I have been GMing for years before a 22 years lull and I am now back in the fray for my kids' sake.I have seen a number of these "how to" guides, starting with the Dungeon Master Guides from D&D and AD&D back in the 80's and I have to say this one is one of the best out there.I bought it on a whim and I do not regret a cent of it.It starts with the classic how-to sections (preparation, rewards, etc.) and quickly gets into very interesting and rarely seen sections about for instance the types of players you will encounter as a GM (and you DO encounter them) and how to address the group dynamic between the players. This section is absolutely excellent and a must read.Another great section is a collection of predefined NPCs at the end of the book - this saved me a number of times when the PCs take a surprising turn and start down an uncharted path. There are collections of tables to randomly determine the background of NPCs (or PCs), the types of societies and their characteristics, what the party finds on the side of the road, etc. etc. etc.All in all this is a very interesting, well thought-through read.

I've been playing AD&D since 1980. While I love the original, 1979 DMG, it is seriously lacking in advice for new DM's. I learned better than 90% of what this Pathfinder books contains, the hard way, by trial, and plenty of errors. It is nice to read that what I learned over the past 30+ years is true. It is also nice to see that someone has assembled practical advice for persons just starting up as a new GM/DM. There are many pitfalls, and this book will help its readers avoid many of them. For veteran DM's, it has little to offer, but there are still some things worth reading, and possibly being reminded of. The authors take the viewpoint that the rules are guidelines, and as long as you, and your group, are having fun, then keep going. I like, and second, that approach. This book has a very great deal to offer to GM's of any role playing game, or genre. It is worth your time, and money, to buy a copy, and read it. If it only serves to remind you of things you should be doing in your games, then it will have proved itself worthy. It is also a valuable resource to share with beginning GM's who are looking for advice on how to become a good GM, one who will have no trouble retaining excited players, who keep coming back, session after session. Cheers!

This has some good stuff in it if your just starting out, the copie I got was a bit damaged like all the other comments I read, but I got the mini one on sale for a good price so I'm ok with it. The first few chapters where kinda uninteresting and stuff I think if your all ready familiar with the concept of role playing and knew a little bit about story telling you don't really need, same goes for some other chapters but there are some helpful hints and charts inside that I personally liked.

I bought this thinking it would be the equivalent to AD&D's original Dungeon Master's Guide, but I was mistaken. If you're an experienced DM/GM and you already own the Pathfinder Core Rulebook, you don't NEED this book. It's a Gamemastery book, meaning it's main purpose is to help GM's manage their games better. That being said, there are a number of goodies added to appeal to experienced players (e.g., pre-generated NPCs, expanded treasure tables). It wasn't really the book I was hoping it would be, but it's a decent book just the same.

GM guides are sort of hit or miss in my experience, and a lot of the time it comes down to how inexperienced they assume you are. For instance, the 4th Edition D&D DMG was more or less useless because a very good portion of the book was explaining simple things like what GMing is and what RPGs are and other things that may have been useful to a first time GM, but a waste of space for anyone who'd ever done it before. The 5th edition DMG is actually excellent, but that's not what this is about. For me, what makes this book worth getting above everything else is the NPC stat blocks at the end. It is such a time saver to have around 50 pages of archetypal NPCs, from pirates to nobles to bandits to cultists, just to save having to come up with such types of people on the fly. I've had it for about a week and have been very thankful a couple times to have it, as I've been writing adventures for my group. There are some tables for dungeon dressing, landscape, NPC characteristics and flaws, etc. that I think are good, but I wish there were more. For instance, I'm terrible at coming up with descriptors of overland travel, so I liked having a table of "interesting landmarks" as you're traveling. I just wish that there were more, and thematically organized. Like, instead of just random terrain, to have separate tables for "desert" and "prairie" and "underground," etc. just like how they have the monsters split up in the back of the Bestiaries. It's the same with loot. They've got a lot of tables for magical items, potions, and more "high level" dungeon loot, but not just conventional junk. It's fun, to me, to have other things besides "500 gold coins" to add flavor and depth to unexplored places, and it's also hard for me to keep those sorts of things interesting and inspiring. One of the best things about playing prepublished D&D adventures is the loot is always stuff like "a small bronze figure of an eagle, with ruby eyes" or "a silver plate, etched with strange runes." I love that stuff, and I'm terrible at coming up with it. I'd like tables with just stuff like that on them to keep things more interesting, and memorable. To its credit, the 5E DMG DID have tables for "art objects" in it, so I just photocopied those pages and stuffed them into this book.I think where this book really shines though is its advice on creating memorable NPCs. I've had a relatively shy world in my campaign so far just because it's hard for me to come up with varied NPCs with different personalities and motivations, that the players have an interest in, but who don't steal the show. And the NPC generation chapter in this book is excellent. I think that I will benefit from it, and have a more interesting world because of it. Highly recommended.

This paperback version is great! it's cheap and it's not as heavy. While it it won't fit in your pocket a stack of these will be a bit kinder on your back. I do plan to baby these a bit more than my hardback books. The pages are the same as the hardback just a bit smaller. This is a definitely a must if you're starting out in Pathfinder and can't drop the cash on all the books.

Exactly what my 8th grade daughter was looking for. She sat down and read it for hours and hours after it arrived. Very happy with it.

The book I recieved was pretty heavily damaged. Not happy. At least the pages are intact.

A definite improvement over the first book. Still Marion is a weak lead. But improving so maybe by the end I'll actually like her. From the things I gathered Marion was a holy terror of spoiled teen before she lost her memories and while that doesn't surprise me thanks to the hints from the previous book, it makes me wonder how her sister Elise had let things get so bad. After all Elise is God and since Marion is her Voice they should have had some sort of relationship, right? And Elise is not one to indulge or spoil. How did this happen? I mean her own mother didn't want to talk to Marion, who's been missing for weeks and her foster sister hates her guts! If I was in Marion's shoes all these things would make me seriously consider not going after my lost memories, since apparently they made me a total bitch. But Marion is both selfish and more than a bit stupid she does precisely that. Despite her obligations and the lives depending on her, she follows her memories to an obvious trap that almost costs her her life. Yet there were some flashes of a more decent Marion, one who has the potential to be likeable and to come to life if Marion chooses to follow another path.Seth and Charity were the real stars of this book and I like them more and more. One of my theories that I thought of reading the previous book proved to be correct and now I'm trying to fit it in with the info from the last book of the Ascension series. The continuity isn't really good but maybe all will be explained in a latter book. One of the things that bother me most is that the Elise Marion remembers in some flashes and the one I do are two very different women. The last thing I want to talk about in this review are Konig and Nori. I always knew that Konig is bad news but I wasn't aware how bad it is. The guy has classic abuser tendencies and needs to be killed as soon as possible. Preferably by making some colossal mistake thanks to his overinflated ego. In fact he almost dies because of his stupidity but Seth helped him *sigh*. Nori was one hell of a disappointment. She seemed to be one of the good guys but apparently a set of chiseled abs and ass are enough to make her lose her mind, debase herself and become a greedy, manipulative little bitch. Damn, I wanted her to be on our side. The plot thickens in this book and managed to get me hooked despite me still not giving a damn for Marion. At least there's a promise that Elise will actually show up and I need to see Konig get his ass handed to him one way or another :) And hey what do you know, the next book might continue the trend of improvement. Maybe by the end of the series one of the books will earn a 5 star rating!

3.75 Marion you Might be Redeemable Yet StarsHow do you make some of your characters more interesting and the plot better in your second book??? Easy you tell everyone to go to hell. I loved the switch up to the focus of this story and was happy to tag along to hell with Seth and Marion. This is a really good example of why I don’t usually count a series down and out if I just so happen to dislike the first book in it. I really hated Marion in Cast in Angelfire and it really colored how I felt about that entire book. For the most part she was a selfish, partially clueless, brat and I couldn’t get past a lot of that. There are definitely reasons for it all and they make a little more sense when you read this second book.I gave this second book of this series a go simply because I liked Seth, he was the only shining star for me in the first book. The focus of Cast in Demonfire is a little about finding Marion’s memories but the majority of it is about Seth figuring out what is happening to him and why. He doesn’t want to tell Marion exactly what is going on because he isn’t sure that he can trust her and I totally didn’t blame him there.***Sure, Marion liked Seth right now. She might even forgive him for the monster he was becoming. But then the Canope would restore her memories, and she wouldn’t be his Marion anymore. Charity hadn’t spoken to people like Dana McIntyre, who characterized Marion as relentlessly selfish***Every sentence I read in this book made me certain that the last thing I wanted was for Marion to get her memories back. It seems that everyone who knew her from before seems to hate her for something. But Seth I really wanted to get to what is going on with him and get some more insight into his history. But then the book made me really scared to get those answers because what if I don’t like them.***“You know what happened to me in Genesis. You have answers.”“You wouldn’t be satisfied to know them. You’ll live in despair when you know the truth, lost in darkness deeper than any other within the Nether Worlds.” Her bony fingers slid down his shoulders, her left horn brushing his hair as she bent closer to whisper in his ear. “You don’t need to know the truth. You don’t need the Canope. Leave and be satisfied knowing ignorance is best.”***Not only do we spend some time in hell there is also the time spent at the winter court that is still in a state of upheaval. I’m not a fan of Konig at all and I really think he is just one step away from being a woman beater. But this book really made me despise him on multiple levels and left me thinking that he is going to be a mess of trouble for Marion in so many ways.Charity is actually the character that I thought got fleshed out the best. She is growing to accept who and what she is and it seems like she might not want to hide what that is anymore. It will be interesting to see where she finds her place to be in the world.Marion has come a little ways as well. She isn’t exceptionally likeable yet but she grew a bit in this book and definitely isn’t quite as bad anymore. She maybe just had too much power when she was too young and it colored everything for her. This should be a good learning curve for her and maybe she will be a better person this time around with or without all of those lost memories.I left this book feeling really excited for the next so here is to hoping that it keeps getting stronger.

It is an interesting turn of events really and things are heating up with the love triangle of Marion, Seth and the Sidhe prince who let me tell you is very needy of late. His about face when he sees an opportunity makes me want to warn Marion that he is self serving but I think she already knows that and beware anyone who gets caught in the cross fire. So many twists and turns and the "big reveal" at the end was interesting concerning who put this game in motion - all to find Marion's memories. I liked Charity as a character and wished she had more options in the end (No spoilers here) but maybe in the next book things will change.Seth's character has changed and he is still rescuing people sometimes from themselves and this will be a great series watching how he deals with his own revelations and will revenge be on the menu any time soon. There is never a dull minute in this action packed series and it is definitely worth buying this book, you won't be disappointed.I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review but I also pre-purchased it before I was given a copy.

If I was giving out awards for beautiful book covers, you can bet that Never-Contented Things would be getting one. The cover is absolutely striking, and immediately gave me an impression of the sort of story that it would have. Never-Contented Things was written by Sarah Porter, and it’s an interesting shift on the whole fae/changeling/human dynamic. That’s not to say that the typical hierarchy isn’t there, because it absolutely is. More that the perspective is different. Everything is from the human side, and it really makes you realize just how hard it could be to identify fae actions. Warnings: Two of the main characters in this novel are foster children. One of them had a pretty horrible life before she ended up where she did. Her backstory starts out as hinting, but will eventually outright state the fact that she was raped. There are no details, but it does come up from time to time. And it results in a few uncomfortable scenes. Also, like any true fae story, there are some kidnappings that occur throughout. That’s probably more expected though. Never-Contented Things was such a different experience to read. It had fae, and I believe changelings as well, and of course there were plenty of humans. Together it was and always is a recipe for disaster. Yet Sarah Porter managed to make her telling unique, despite the rules she based it on.The whole story is set in this perspective you don’t really get when it comes to fae stories, and I love that. I spent half the novel trying to convince myself that I wasn’t imagining things, and the other half worrying about how they would get out of their situation. I loved the different perspective on this tale. If I could get more stories like this, I would be thrilled. There are big bad fae as well, and not the type that appears to be bad, but are truly nice on the inside. I mean they are truly horrible creatures, through and through. It’s refreshing that Porter stuck to her guns there. I’ll admit that at times the novel did drag on more than was needed. The subtlety was appreciated at first – it was refreshing not just seeing the fae jump out and go ‘boo!’ to the main characters. But after a while I found myself wondering if they would ever actually see them - which might make for an interesting book, but it’d have to be done carefully. There was a lot of raw human nature in this book, both the good and the bad. I actually loved the juxtaposition between all the human emotions and reactions and the fae just doing their thing. It added a complexity to the world that I hadn’t expected. It took me a while to become attached to the main perspectives in this novel, but it did happen. Once I was invested in what was happening to them, I couldn’t stop myself from worrying and theorizing about what was going to happen next. The ending came as a bit of a relief to me. I was happy to see how everything played out – especially since not everyone got what they wanted. Likewise, not everyone got what they deserved…but that’s to be expected. Life is hardly ever that clean, especially when the fae have become involved.

This book is about extremely flawed people who make bad choices for good reasons, and covers some pretty dark topics. It's desperate and poetic and sad and hopeful. There are horrible cruel fairies and truly high stakes. There are teens who just love each other so much and don’t know how to show it right. There's the terror of being being known and understood by another person, and worse, being known and understood by yourself. And there's something so nice about reading a book in which the main characters care so hard. Everything in it, from the emotional arcs to the plot, are driven by how much they love and want to protect each other.Of these three main characters, none of them are straight, which I love. You have people who already know and are comfortable with their identities, and others in various states of figuring themselves out. Ksenia has a less defined identity in that there's some discussion of how she's not really a girl or a boy.Read for emotional, flawed, LGBT teens trying really hard to save themselves but mostly each other. Dark content but fiercely hopeful. Beautiful writing and a weird, tingly-creepy fairy world. Appears to be a hit or miss kind of book, but I loved it.If you like Holly Black's The Coldest Girl in Coldtown or The Darkest Part of the Forest, you should read this! If you read Sarah Porter's other book Vassa in the Night and liked the weirdness but could have used more sense-making weirdness, DEFINITELY read this.

This book made me feel awkward, disturbed, and a little depressed. There was not one happy moment. Not one.I wanted to read this book because I thought it was about the Fae. The summary hinted at having some story components to Fairie royalty. As an avid Fae/Fairie reader, I was expecting a story about either the Fairie Courts (Summer, Winter, etc) or the Seelie/Unseelie my courts. Instead, there is just a strange creature named Prince. That's it.The words "enchanted and changling" are used, but other than that, there really isn't anything that makes you think that fae are involved. The individuals stealing kids could be any random group of psychos. On top of that the writing style features these sophisticated ideas being told in childish terminology and lingo. Do kids still really start sentences with "Like"? It just didn't come across well. That dialougue was LIKE totally off the mark. There are some sensitive topics covered and honestly it gave me the creeps. I'm LIKE so open minded and this LIKE totally made me feel the jeepers 😂... seriously though, I'm truly an open minded person and can enjoy a mixture of literature and art. So the fact that this story felt very creepy and weird to me means that it will probably get a worse reaction from the general public.I can see the connections the author wants us to have with these characters, but I just don't feel it. For someone who doesn't read or listen to as many books as I do then this book might be hard to follow.I forced myself to finish this because it was my first ever Advanced Copy from NetGalley. If not for that, I would have gone without knowing the fates of these characters and I can't even remember the last time I didn't finish a book I started.Let me finish by saying that if you are interested in this book because you like fairie books, then you may not get what you want here. This book will fit for those who are interested in a more sinister type story. The main characters are in a toxic relationship where one is having second thoughts but scared to leave. I'm all for some real bad guys who aren't secretly nice guys trying to be bad. The bad guys aren't the problem. For me they are the only believable part of the book and they are fairies. It's the humans who say and do the unrealistic things. You may love this book, if so, we are on opposite sides of the prism. That's ok because if we all liked the same things then we wouldnt have any variety. The synopsis/summary for this one needs to be tweaked so that it's target market is hit correctly. Otherwise the book will get a lot of negative ratings because of how and who it it currently marketed towards.
