The New York Times Texasville shows off at his popular storytelling best. The Cleveland Plain Dealer Larry McMurtry is the most entertaining novelist in America.San Francisco Chronicle A raucous farce and coming-of-age without growing up...The Washington Post Texasville crackles with energy, humor, and passion.New York Post As Texasville unfolds, sentences practically tumble over one another in a race for laughs....McMurtry is hot after a seriocomic study of a man trying to find mental balance in a Texas of which he observes, "Seems to me it's so glorious it's just about driven us all crazy."...There are plenty of eye-catching roadside sights to enjoy along the route. The Wall Street Journal Mr. McMurtry's town, Thalia, is glutted with bed hoppers, maniacs, juvenile delinquents, stupid pets, suicidal bankers, and war mongering OPEC bashers -- all brought to peaks of comic energy....Madness reigns and it is quite amusing.Liz Smith New York Daily News Texasville is just as funny as can be. Such a kick to read that I predict its popularity may well outstrip Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winner, Lonesome Dove. The Philadelphia Inquirer Texasville is simply great.United Press International With Texasville, McMurtry has written an ideal sequel. The characters from The Last Picture Show have grown deeper, wiser, and more interesting, just as McMurtry's writing has done. The Washington Post Texasville is a big ol' mess of a book: long, haphazardly plotted, exuberant, populous, good-spirited...the sexual activity is vigorous and varied and described with considerable relish...the novel's intelligence and its compassion are what really matter, and in this, Texasville is of a piece with all of McMurtry's best work.

From the Back Cover
Larry McMurtry returns to the unforgettable Texas town and characters of one of his best-loved books, The Last Picture Show. Texasville is a Texas-sized story brimming with home truths of the heart, and the men and women we recognize, believe in, and care about deeply. Set in the post-oil-boom 1980s, Texasville brings us up to date with Duane, who's got an adoring dog, a sassy wife, a twelve-million-dollar debt, and a hot tub by the pool; Jacy, who's finished playing "Jungla" in Italian movies and who's returned to Thalia; and Sonny -- Duane's teenage rival for Jacy's affections -- who owns the car wash, the Kwik-Sack store, and the video arcade.

TEXASVILLE picks up the lives of the main characters (and a sometimes bewildering array of minor characters) from McMurtry's THE LAST PICTURE SHOW 30 years down the line. The protagonist, Dwayne Moore, has suffered the booms and busts of the oil business, has lived for several decades with his feisty wife, Karla, with whom he has not only a passel o' children but also grandchildren, all of whom display Karla's chaotic character. Jacey, the beautiful but heartless local beauty returns from Italy to mourn the death of a son in solitude, but becomes involved in Thalia, Texas', turbulent preparations for the county's centennial. The novel abounds in quirky, sometimes irritating small-town characters, most of whom you may remember from THE LAST PICTURE SHOW. In many ways, Dwayne comes across as a small-town Everyman, mostly propelled into action from his habitual inaction, by the characters surrounding him. Alternately funny, poignant, humdrum, and (occasionally) irritating, TEXASVILLE provides an extended visit to a small, primarily rural community that might be called "Peyton Place, Texas."
First I watched the movie "The Last Picture Show" which was surprisingly good. After that I read the book which was also pretty good. I was surprised to find out that the book was a part of a trilogy. Immediately that I found out I bought this book. It was a disappointment. It is like this book was written by somebody else and the author merely supervised the work. The book is not bad, but not at the level of first one either. I am skipping the third one. This book is just not credible. If I wanted to read bed time stories, I would have read some tall tales. Sorry, Larry!
This was one of my favorite books to read. I was totally engaged by the story and the of cast characters in "Texasville made it worth while. I was happy to follow up on some of my beloved favorite characters from "The Last Picture Show" and was impressed by a lot of the newer characters as well. This book is a little bit longer than the first book but the overall story in my opinion is more exciting and fast paced compared to the former book in the series. I really love Larry McMurtry's style of writing and how he keeps me interested in his characters. I get the same feeling from "Lonesome Dove" as well. No wonder why I keep coming back to read his other works. It is always worth while in the end. I would recommend!!
Here's my simple guide to telling the worth of a book. If I'm on the bus on my daily commute and I miss my stop because I'm engrossed in what I'm reading, it's a good book. When I miss my stop several days in a row, it's a great book.Texasville is a great book! I was more engaged by the characters than I was in The Last Picture Show and I laughed out loud several times while I read it. Texasville is a sequel, but it can be enjoyed without prior knowledge of The Last PIcture Show. I might even suggest that you read Texasville first and then grab a copy of The Last Picture Show to see what that's like.In some ways the Thalia books are McMurtry's version of Updike's Rabbit novels. But I sure don't recall laughing out loud at Rabbit's trials and I certainly didn't miss any stops while I was reading them.
After reading "Last Picture Show" and realized it was the first book of a trilogy, I got "Texasville" asap and loved it too. His writing style and humor is just fun to read, and I have now started "Duane's Depressed". There might even be a few lessons about how people work in these books too.
Larry McMurtry is a wonderful author. But, I am not telling anyone a secret with this revelation. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Texasville. There were literally times that I laughed out loud, and my wife looked at me and asked what was so funny. Other times, I ached for Duane, the lead character. I feel as though I know these people personally. A great read.
A clear departure from the violence of the "Lonesome Dove" tetralogy or even the sadness of a dying town depicted in "The Last Picture Show", "Texasville" is a comic novel that culminates in a catastrophically hilarious Centennial celebration that goes terribly wrong. The battle of the sexes is clearly illustrated in this macho Texas town where women always seem to have the upper hand. Many of the "Picture Show" characters are revisited in their middle years, but many new characters are introduced as well, including Duane's beautiful and charming wife, Karla, and his children, the beautiful lady killer, Dickie, and the demons on wheels, his teen-age twins, Jack and Julie.
Mr. McMurtry is such a phenomenal writer Fred's many of his works that is read many of his works
