More history than a salacious retelling, this meticulously crafted book addresses a number of issues of concern to people of faith. Hubert Wolf begins by setting the scene: the Roman Catholic Church has survived the Napoleonic era but a new period of social unrest and religious scepticism is abroad. The Popes of the time wish to reassert their temporal and spiritual control over the Papal States. The curia is divided between advocates for a more mystical devotion (the Zelanti) and advocates for a wider use of reason (Politicanti))who would reach out and try to unify European Christians within a Catholic framework. The Zelanti expected, especially in the region around Rome, to find miracles and to discover new saints. They were willing to believe in voices from beyond the grave and spirit visitations and to use them to buttress a burning faith. The Politicanti wanted to diminish the role of the miraculous in order to make room for revelations coming from the scientific study of creation and, especially, to avoid widening the gulf between potential Catholic sympathizers among some of the Protestant sects. The Popes did not want to see social unrest over economic disparities enter into the daily/worldly life of Italians in the Papal States, who could well be viewed as lagging behind other Italians and other Europeans in material well-being, education and so on. Lovers of history will enjoy this aspect of the story for itself. It was at this point that Pope Pius IX worked through the First Vatican Council to establish the doctrine of Papal Infallibility. We learn more about politics within the Church after this event. No party wanted to see the Church discredited in any way (unless they were certain members of the other party). The idea of a major spiritual and sexual scandal within a chapter of an order of nuns in the very shadow of Rome was not welcome. This book explores just such a scandal and the Church's legal and moral response and goes on to detail the process used by the Inquisitors to investigate the allegations. The record of this case has only resurfaced in modern times and this exposition of the process used back in the day will prove fascinating for interested readers.Hubert Wolf provides a step by step review and analysis of the case. His view is unstinting but sympathetic. The details are colourful enough: a Princess of the Hohenzollern family who wanted to be a nun made the denunciation, believing that she was being poisoned. A beautiful and personable young nun from a lesser background was accused of pretending sainthood as a ploy in sexual predation among novitiates at the convent. Echoes of this problem have been in the news for the past few years in America but they involve 'paedophile priests.' Learning about the approach honest priests, bishops and so on used in this case serves to illuminate the difficulties churchmen face in our times when they are called upon to deal with this tension between vows and all-too human nature. The treatment here is firm and is grounded in fact, history and doctrine. The book makes for important reading.

Awhile back, I was looking for something different to read and I came across the Nuns of Sant'Ambrogio: The True Story of a Convent in Scandal." The title makes it sound like and description of the book make it sound like the sordid tale of a sex scandal in a convent, but it goes beyond that. It goes beyond the scandal to explore how it could happen and delves into the mechanics of the Vatican, Church politics, and theological conflicts. If you're interested in the history of the Catholic Church or of religion in general, you'll want to consider this book."The opening of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith's archives by John Paul II in 1998 made the Holy Roman Inquisition's files accessible to researchers for the first time. The files from the Sant'Ambrogio trial, which had been hidden for a century and a half in the most secret of all Church archives, finally saw the light of day. At last, the secret could be revealed - and what had sounded like an outrageous fantasy turned out to be a true story of a convent in scandal."I won't give away the story, but mixing sex, deceit, religion, and politics, The Nuns of Sant'Ambrogio is a history that reads like a thriller novel. It's easy to see why author Hubert Wolf selected this scandal as a topic to write on. For the first almost 2/3 of the book, it reads like a salacious novel as Wolf describes what happened inside Sant'Ambrogio and the beginnings of the Vatican investigation and trial. There are more than enough twists and turns there to keep the reader interested. Then comes one of the biggest turns of the story; the reader learns that it's not just about the scandal within the convent but also about the struggle between schools of theology within the Catholic Church. It's about Church politics and a battle for influence within the Vatican and with the Pope himself. It would be very easy for the last 1/3 of this book to become dry and uninteresting and I'm sure that some readers (those who read it just for the juicy scandal) to find it so, but Wolf has done a great job at making the trial and politics keep the reader's attention. Sure, there are parts of it that explain why and how the Vatican works, bits on European History in the early to mid 1800s, and there are explanations of schools of thought within the Church but these are necessary to help the reader understand what's going on and place things within context. If you hang on to the end (and you should), you'll understand more about how some of Catholic theology got where it is today and about how the Vatican got to where it is today (and to be honest, understand why Pope Francis has such a huge job ahead of him now...)The Nuns of Sant'Ambrogio was a fascinating read. As someone who doesn't know much about the Catholic Church, I came away with some more understanding on the Church and the Vatican. As someone who grew up within the Southern Baptist Church and came to detest church politics, this book reinforced my opinions on church politics and my wariness of the motives of church leadership (regardless of faith or denomination). Don't let the tawdry details of the scandal make you think this is just a book and about sex and lies. It isn't. This is a well researched and well documented that is ultimately about Vatican politics and the fight for theological supremacy within the Catholic Church. After some thought, I'm willing to give it a 5 star review; it was not only an interesting read but an informative one as well, on a subject that many are not familiar with. If you are interested in the history of the Catholic Church, I think this is a must read.

This is not only the story of a convent in scandal. If you are interested in the roots of the current climate and problems in the Catholic Church, or if you are interested in church history of this period (late 19th century -- circa Vatican I), this book is a good mine. The author dug through the Secret Archives not long after they were opened to researchers, found this incident, and then beautifully sets it into the context of the times. If you ever wonder about how papal infallibility was ever formulated and pushed through Vatican I, this is a crucial book to read. Follow the main characters through time. Google is your friend.

This is an excellent and in-depth book about not only a single incident, but an entire time and world foreign to most of us today. I was puzzled at first as by the end of chapter two the author had told the full story about this particular convent in Rome and what went on there. I thought, what is he going to spend the rest of the book writing about? The answer is that the author goes into depth on many of the aspects of the base story, and these details are fascinating. For example, how did this convent originate? Why was its founder tried by the Roman Inquisition? What was mysticism in the 1800s and how did that affect the outcome? These and many other fascinating topics are covered in this learned and rewarding book.

Not focused. Way too many names of characters, which shows the erudition of the author, but bored me. Could have been more succinctly focused. Not worth slogging though until the last 2 fairly interesting chapters. Can't recommend it. Wanted to stop with each chapter but hung in. Waste of time. Sorry.

I am so glad he wrote Guts and Genius, because sometimes I fear the greatness of the Walsh-Parcells-Gibbs generation hasn't been fully appreciated. Glauber captures the essence of the genius of Walsh, the domineering Parcells, and the wily Gibbs. The vividly told stories of how these three men had a grip on an era of football are valuable not just for football fans but for anyone who seeks greatness in any walk of life. This book is a must for any sporting bookshelf."―Peter King, Monday Morning Quarterback and NBC Sports p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 22.0px; font: 18.7px Helvetica; color: #212121; -webkit-text-stroke: #212121; background-color: #ffffff} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} "Bob Glauber, as he usually does, has written a book that takes football fans of all ages inside the lives of three of the most significant figures in the game's history. Wow, excellent book! Fun to read, I could not put it down. I read several football books this fall and this was clearly the best one. As a New York Giants fan, I was reminiscing with a friend earlier this year about the three dominant coaches of the 1980's: Bill Walsh, Joe Gibbs, and Bill Parcells. Then, I found this book - so cool. They were the three best coaches not only of the decade, but in the history of the NFL. The 1980's were my middle/high school years (1989 high school graduate) and remember all the games mentioned in this book as if they occurred yesterday. It was such an exciting and competitive era in professional football. To this day, the 1986 Giants are my favorite team and that will never change. If the Giants could not make the Superbowl, I always pulled for the 49er's and Redskins because I was an NFC guy, still am today. I thank Bob Glauber for writing this book. It was a fascinating and interesting read and there are not a lot of books written about the 1980's NFL, which is a shame because this was a great decade of football. Highly recommend this book, guaranteed to not disappoint. 😀

Guts and Genius tells the saga of the three heads coaches that truly did dominate the NFL in the 1980’s. The author walks through the football lives of Bill Parcels (New York Giants), Bill Walsh (San Francisco 49’ers), and Joe Gibbs (Washington Redskins). Between these coaches, through the 1980’s into the early 90’s, they won 8 Super Bowls and left an indelible print on the NFL.There are a few key common themes that tie these coaches together besides their winning ways.First, they were football savants. While each had their philosophies and systems, especially Walsh with the West Coast Offense, they were also flexible enough to adjust their approach to meet the strengths and weaknesses of their own teams and that of their opponents. Of the three Walsh probably has the most long-term impact on the game with this short passing game designed to stretch the field horizontally and allow playmakers to get the ball in space and move the ball the down the field. He also left a much more extensive and successful coaching three than Gibbs or Parcells. The second theme is leadership. While each coach had extremely different personalities, they each found ways to connect with and motivate their players to play as a team and achieve more as a unit than they could as a collection of individuals. They each formed lifelong connections with many of the key players and coaches during their eras.A third theme is that each started off slow trying to rebuild moribund franchises and had many insecurities and self-doubt. Even when they were successful, the stress and insecurities almost doubled because the standard was always winning the Super Bowl. Anything else was almost considered a failure. Finally, and most disturbing, is the extreme stress and unfathomable hard work it took to accomplish the perfection each chased. Reading about the extreme stress each felt to win it all, with Gibbs basically living at the football facility to such an extent he missed his sons growing up, and the health, mental, and physical toll football took on these men is profound. While there is probably nothing profoundly new in this book, it was extremely well written, told in a concise, efficient, and lively prose, and frankly it is hard to put down. For some reason, at least for this reader, it even provoked emotion and remembrances of the great teams these men led. And while it goes from one coach to the next from chapter to chapter, that approach worked very well here, and facilitated understanding how these coaches interacted with each other, their teams, and how their journey’s unfolded.I found this to be a very interesting and worthwhile read.

Pretty good read and sad that so much heartache goes with coaching at highest level.....missing time with family, constantly angry and stressed, heart problems, sleeping in the office, high insecurity. All to entertain the public and win games.Found the book hard to follow at times because it jumped from seasons to seasons and I kept looking up games to follow along. I would have done all three in a linear, consecutive presentation with pictures inside the chapters, not at the end.

The stories of three great coaches come together in a very compelling book. The author does a great job exploring each of their backgrounds, then weaving their careers together culminating in many classic match-ups between them, and resulting in most of the super bowl titles in the 80's. A real throwback to a great football decade.

Great read! Love how Bob Glauber weaved 3 stories back and forth. Like every successful person, these 3 great coaches had to overcome some many challenges. Cool hearing about Parcell nickname Tuna came about. Walsh insecurities he over came and his mastery manipulation ( in a good way). Gibbs treating all players differently to maximize each players takent. Each 3 coaches successful coaching tree is absolutely unprecedented!

loved learn about the great coaches of my childhood..... this was more about what they did than how they did it, I'd rather have learned more of the how...

easy book to read, great stories and loved reliving that time and hearing some inside stories on some of the greatest NFL coaches ever.

I started watching football as a Bay Area Niners fan in ‘84. I remember and love reminiscing about the games.

This book gives a nice overview on rails backend development.

This is a good match for how I prefer to learn. It is unlike most technical books I've used. If you're looking for a technical reference, this might not be the way to go. But if you want hands-on learning that doesn't talk down to the user, this is a great choice. Here are some aspects I've really appreciated:* Each chapter makes sure you accomplish something, whether it's the installation and setup of your environment, or an actual working piece of software.* Time is taken to explain what's actually going on. Rather than "here, type this, it works", the author takes the approach of "here, type this, and here's what's going on under the hood." That means a lot to me, because I don't like code that I can't understand.* The book's approach encourages tinkering. This is a natural consequence of explaining to the user how and why things work: once you understand, you feel more free to play around with your software.I've not finished the book yet, but really like it so far. I warmed up immediately to the way the author approaches learning.

This manual is great for those wanting to expand their knowledge of Agile Web Development. I am fairly new, but understand the basics (HTML) so I got this book to help broaden my knowledge.I felt each chapter progressed nicely, building from one to the other and making sure you had hands on practice to accomplish. It also did well going to the why's behind the what's. Instead of just fixing the problem, it really help to have an explanation of the back end work.

This book is great for those who already know web development coming from some other framework but it's not for those who are completely new. If you don't know your HTML from your CSS or your HTTP from your SSH, then you will have some trouble understanding what's happening.People have always recommended Michael Hartl's book for beginners, but I don't recommend that book because it goes into some heavy Ruby development especially in the later sections where you need to write some authentication features. It would have been more helpful just to use the Devise gem and focus on some other parts of Rails. For those who are familiar with Rails or web development in general, this book is a great resource. It walks you through creating a shopping web app, specifically, a Pragmatic Book shopping site. It covers soup to nuts including using the latest 5.1 technologies such as Webpacker and Action Cable. Using React components to dynamically update your front-end. The book touches on all of these topics and the rational for its usage. It doesn't go into those topics in depth but gives you a brief overview of how to use it.Overall, the book is pretty comprehensive and covers a lot of ground, much more so than Hartl's book. There are lots of insights and gotchas that help developers to understand some of the more advanced features. It also covers Rails best practices such as creating and using helper methods to keep your front end clean.Because this book is comprehensive, certain sections, like the sections on deploying to production feels a bit rushed. It's definitely not as detailed in explaining the steps involved. However, it strikes a good balance in keeping to book to a reasonable length and enough insights for you to understand how the different pieces all fit together.

The one drawback about this book is that novice web devs coming in might have some difficulty. However, even a basic dev who understands the framing should be able to get this and create a website. The overall approach is to walk the reader through creating an app for shopping - each chapter moves the reader closer to app completion. It covers what was then (and still mostly is) the most recent approaches, and explains why those are the way to go. It's not a super in-depth, but gives enough information and background. Lots of good insights here.

I'm currently going through the book and I'm impressed. Currently I'm a .NET developer looking to transition to Rails. Earlier in my career (8 years ago) I found such a transition daunting so I always failed to stick with it. Guess I just needed time because this book just feels right at this point in my career. No turning back.
