egypt than the 21st century alone will hold. Clayton brings us closer to the center, but we are still not all the way there yet in understanding this multiple-universe subject.--Al Sundel

I am over-whelmed with the information this book has on the Pharaohs of Egypt!! I wish there were more in depth information on each Pharaoh!! Wow!! I wish my book store had books of this caliber!! A rare book indeed on this subject!! Kudos!!

The book has color and black and white photos throughout and gives detailed information on each pharaoh/ruler. I have not begun to read the book yet, so I can't really give a completely detailed review of the book but I can say that I am going to throughly enjoy reading this and that I am extremely happy with the purchase. If you are interested in egyptian pharaohs, you should give this book a try!

Yes, this is a chronicle of each Pharaoh of ancient Egypt. However, the book contains multiple grammatical errors and could have done with a good editor. Also, the book appears to be more focused on archeological sites and trappings than a real discussion of each rulers life. As such, it is a little dry on the entertainment side.

never knew there were so many pharaohs mostly because most attention is paid to six of one half a dozen of the other nice addition to my library and my personal education

I really enjoyed this member of the series. It covered a huge amount of history in nicely developed chapters in a relatively short book. I never felt lost in a swamp of history, as I did with some other books in this series. I'd recommend this to anyone with a vague interest in Egyptian interest. If you find this book interesting, go on on to more substantial works.

The writing style leaves something to be desired, which is all that keeps this from being a five-star review; purely for information, the book is a treasure, but the narrative style is somewhat flat and uninspiring. This book is a marvellous reference, but a rather tedious read. It succeeds gloriously in its primary purpose, but it would have been a nice extra if it had been more compellingly written.

This is an excellent book. For a reasonable balance between depth and a broad overview of the subject, this book strikes a good balance. Certainly there is more information available on the history of Egypt and on most of the pharaohs, but if this book does not provide what you need, then it at least provides excellent background and a decent bibliography to turn to for more in-depth information. Nearly every pharaoh of consequence is pictured and all that are known are mentioned. Bear in mind that some are very obscure and have left little or no historical trace. This book, like "The Complete Valley of the Kings", is a keeper, particularly if you find ancient Egypt so fascinating, as I do.

I came to Guy Delisle backwards - I read the three volumes of his "Bad Parenting" first. They are quite amusing, but they are very quick to get through. I was impressed enough to want to read more of his work.I started with "The Burma Chronicles." It's about the one-year he lived in Burma (I'd guess the actual year was 2006 or so) while his wife worked for a French doctors-without-borders type organization. Guy is the primary caregiver for his young son (aged 2 or 3, I'd guess) and spends his days drawing comics, wandering around Rangoon, meeting locals, gleaning information from other ex-pats, and meticulously writing down all of his experiences.Nothing happens in that there is an overarching story, but we get a sense of the country through the various stories he tells over the 250+ pages. It's dense and one should read it over a few sittings, rather than all at once (figure two to four hours total, depending upon how fast you read). Guy has some strong opinions about the world and what is right and what is wrong, but at the same time, he is willing to laugh at himself and he is never afraid to show when he is wrong.A true delight.

Presented primarily in tidy iconic panels, Delisle's Burma Chronicles paints a vivid portrait of the incredibly isolated though vastly intriguing Burma culture examined by a stay-at-home-abroad dad limited by constant governmental censorship. Delisle discovers the Burma regime's intensive censorship campaign while reading a severely-edited Time magazine on pg.9 and commenting "In Myanmar, all magazines go through the censorship bureau. Articles that are unflattering to the country are systematically removed." The theme of censorship and its effects on Burma's citizens is omnipresent throughout the Burma Chronicles. The censorship bureau is acutely thorough, extensively editing the 80+ Myanmarian magazines every week (66). Moreover, the country's censorship extends to individuals. A small magazine snafu in which a government official is apparently criticized results in the mysterious removal of a student from Delisle's private cartooning class (197). A Nobel Prize winner is currently under mandated house arrest for her views against the government (33). Perhaps in response to the censoring nature of the Burma dictatorship, Delisle deliberately renders governmental officials not in his signature simplistic style but in fully-featured and in some instances downright frightening detail, as on page 22 a girl fawning over his baby retrieves her father, referred to merely as "the patriarch," and presents him like a stiff and leering corpse (23). The same drawing style used on this familial figurehead is used to depict the leaders of Burma as well--often in larger-than-life poses-- towering, for instance, over the country's deadly opium fields (207) or bulldozing homes (208). Delisle, by writing this account, is subverting the patriarchy's attempts to impose order through censorship of the Burma people. It makes sense that Delisle's most enriching experience arrives late in the novel when he mediates at a Vipassana temple (246-254). By placing himself into the imposed silence of the monks, he experiences true happiness. He is at initially uneasy, his thoughts spinning wildly on page 250. Then he resolves to enjoy the experience of meditation in solitude. Basking in what amounts to a self-imposed censorship of the external struggles of the world around him, Delisle finds peace. Perhaps the Burma government could learn a lot from the monks who roam the streets, praying and accepting gifts of rice; as Delisle remains silently studying himself under their guidance, he is controlled and contented. His experience is self-reflective, beyond the sway of larger governmental censorship.

This book was very eye opening about daily life in Burma at the time, some of the struggles the NGO and aid organisations go through to bring basic services to the rural populations and how people cope on a day to day basis with the repressive regime. It also showed a turnabout in the gender roles where the husband moved his life to support his wife in her career which is not usually the case. I found that Guy was a little bit of a complainer and at times was irritating, especially when he showed the importance and challenges of the work his wife did. I liked the cartooning style, it was very effective in conveying the tone of what was going on. It is a very good book and I would recommend it.

Once I started this book, I couldn't stop sneaking off to read it. It actually sucked me in and my whole world for 3 days was Burma, in black and white,Not much else to say except that it is really like a blog with drawings and humor peppered here and there. Very easy to digest, and would be a great addition to any PoliSci course or literature course looking to go multi-modal or just change it up a bit.I loved the fact that the hardcover does NOT have a (useless and gratuitous) dustjacket. The image that would be on the dustjacket is actually the hard cover.

That the book is not titled "Myanmar Chronicles" should be your first clue that there will be more than one look at the growing tyranny of the military regime. In a style like that of Pyongyang, he pecks away at the truth underneath the surface of cordial greetings and polite pretending that Burma is not in crisis. However, in an environment not quite as accustomed to totalitarianism, the underbelly is not quite as easy to find as in North Korea and you will get a feeling that the author is not digging deep enough. After all, he is the tourist and the wife who is seeing all the strife, sickness, and poverty. With that said, you will receive both a sense of how it feels to live there and what sets the people apart from others making them unique. There's also more information about the author himself and his motivations when traveling than in previous works, especially in understanding his style of art.Altogether, this is definitely an engrossing work with more experimenting in the author's art and writing style that has some nice payoffs even if it is not as dark or dramatic as Pyongyang.

Great book about a man how finds himself in a strange country, with a baby, not speaking the same language and the things that happens to him. The experience of traveling to a country so different and the language limitation was treated in a very funny way.Very identifiable. I think it the best of the series, followed by Pyongyang.Must read it!!

History told straight. This is an account from the Soviet point of view of the last convulsive efforts of the Nazi war machine to do something, anything, to distract the Soviet juggernaut from its march to Berlin. The overall aim of the first German offensive in Hungary, in January 1945, was to break through to besieged Budapest, raise the siege, and reestablish a front line that included Budapest and was anchored on the Danube. The offensive had no chance of achieving all this, and it duly failed. The Soviets took advantage of having repelled that German effort to use the breather to storm Budapest. In March, the Germans mounted another effort, this one aimed at cutting off and destroying some forward Soviet forces west of the Danube and Budapest. This effort, too, failed, again ignominiously. The Soviets caught the Germans time and again with clever ambushes, they introduced reserves in a timely manner, and they pretty much "schooled" the Germans. The Soviet phrase for operations that stand little to no chance of succeeding is "adventurism", and the tag fits. Still, the German forces made their efforts, and here and there they had partial successes, just as a poor poker player will win an occasional pot. The account details the mistakes, with unflinching honesty, of both sides. Reverses, when they befell the Soviet forces, are frankly put down to whatever omission, or misunderstanding of the situation, or other command failing led to the reverse. Likewise, Axis errors, and how those contributed to the ultimate Soviet victory, are spelled out.Frank honesty, warts and all, is not the hallmark of every piece of Soviet history. Perhaps times have changed, but there is also this: the Soviets, even when they openly air their own dirty laundry, look very good when it comes to these two battles. The author has gone to the remarkable length of including photos of a substantial fraction of the claimed tank kills achieved by the Soviets during the battle. The fact that the war ended very shortly after the latter of the two battles made possible a meticulous documentation of the course of the fight. Today's Russia does not, evidently, feel the need to bury even its relatively inconsequential mistakes during the course of a campaign which showcased the tactical maturity and strategic finesse of the 1945 Red Army---they did, after all, make all this source material available to the author. One omission, not exactly a lie, arguably remains. The author reports, correctly, that during the March offensive, the Germans made no particular efforts at maneuver. They just slammed straight ahead, and got whupped. But why, the reader thinks? And the answer must be, and from other reading I know this, is that the Germans hadn't the fuel to try anything more circuitous.

I was delighted to read this book. I have searched for a resource that could tell me about specific Soviet battalions and regiments that fought in the battles of Budapest to Balaton. This one also highlights the AFV variants. So, it is an excellent resource. Because it is translated from Russian, it loses some of its literary flow and is not very interesting to read. But that is not why I bought it. I recommend it for anyone interested in this particular aspect of the Second World War. However, the binding on the book is weak and several pages have already fallen out.

No personalities. No dialogue. No drama. A large collection of photographs of junked armored vehicles, and seemingly armored portraits of Soviet military personages. Book is replete with military unit designations, geographical locations, tactical maneuvering, and lineups of military assets, none of which are significant to the contemporary, casual reader. It is all very remote. There are no personal e experiences or anecdotes. I gave it a second star for professionalism.

The book personally interested me because my parents were there during these battles in Budapest. My grandfather was killed during the siege of Budapest. The book was well written with illustrations I’ve never seen before. Very good maps showing the battles and movements of both sides. I wasn’t aware of many of these battles and didn’t realize how many troops were involved in defending and occupying Hungary.

Last offensive of the SS led mobile forces of the Wehrmacht and they were just not up to the challenge. A sufficiently detailed accounting, that illustrates that the Soviets were 1st class FIGHTERS from the wars beginning and, by the end, as shown in this recounting, they became 1st class SOLDIERS.

If you like statistics this book is for you if you like the battle from the level of the soldier at the Small unit level this is not your book

The names of Russian units are hard to follow-there are so many. But, this book does a pretty good job explaining the complex maneuvers of large armored battles in the east immediately after the great German loss in December 44 -January 45 in Belgium. A lot of TO&E though. The maps are the best. Also, great photos, but few of Russian equipment losses. Helps explain why Germans count 9 of 10 losses to have been in the east.

Very interesting book on a subject that is hard to find any information on.

I'm conflicted with this book. While I think that it is a good way to get students who live in these situations to read and probably a pretty accurate representation of their lifestyles, I am disturbed by the perpetuation of the stereotypical way that women are portrayed in this book. There is no question that the double standards for men and women in relationships is hypocritical . It just seems to be accepted as the way it is. Men can do whatever they want and women are held to higher, monogamist standard.Having said that, the book is an easy read--well written and flows well.

This book afforded me the opportunity to walk in the shoes of someone so completely different from myself who has lived a life I can't even imagine. I appreciated how poignant and real the writing was in its portrayal of inner-city poverty. Unfortunately, there is SO much foul language that, even though that language fits naturally into the setting of the story, I do not feel comfortable adding this book to my classroom library.

Tyrell is basically a good kid, but at 15 years old has to deal with some adult responsibilities. His father is in jail and his mother is completely worthless, so Tyrell is the only hope his younger brother has for a decent life. When they get evicted, the family is placed in a roach-infested motel until more suitable housing becomes available. Tyrell's mother takes no responsibility for her own children, and even goes so far as to expect Tyrell to deal drugs in order to make enough money to support the family. Tyrell is determined not to end up in jail like his dad, and comes up with his own money making scheme. Meanwhile, his girlfriend, Novisha, and another homeless teen, Jasmine, send a few more challenges his way.I didn't love this book, but it was extremely popular in my classroom, even with reluctant readers.Drug use, language, and sexual situations make it more appropriate for mature readers.

Without the sex there isn't much of a story line. My kids equate it to 50 shades of grey (for kid). Thumbs down. This was a recommended middle school read. Bad idea.

Living in the Bronx, Tyrell is forced into manhood by the re-incarceration of his father and his mother’s inability to accept responsibility. Dealing with horrific emergency housing, Tyrell struggles to find a legal means of supporting his family and to make the “right” life decisions about school, relationships and family. The bitter ending, and true to life language and sexual content help to portray genuine hurdles that many economically disadvantage youth confront daily.

Tyrell is the story set over several weeks of a tough high school dropout in the Bronx. He comes from a down and out family...his father is in prison; his mother is someone who really does belong in Mitt Romney's 47% of the population, a woman who does expect the government to support her. Along with his young brother, the family lives in a roach-infested motel, a temporary dwelling for the homeless. One bright spot in Tyrell's life is his girlfriend Novisha, whose life and family are stable. The novel involves Tyrell's battle to keep his own head and his family's above water, as well as that of a girl named Jasmine who lives at the hotel. The novel is told from Tyrell's point of view, and is narrated in his dialect. As a result, it spares no punches. The language is often raw; the book does involve sexual and drug-related situations that Tyrell encounters. Be that as it may, Tyrell's story is intriguing, and certainly will attract high school students who wouldn't classify themselves as "readers."

I was really surprised this book was on my son's high school summer reading list this year. The story was decent but full of profanity. I don't think the profanity was necessary to make Tyrell's story anymore poignant. It would have been the same story without it.

Character authentic dialogue and youthful voices that you can hear, Tyrell is a realistic, contemporary first novel. Kids will love that the characters sound "right" while adults might struggle reading the dialect. The book has been very popular and well read by my older students...a little racy for those under 13-14 if not really mature.
