I love this so far. As many other parents have commented, the pictures are a bit odd. But how else would you teach some of these things... like "I give thanks (praying hands) to God"My daughter has been doing this and Hooked on Phonics... She just turned 5, 1.5 months ago and can already read books, and hard words like Mordecai, Something, She read Xanthan Gum! I really am pleased. This goes back and forth to help cement, and has some writing included. If your kiddos are anything like mine- I have to kind of stay on her to continue and focus, but she gets the material really well. I LOVE literature, and to be honest- I'm learning things too!

This curriculum is wonderful! My son is a young Kindergartner so while he was able to keep up initially, the workload did pick up rather quickly. However, after a few weeks, he became very familiar and comfortable with the program. I am continually amazed at what my son is learning and the concepts he is grasping. The study is broken up into 160 lessons ranging from 3 (few) to 6 (more common) pages each. In total, the daily lessons will take the child anywhere from an hour to two hours a day (not including breaks, which are necessary). The activities are repetitive at times, which can get a tad boring for the parent, but it is very helpful for the child. The curriculum is phonetic-based, initially going through each letter of the alphabet (vowels, short sounds), then progressing to consonant digraphs and blends, silent e, etc.The pages are colorful and help the child stay engaged. Some pictures can be a bit strange and therefore difficult to label, but the Teacher's Guide is always there to help.Overall, we are so pleased with this curriculum. We would recommend it to anyone looking for structure in their child's early education.

Absolutely amazing and well thought out curriculum combining various concepts into on lesson so the child will not get bored. It helped my daughter a lot.

Awesome phonics set! Very detailed with easy instructions.

I got this to supplement my son's reading and phonics at school. It is really user friendly (but would recommend getting the whole kit because some of the pictures are hard to tell what they could be). There is good variety in the activities yet they are similar that he gets the feel for what is expected.

Great set. Our daughter loves them and is staying very active with the lessons.

I am using this with my 4 year old girl. She is an early reader, and loves worksheets. I plan to complete book 1 this year (currently 2 lessons away from that goal!), and do the other three during her "true" kindergarten year, when she is 5.Pros:-fast paced-easy to use lessons in teacher guide-does a good job at the "spiral" learning method, which fits my daughter, and my personalities-I like how the readers introduce words and sounds they haven't actually "learned" yet, so that by the time they learn them, they will be partly familiar, and catch on easier-Teaches phonics thoroughly and straightforwardly, while also introducing sight words through the readers.-She loves the readersCons:-There is little to no Bible teaching or integration which was a big bummer for me. (We used Horizons preschool which is very bible-based, so I expected this to follow suit) I wish they would tweek the program to change this, or atleast have a bible program available. I may add in Lifepac or CLE Bible next year.-Some times there's a LOT of writing. I just choose two out of the 4-5 sentences and have her write those.-Some days the worksheets seem too much for a day (some days there are 3 (front and back), which is too much to hold her attention) I have either broken it into 2 days, (we're already doing the whole curriculum over 2 years) or circled every other item for her to do, so she skips half.-Lack of "fun" stuff, like coloring pictures, dot to dots, etc thrown into the lessons. Maybe 3 of such activities in the whole first book?Overall: I will probably use this again for my other children. Though it's not likely that I'll start as young. I don't think many kids would be ready for something this advanced at age four, probably many, not until 6.

Although I'd first heard of Alan Watts' The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are several years ago, it wasn't until I watched Dakota Wint's YouTube video Top 5 Books Every New Spiritual Seeker Needs that I was motivated enough to actually check it out. First things first—I know that I will benefit a lot from re-reading this book several times. It's extremely dense and packed with a lot of valuable information, a lot of which I likely didn't absorb during my first reading of the book. The basic premise of the book is that we have been told that we are isolated beings, "unconnected to the rest of the universe", which has led to our viewing the "outside" world with hostility and "has fueled our misuse of technology and our violent and hostile subjugation of the natural world". However, Watts asserts that this belief is mistaken and that we are in fact directly connected to everything else there is. In the beginning of the book, Watts discusses the concept of cultural taboos—things like making direct eye contact with another person or performing an act that is against one's religion. This leads him to make the following point:"The most strongly enforced of all known taboos is the taboo against knowing who or what you really are behind the mask of your apparently separate, independent, and isolated ego."The concept of "I" is extremely powerful and commonplace in most societies on Earth, and it is so fundamental to our modes of speech and thought, as well as our laws and social institutions. Watts spends many words of this book arguing against the concept of personal selfhood in favor of a more universal concept of identity—one that includes the rest of reality in addition to the components that we would normally judge as "ourselves".One of the other things I found interesting was Watts' definition of "attention" as "narrowed perception"—because when we attend to one thing, we ignore everything else. In Watts' own words: "conscious attention is at the same time ignore-ance (i.e., ignorance) despite the fact that it gives us a vividly clear picture of whatever we choose to notice."These are just some of the concepts that Watts describes in The Book. If either of these ideas sound interesting to you, I would definitely give this a read. I wish that this review was able to more fully show how wonderful this book is, but since this is only my first read-through, I feel like I was only able to skim the surface of its ideas and therefore will likely have more to say about it upon successive readings. I definitely give this one two thumbs up though!

This simple book has been one of my Bibles for over 50 years. It conveys the essence of Watts' thought and insight which provides a fundamental philosophic grounding wholly compatible with both modern science as well as a spiritual dimension. Though said to be the first to introduce the West to Eastern religion, he really breaks rigid boundaries of religion, inviting the reader to discover a Natural Theology that makes the Universe our home.

I bought this book because I have been very interested in mediation and the true nature of consciousness since reading "Waking Up" by Sam Harris. I will start with a brief caution to the prospective reader. If you, like me, consider yourself an epistemological realist, you might recoil from some of the language and ideas presented in this book. Initially, some of them seem like what many people would call "whew whew" or "hippie mumbo-jumbo." I think it is important to understand that this language is to be expected when attempting to describe the construals of subjective experience. If you have read Eckhart Tolle, I think you will be familiar with what I am talking about. All this being said, what a fantastic book! Watts has a masterful way of using analogies to express relationships that might otherwise go undefined. I especially like his analogy of falling from a cliff, and how it maps on to how we should live. He gave me a lot of valuable insight as to what the Self is. Most importantly, he showed me how in our seeking to relinquish the Self's control, we often reinforce it. The way he walks you through it all in the second to last chapter was masterfully crafted. It felt like what I imagine the "pointing-out instruction" of Dzogchen feels like.

For every brief insight or moment of wisdom Alan Watts imparts, he makes you pay for it with pages of blather. My word but this man likes to drone on. He frequently repeats what he must think are clever phrases (within one book and over several books) until you are sick of reading them again and again. He ruins whatever deep thought he's trying to convey by piling insipid words on top of each other. Here's a phrase he must have never heard: less is more. And with the sudden tinkling of the unseen bell I put the book down and did not pick it up again. Just so much smug western white male self love from this ivory tower icon. There is, to be fair, a good deal of insight in his collective writings, but there is far more cumbersome rubbish one must slog through to find it. So much of this is obsolete or moribund that it chokes whatever wisdom may be lurking within. At some point I thought I would read everything and copy out the passages that resonated with me and put together a little book of my own favorite sayings of Alan Watts, but then I thought of all the other books I would be missing out on in the process.

Skimmed through this book several times and very pleased. Lots of pictures and good descriptions. The author assumes you have a good understanding of the parts of the engine and general mechanic terminology. I have never built an engine, but will soon with the help of this book. Will update my feedback once I do.

Good book with clear instructions and good photos.Focuses on the Magnum engine from the 1990’s. One critique: it does not instruct how to properly install an older LA engine’s timing chain. Which I really needed verified; supposedly the LA motors have #6 at TDC on the compression stroke when the gear marks are at 6 and 12 o’clock? Was hoping this book would confirm. No luck.

This book while it is complete and detailed only really covers the rebuilding of a 5.2 Magnum engine. If thats what you have, great. If you have an early LA engine, 273-360 you will be disappointed. Additionally, there is virtually no parts interchange or casting number information on any of the LA -Magnum small block engines. Bought it used from an amazon vender - not their fault - or else it would be returned.

All it is is how to build a baisicaly engine little to no specifications included or real technical information regarding the differences between the engines and what parts can inter change and what can't. Very disappointed in the book all together tons of pictures and good descriptions but no technical information

The info is good but all the interior pics are black and white, nothing like the color cover.

My husband liked it a lot, exactly what he was looking for to help out in rebuilding his old Dodge engine!

Great book that came fairly quick after my order was processed. Good reference material for me to use.

Beginners will especially appreciate this book. Not a lot of theory here just step by step overhaul procedure.

Basil's homilia pros tous ploutountas, or “homily to the rich,” is a brilliant indictment of the wasteful ways of the wealthy. “Those who love their neighbor as themselves possess nothing more than their neighbor,” says Basil. If we value our luxuries more than the survival of our neighbors (and the whole world are now our neighbors), we have lost the love which is God in our hearts. “You seem to have great possessions,” exclaims Basil. “How else can this be, but that you have preferred your own enjoyment to the consolation of the many?” The wealthy deprive themselves of the true wealth which comes with loving our neighbors. “For the more you abound in wealth, the more you lack in love.”Also included is the essay kathelo mou tas apothekas, or “I will tear down my barns,” where Basil offers a brilliant exegesis of Luke 12:8. The man in Luke’s account who put his faith in hoarding rather than in love, saying, “I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones,” becomes an exemplar of the rich man who begrudges his fellow human beings what he enjoys. “Taking wicked counsel in your soul,” says Basil, “you consider not how you might distribute to others according to their needs, but rather how, after having received so many good things, you might rob others.”In an era in which our leaders tell us it is a civic duty to shop, the ideology of heedless consumption deserves to be called up for reexamination. Basil may offer the antidote to the “greed is good” economic philosophy that is destroying our culture, our democracy and our planet.C. Paul Schroeder is a brilliant translator and editor. By collecting essays relevant to social justice into this slim volume, Schroeder has done a great service to all his readers.

St. Basil possesses the fiery spirit of St. John Chrysostom, especially in matters relating to mercy for the poor. His words concerning the poor are more important now than ever. In this age of "every man for himself" and materialism, the poor have been portrayed as "lazy" and deserving of their fates, especially if they have made unwise decisions in the past. St. Basil claims that withholding bread from those who have none is deemed as murder if they should pass from starvation. He calls for minimizing personal possessions to give the leftover wealth to the poor. Our society encourages buying food and supplies in bulk, but St. Basil would probably condemn that as breaking the commands of the Bible that tell us not to worry about tomorrow, and to advice us to buy enough for today and give the rest to someone in need.Long story short, this book made me think twice before buying a new pair of shoes that I absolutely did not need. As a shopaholic, I felt that every page convicted me. St. Basil persuaded me to be more conscious of giving tithes. I think this is a great book that every Christian (and non-Christian!) should read because its words are so practical to live by.As a companion book, or perhaps as one to follow-up with "On Social Justice," I suggest "On Wealth and Poverty" by St. John Chrysostom, also published by SVS.

This is very good book on the topic and is very current despite the fact that it was written centuries ago. But if I have to choose between On social justice (By St. Basil) and on wealth and poverty (By. St. John Chrysostom), I would choose on wealth and poverty. I felt that on wealth and poverty was more convicting, blunt and cries loudly for merciful actions. Having said that this book (on social justice) addresses the topic of lending, borrowing and interest which is titled "Against those who lend at interest", this chapter has no equivalency in "on wealth and poverty". In "Against those who lend at interest" he speaks very clearly and in details not only about the practice of charging the poor interest about even daily money management. So overall, the book is great but there is a better read by St. John Chrysostom.

Excellent compilation of primary source material from Basil on this subject. He is very compelling. The only downside is a relatively small amount of content (only four legitimate sermons) considering the price.

This book discuses something that is very pertinent to us in society--how are we to relate to our fellow man? what is our approach to those that are less fortunate than us? and why are some better off than others? St. Basil gives practical answers to this questions in a book that is still relevant to us ~1600 years later.

Perfect Thank you!

This is another great entry in the Popular Patristics Series: a fresh translation of some of Basil's sermons with a fascinating Introduction which discusses how these ideas took shape in his life and ministry.

I highly recommend it

Review

"A brilliantly conceived and carefully annotated retrospective on American and Jewish events through the stormiest years of the 20th century... lovingly compiled by his son... enlightening reflections... The author's commentary... is itself extraordinary... And the sermons themselves are literary masterpieces--eloquent, passionate, even profound--and representative of the rabbinic best." RABBI LAWRENCE A. HOFFMAN, PH.D., The Barbara and Stephen Friedman Professor of Liturgy, Worship and Ritual, Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion "A Precious Heritage captures... Rabbi Ballon's character... his engagement... with the great religious and social justice issues of his time. This is also the story of a father and son... Yesh traveled a path that greatly deepened his relationship with his father and his Judaism. This is an excellent book." RABBI DAVID SAPERSTEIN, Director Emeritus, Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism; Former U.S. Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom "This book is a beautiful testimony to a life well-lived and messages that are eternal... Rabbi Sidney Ballon's story and sermons [help people struggle with faith] in timeless ways. What a gift to the Jewish world--and a beautiful sharing of soul with family and friends." RABBI NAT EZRAY, Congregation Beth Jacob, Redwood City, California "I recognize... [Rabbi Ballon's] wisdom and brilliance, his insightful social commentary, and his deep Jewish knowledge. He framed the concerns of the day with faith and shared the wisdom of generations past to provide a path to the future." RABBI AMY B. EHRLICH, Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York "In respectfully editing his father's sermons, [Yesh Ballon] not only brings honor to Rabbi Ballon's memory, he loves him into life such that together, they formulate their shared legacy and deed it to the future." RABBI NADYA GROSS, Congregation Pardes Levavot, Boulder, Colorado; Director, The Sage-ing(c) Mentorship Program "Rabbi Ballon personified the great generation of reform rabbis. He was dignified; Judaically and secularly highly educated. Most of all, he stood for something and was not afraid to speak his mind to high and low alike. That generation will not come again." RABBI EMERITUS JAMES L. MIREL, Temple B'nai Torah, Bellevue, Washington "Rabbi Ballon taught me that we continue in life by the deeds we perform and the lessons that we teach... Rabbi Sidney Ballon continues to live. His memory alone is a blessing." RABBI ROBERT LOEWY, Congregation Gates of Prayer, Metairie, Louisiana

Such a kick to read that I predict its popularity may well outstrip Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winner, Lonesome Dove. The Philadelphia Inquirer Texasville is simply great.United Press International With Texasville, McMurtry has written an ideal sequel. The characters from The Last Picture Show have grown deeper, wiser, and more interesting, just as McMurtry's writing has done. The Washington Post Texasville is a big ol' mess of a book: long, haphazardly plotted, exuberant, populous, good-spirited...the sexual activity is vigorous and varied and described with considerable relish...the novel's intelligence and its compassion are what really matter, and in this, Texasville is of a piece with all of McMurtry's best work.

From the Back Cover

Larry McMurtry returns to the unforgettable Texas town and characters of one of his best-loved books, The Last Picture Show. Texasville is a Texas-sized story brimming with home truths of the heart, and the men and women we recognize, believe in, and care about deeply. Set in the post-oil-boom 1980s, Texasville brings us up to date with Duane, who's got an adoring dog, a sassy wife, a twelve-million-dollar debt, and a hot tub by the pool; Jacy, who's finished playing "Jungla" in Italian movies and who's returned to Thalia; and Sonny -- Duane's teenage rival for Jacy's affections -- who owns the car wash, the Kwik-Sack store, and the video arcade.

TEXASVILLE picks up the lives of the main characters (and a sometimes bewildering array of minor characters) from McMurtry's THE LAST PICTURE SHOW 30 years down the line. The protagonist, Dwayne Moore, has suffered the booms and busts of the oil business, has lived for several decades with his feisty wife, Karla, with whom he has not only a passel o' children but also grandchildren, all of whom display Karla's chaotic character. Jacey, the beautiful but heartless local beauty returns from Italy to mourn the death of a son in solitude, but becomes involved in Thalia, Texas', turbulent preparations for the county's centennial. The novel abounds in quirky, sometimes irritating small-town characters, most of whom you may remember from THE LAST PICTURE SHOW. In many ways, Dwayne comes across as a small-town Everyman, mostly propelled into action from his habitual inaction, by the characters surrounding him. Alternately funny, poignant, humdrum, and (occasionally) irritating, TEXASVILLE provides an extended visit to a small, primarily rural community that might be called "Peyton Place, Texas."

First I watched the movie "The Last Picture Show" which was surprisingly good. After that I read the book which was also pretty good. I was surprised to find out that the book was a part of a trilogy. Immediately that I found out I bought this book. It was a disappointment. It is like this book was written by somebody else and the author merely supervised the work. The book is not bad, but not at the level of first one either. I am skipping the third one. This book is just not credible. If I wanted to read bed time stories, I would have read some tall tales. Sorry, Larry!

This was one of my favorite books to read. I was totally engaged by the story and the of cast characters in "Texasville made it worth while. I was happy to follow up on some of my beloved favorite characters from "The Last Picture Show" and was impressed by a lot of the newer characters as well. This book is a little bit longer than the first book but the overall story in my opinion is more exciting and fast paced compared to the former book in the series. I really love Larry McMurtry's style of writing and how he keeps me interested in his characters. I get the same feeling from "Lonesome Dove" as well. No wonder why I keep coming back to read his other works. It is always worth while in the end. I would recommend!!

Here's my simple guide to telling the worth of a book. If I'm on the bus on my daily commute and I miss my stop because I'm engrossed in what I'm reading, it's a good book. When I miss my stop several days in a row, it's a great book.Texasville is a great book! I was more engaged by the characters than I was in The Last Picture Show and I laughed out loud several times while I read it. Texasville is a sequel, but it can be enjoyed without prior knowledge of The Last PIcture Show. I might even suggest that you read Texasville first and then grab a copy of The Last Picture Show to see what that's like.In some ways the Thalia books are McMurtry's version of Updike's Rabbit novels. But I sure don't recall laughing out loud at Rabbit's trials and I certainly didn't miss any stops while I was reading them.

After reading "Last Picture Show" and realized it was the first book of a trilogy, I got "Texasville" asap and loved it too. His writing style and humor is just fun to read, and I have now started "Duane's Depressed". There might even be a few lessons about how people work in these books too.

Larry McMurtry is a wonderful author. But, I am not telling anyone a secret with this revelation. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Texasville. There were literally times that I laughed out loud, and my wife looked at me and asked what was so funny. Other times, I ached for Duane, the lead character. I feel as though I know these people personally. A great read.

A clear departure from the violence of the "Lonesome Dove" tetralogy or even the sadness of a dying town depicted in "The Last Picture Show", "Texasville" is a comic novel that culminates in a catastrophically hilarious Centennial celebration that goes terribly wrong. The battle of the sexes is clearly illustrated in this macho Texas town where women always seem to have the upper hand. Many of the "Picture Show" characters are revisited in their middle years, but many new characters are introduced as well, including Duane's beautiful and charming wife, Karla, and his children, the beautiful lady killer, Dickie, and the demons on wheels, his teen-age twins, Jack and Julie.

Mr. McMurtry is such a phenomenal writer Fred's many of his works that is read many of his works
