About the Author

Born in a small town in Ohio, MARY OLIVER published her first book of poetry in 1963 at the age of twenty-eight. Over the course of her long career, she has received numerous awards. Her fourth book, American Primitive, won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1984. She has led workshops and held residencies at various colleges and universities, including Bennington College, where she held the Catherine Osgood Foster Chair for Distinguished Teaching. Oliver currently lives in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

I have loved great poetry most of my life. I prefer the old masters of poetry and usually stay away from the contemporary or so-called "modern day" poets. However, I was pleasantly surprised at this collection by Mary Oliver. I bought this book for my wife and decided to also read it. I do like her style and the fact that most of her poems are clear, easy to read and understand. She writes about her everyday experiences in simple and effective prose that makes it a real pleasure to read. One of the reasons I seldom read some of the contemporary poetry journals is because in many cases, the poetry rambles on forever with meaningless and incoherent verbiage. I sometimes wonder if the people who write this kind of poetry are residents of an insane asylum. I am always amazed that many of these present day "free verse" poets are praised by the pseudo-intellectuals who publish these journals.This is why it is so refreshing to read a collection of poems by a true poet like Mary Oliver.In conclusion, this is a sometimes interesting (but not great) collection of poems, but if you like Mary Oliver's poetry you should check out this volume. I have never purchased a book of poetry before. I am in love with these poems. It is heartbreaking to know that this volume is so short, and that it will most likely be over in a sitting or two; however, as I read these poems, it feels like an introduction to a friendship that I will visit again and again and again as time passes. These poems are contemporary, profound, and personal. This book will teach you about life; this book will teach you about who you are; this book will teach you how to be a better you. Buy it now. Oliver - Simple and profound. Good book for daily meditation. I find Mary Oliver's poems immediately accessible and yet they also provide food for thought.

This was my introduction into the writings of Mary Oliver. I heard many of the messages in my own voice as if I had lived the life of the poet. If you are touched by nature, you will be touched by these verses.
